Dead Famous: 18th Century Obituaries Sparked Modern Cult Of Celebrity
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  11-10-2008
The Gentleman’s Magazine in 1789 gave an account of the life of Isaac Tarrat, a man known to hire himself out to impersonate a doctor and tell fortunes in a fur cap, a large white beard and a worn damask night gown. Another subject, Peter Marsh of Dublin, was made famous by his convictions about his own death in 1740. After being hit by a mad horse which died soon after, Mr Marsh convinced himself that he would also go mad and die. The Gentleman’s Magazine reported that he duly died “of a conceit that he was mad”. Fascinating !!!

The First American Patent - Turning Ash Into Gold
Rustee
by Rustee  5-22-2008
We don't get the potassium salts we need from wood anymore. But for a long time, Hopkins had put us at the center of a great chemical process industry. So our first patent was one of the great American patents after all.

300-Year-Old Solar Eclipse
Jorjor
by Jorjor  1-28-2008
Courtesy of those great folks at APoD, the oldest known (European) depiction of a total solar eclipse. Earlier depictions may exist in Asian sources - Arab and Chinese astronomers, for instance, made accurate notes on the supernova of 1054, which formed what is now the Crab Nebula, aka M1 & NGC 1952. The Chinese also kept accurate records of sunspots and comets long before other parts of the world did.

MySpace anonymity contributes to teen suicide.
emmieinwonderland
by emmieinwonderland  12-10-2007
I cannot say that it CAUSED the suicide. One night of attacks will not lead to that. This must have been a problem that had been building up, but these attacks were the last straw. I can't believe that Megan's parents can completely blame this other family. The fact that the daughters were previously friends (and the Drew mother and daughter conspired together) is enough to prove there was a previously building-tension.

Ancient Blueprints of Calculus Uncovered in Archimedes Text
Kore7
by Kore7  10-6-2007    10
Details have been released from the nine-year-long reconstruction project to recover the Greek mathematician's writings from this one-of-a-kind find and the results are fascinating. Buried beneath the surface of this gilded palimpsest, researchers discovered more extensive demonstrations of concepts such as infinite series, approximations, limits, and integral calculus than had been known to exist in ancient times. Archimedes wrote The Method almost two thousand years before Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz developed calculus in the 1700s. Reviel Netz, an historian of mathematics at Stanford University who transcribed the text, says that the examination of Archimedes' work has revealed "a new twist on the entire trajectory of Western mathematics."

Sir Isaac Newton Predicts world will end after 2060
Honoradele
by Honoradele  6-20-2007    1
(article cont.) It may end later, but I see no reason for its ending sooner," Newton wrote. However, he added, "This I mention not to assert when the time of the end shall be, but to put a stop to the rash conjectures of fanciful men who are frequently predicting the time of the end, and by doing so bring the sacred prophesies into discredit as often as their predictions fail." In another document, Newton interpreted biblical prophecies to mean that the Jews would return to the Holy Land before the world ends. The end of days will see "the ruin of the wicked nations, the end of weeping and of all troubles, the return of the Jews captivity and their setting up a flourishing and everlasting Kingdom," he posited.
