Google can accurately estimate flu activity faster than CDC?
Lexica
by Lexica  11-13-2008
"We've found that certain search terms are good indicators of flu activity. Google Flu Trends uses aggregated Google search data to estimate flu activity in your state up to two weeks faster than traditional flu surveillance systems. " Fascinating! I knew that data from Where's George? has been useful to epidemiologists. And now Google, too.

Armistice Day November 11, 1918
merrie
by merrie  11-12-2008    1
The armistice was formally signed in Foch's railway carriage on 11 November (in 1940 Hitler exacted revenge by forcing the French to sign an armistice - on German terms - in the same railway carriage). The armistice initially ran for 30 days but was regularly renewed until the formal peace treaty was signed at Versailles the following year. Should the Germans have deviated in any way from the terms of the armistice the Allies warned that a resumption of hostilities would begin within 48 hours. The terms of the armistice required the Germans to evacuate German-occupied territories on the Western Front within two weeks. Allied forces were to occupy the left bank of the Rhine within a month, and a neutral zone established on the right bank. Soldier's Days
merrie
by merrie  11-11-2008
Finally, heartfelt thanks from citizen Jeff G. at Protein Wisdom, where reader Tim McNabb replies with the simple sincerity of a soldier: Your welcome Jeff. And to all you douchebags on the left who, in your mendacious fits of juvenile petulance lash and spit at the nation in which you are free to be a lashing, spitting, mendacious petulant, juvenile douchebag, you too are welcome.

Nov 11 1918: INGLORIUS Date in US Army records (hidden)
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  11-9-2008    3
In the few short hours before 11am of 11/11/1918, United States army casualties were in EXCESS of 3,000 . This was hugely in excess of ALL loses of ALL the other armies!!! Did US men have a death-wish? No, but US generals were quite willing to expend their men's lives on whims! In one instance there were 300 casualties to capture a bath house. So that officers could bath in luxury, 300 died. They was a subsequent inquiry. Its findings were judged so damaging to the US army image that it was never published. Data courtesy of BBC

Survivors of 1918 Flu Pandemic Still Immune
nedhamson1

Interesting, survivors of the 1918 flu could provide a source of vaccine to protect us from a similar flu getting ready to break out of Asia in the next year or so.

Spanish Flu Never Happened
joejoepmc
by joejoepmc  9-17-2008
Well - it did happen... it just was not really the flu at all. See - the CDC records statistics for ever disease and sickness. Problem is that Pneumonia and Influenza cases are reported as one figure, when they are 2 separate things altogether. Influenza symptoms are just early onset bacterial infection, not ever proven to be a "Virus" at all. In fact the word "Virus" is not even correct for the original discovery is now called an "exosome".

Education Not Oil As Empire
debbyski
by debbyski  8-31-2008    1
For all the hard work of our good teachers, our system is failing to keep pace with the demands of a new century. Entrepreneurial charter schools such as KIPP, Uncommon Schools, Aspire, the Inner-City Education Foundation, the Alliance for College-Ready Public Schools and Green Dot demonstrate what a single-minded focus on excellence can achieve with low-income students" Try investing in we the people. It's an investment that will pay off.

There's a good reason the CDC is telling this rather dated story in new up-close-and-personal accounts in non-medicalese terms and explanations. It wants you to Get Prepared.
