POPSThe Genius of Photography vs. Susan Sontag's On Photography
|quote]Sontag argues that the proliferation of photographic practice has long begun to establish within people a "chronic voyeuristic relation" to the world around them. And that therefore the meaning of all events is somewhat leveled to an unhealthy degree. As she argues, this fosters an attitude of anti-intervention. Within this it's felt that the photographer should leave their subject, whether it be a person or an event, to its own devices while being photographed, regardless of the moral character of the subject. The justification comes in the idea that the resulting photographs will be documents, representations of events already in motion, in the name of truth and enlightenment. Sontag goes even further to say that the individual who seeks to photographically record cannot intervene, and that the person who intervenes cannot then faithfully record, for the two aims contradict each other. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Photography Just something I'm pondering.

POPSThe "New-Deal" Mistake It Failed Before and It Will Fail Again Five years into the New Deal, in the winter of 1937-1938, two in 10 were again unemployed. President-elect Obama has said that "the one thing I can say with certainty is that we are going to need a stimulus package passed either before or after my inauguration." The idea, presumably, is that handing consumers a check - pre-Christmas bonus, perhaps - will encourage them to spend. Businesses will in turn benefit and then spend themselves. THE historical model that the Democrats are choosing to hold up as they ponder our financial crisis isn't Harry Truman's Fair Deal or Lyndon Johnson's Great Society. It is Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. At least three economic reforms under discussion now were also central in the New Deal package. Trouble is, these reforms didn't necessarily work well when they were first tried - and some failed outright.

POPSA Host Of Unemployed Citizens Face The Grim Problem Of Existence
This is also the speech that coined the phrase "the only thing we have to fear. . .is fear itself." We have faced these problems before. We must prepare for the worst, but hope for the best, and work toward that end. I doubt very much Obama will be frank with us but will continue the illusion that he is serving the people. We must remain vigilant and work to recover our country. Our Constitution can be our guide. Our forefathers game plan worked. Read their words of wisdom. When a nation changes its way of thinking, it will change its actions and lead us away from where we are. Be the change you want to see. What to do? Take your pick from this list. We the People of the United States, in Order to FORM a more perfect Union, ESTABLISH Justice, INSURE domestic Tranquility, PROVIDE for the common defense, PROMOTE the general Welfare, and SECURE the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ORDAIN and ESTABLISH this Constitution for the United States of

POPSHard Choices And Challenges Follow Triumph Emanuel cautioned against attempting to do everything at once. Finding the balance between a big and ambitious agenda and a legislative strategy to reach those goals over time, will be Obama's responsibility. "We're all wary of the lessons of 2006, when expectations were raised so high prematurely," he said. Part of that strategy, he added, will be persuading people to be patient about the pace of change. Patience is a virtue . :) ... now get to work!!

POPSAdvice From Warren.Buffet-NYTimes OpEd Over the long term, the stock market news will be good. In the 20th century, the United States endured two world wars and other traumatic and expensive military conflicts; the Depression; a dozen or so recessions and financial panics; oil shocks; a flu epidemic; and the resignation of a disgraced president. Yet the Dow rose from 66 to 11,497. Today people who hold cash equivalents feel comfortable. They shouldn’t. They have opted for a terrible long-term asset, one that pays virtually nothing and is certain to depreciate in value.

POPSRevolution Been Going On, but AGAINST Us! I have been looking forward to the rise of a strong minority to revolt against the insane American government. But now I see through this article the Revolution began some time ago against me, you, and the people. I believe it to be so; we are in the midst of a revolution; hence all these injuries and usurpations against us. I already feel the hunger pains. I must resist for conscience sake.

POPSA strong condemnation based on voting record "We face a perfect financial storm,” Kucinich warned. “The elements are the deficit spending for the war of 3 to 4 trillion dollars, the trillion and more tax cuts, the war itself and the lack of serious investment in the country. We are being hollowed out. We are going to see more unemployment and more people losing their homes. With $700 billion we could have made a real investment in the country, in jobs, in infrastructure and in homes. Instead, we got robbed.”

POPSBailing... I honestly do not know if this is a good plan. My inclination is to "reap what you sew" -- and we've had more than 15 years of republican (endorsed by dems) deregulation polices that have bred this crisis...

POPSFoundation Acquires Letters Sent From Prisoners of Nazi..Camps We all know that innumerable 'holocausts' occurred over the centuries. Even now, they are occurring; but these personal words from those who experienced such racial hatred will be memorials and perhaps fortify those who want to take the initiative to prevent such things from happening again. All the while...knowing that all we do is a drop in the bucket because *hate* and dictatorship are *normal* for this world. But these are a great reminder and I look forward to reading them in more detail.

POPSThe Jante Law You think I don't know anything about you? You think I don't have something on you ? .. is a more accurate interpretation. :) It has to be said that the general understanding of the law was an essential and fully integrated part of the Danish and Norwegian societies long before it was ever written down. The rules are not only applied outwards; Danes apply the rules equally towards themselves. This means that the rules of the Jante Law become a sort of social stabilizer where one does not wish to be either too high above or too far below others socially and economically. Janters who transgress this unwritten "law" are regarded with suspicion and some hostility, as it goes against communal desire, which is to preserve social stability and uniformity.
