USA Disdain for EU Must End with Bush's departure.
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  10-31-2008
As Naomi Klein and others have noted, this order contravened international law. The 1907 Hague convention requires an occupying power to respect the laws of the country it has invaded. Before Silverberg, Washington's chief representative in Europe was Clayland Boyden Gray. As the grandson of Bowman Gray, who owned Reynolds Tobacco, he inherited a vast fortune gained from the industry. It is only fitting, then, that he has spent much of his professional life trying to water down environmental and public health rules including the landmark clean air act.

White House Orchestrated Taxpayer-Funded Trips to Help Republican Candidates
LoPhatt
by LoPhatt  10-16-2008
A new report released today by the House Oversight Committee reveals that the White House orchestrated a huge, taxpayer-funded campaign to ensure Republican candidates were elected into office during the mid-term elections in November, 2006. In an apparent violation of the 1907 Hatch Act - which strictly prohibits the use of public offices to influence the outcome of elections - the efforts were coordinated by the White House Office of Political Affairs, which used political muscle in an attempt to retain Republican control of Congress. The will of the voter gets snuffed in Corporate America in more ways than imaginable.

Category 4 Financial Storm
Joshua Zumbrun
by Joshua Zumbrun  9-18-2008
From JP Morgan's congressional testimony a few years after a major bank panic in 1907. An exchange between Morgan and his inquisitor for the government, attorney Samuel Untermyer. Untermyer: "Is not commercial credit based primarily upon money or property?" Morgan: "No sir. The first thing is character." Untermyer: "Before money or property?" Morgan: "Before money or property or anything else. Money cannot buy it...because a man I do not trust could not get money from me on all the bonds in Christendom."

July 28: Today In History
merrie
by merrie  7-28-2008
The Fourteenth Amendment became part of the United States Constitution Soon after ratification, the Slaughterhouse Case tested the scope of the Fourteenth Amendment. Brought before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1873, the suit argued that the monopoly the Louisiana legislature granted to a New Orleans slaughtering company abridged other businessmen's privileges as American citizens and deprived them of property without due process of the law. The court ruled against the slaughterhouses, narrowly interpreting "the privileges and immunities" of citizens and stating that the amendment did not extend to the property rights of businessmen. In their dissenting opinion, Justices Field, Bradley, and Swayne wrote that, in considering the Fourteenth Amendment, the right to pursue any lawful trade or avocation, without other restraint than such as equally affects all persons, is one of the privileges of citizens of the United States which can not be abridged by state legislation.

Girlfriend
jklugman
by jklugman  6-16-2008
This word is older than I thought (I thought both uses originated in the 1950s, but the "female friend" use goes back to 1859 and the "female romantic partner" use goes back to 1892. OED lists a 1896 use of "boy-friend" (male friend usage, which you never hear today) and a 1909 use of "boy-friend" in the romantic sense.

Irony In Wall Street
merrie
by merrie  4-1-2008
(continued)-- including real bailouts -- should be extended to homeowners and others. Back in 1907, nobody could demand that the original J.P. Morgan bail out more people with his own money. But whatever the government does sets a precedent and causes more special interests to demand that they get the same treatment. There is another irony in this situation. There was no Federal Reserve System in 1907. That is why Wall Street bankers like J.P. Morgan had to do their own heavy lifting with their own money. Somehow that did not sit right with the Progressives of that era who, like today's liberals, seemed to think that things should not be left to the market when the government can step in and make everything right. Such thinking led in 1914 to the creation of the Federal Reserve System. Their task was to prevent financial panics, bank failures and a catastrophic contraction of demand. It sounded wonderful -- and such sounds count for a lot in politics.
