Dead Famous: 18th Century Obituaries Sparked Modern Cult Of Celebrity
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  11-10-2008
The Gentleman’s Magazine in 1789 gave an account of the life of Isaac Tarrat, a man known to hire himself out to impersonate a doctor and tell fortunes in a fur cap, a large white beard and a worn damask night gown. Another subject, Peter Marsh of Dublin, was made famous by his convictions about his own death in 1740. After being hit by a mad horse which died soon after, Mr Marsh convinced himself that he would also go mad and die. The Gentleman’s Magazine reported that he duly died “of a conceit that he was mad”. Fascinating !!!

From a pharmacy recipe written in 1715, It contains any number of chemicals thaccan rebuild cell damage, and it tastes nice to. Not that I've had personal experience with this Particular Brew . Two words crossed my mind as I was reading. Of course Mead, the Wine made from Honey, then there is The 'Royal Jelly' that can be fed to a worker be so they can become a queen if the queen is ever Lost. That is bound to have more Kick,

Why Greenland isn't so green
pokkets
by pokkets  8-29-2008
Greenhouse gas levels before the Industrial Revolution were 280 parts per million (ppm), and now stand at around 385 ppm - just shy of the 400 ppm that prevailed in Greenland's pre-ice era. The more they study climate models the more uncertainty they have, because the weather keeps showing them it involves a lot more than they imagined. But almost any weatherman could tell you that. They usually have trouble predicting tomorrows weather. They also know, that in 20 years they'll be forgotten, and people will be asking the incumbent weathermen. Who will still be predicting a 60% chance of showers. In case you were interested In 982 Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for murder., he named the land Grænland ("Greenland").] Greenland was also called Gruntland ("Ground-land") and Engronelant (or Engroneland) on early maps. They also say (in Wikki) that while only small parts of the island are green, they are, they are Very green. Perhaps it's the contrast.

August 21st, This Day In History
merrie
by merrie  8-21-2008
In 1893, a group of American expatriates and sugar planters supported by a division of U.S. Marines deposed Queen Liliuokalani, the last reigning monarch of Hawaii. One year later, the Republic of Hawaii was established as a U.S. protectorate with Hawaiian-born Sanford B. Dole as president. Many in Congress opposed the formal annexation of Hawaii, and it was not until 1898, following the use of the naval base at Pearl Harbor during the Spanish-American War, that Hawaii's strategic importance became evident and formal annexation was approved. Two years later, Hawaii was organized into a formal U.S. territory. During World War II, Hawaii became firmly ensconced in the American national identity following the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. In March 1959, the U.S. government approved statehood for Hawaii, and in June the Hawaiian people voted by a wide majority to accept admittance into the United States.
