POPSEdgar Allan Poe finally getting proper funeral
If you are a fan of E.A.Poe, as I am, this entire article is a must read. ~~~ "When they dug up Poe's body in 1875 to move it, it was mostly skeletal remains," Jerome said. "I've seen remains of people who've been in the ground since that time period, and there's hardly anything left." Instead, Jerome commissioned local special-effects artist Eric Supensky to create an eerily lifelike — or deathlike — mock-up of Poe's corpse. "I got chills," Jerome said Monday upon seeing the body for the first time. "This is going to freak people out." The body will lie in state for 12 hours Wednesday at the Poe House, a tiny rowhome in a gritty section of west Baltimore. Visitors are invited to pay their respects. Following the viewing will be an all-night vigil at Poe's grave . Anyone who attends will have the opportunity to deliver a tribute. On Sunday morning, a horse-drawn carriage will transport the replica of Poe's body from his former home to the graveyard for the funeral.

POPSSurprising Survey I would have thought that Britons were significantly more enlightened than Americans concerning evolution. I'm somewhat skeptical now but still have an open mind considering where this survey originated.

POPSparallels between Obama and Lincoln a great line - Matthew Brady, posing Lincoln for a photograph in New York just before his famed Cooper Union speech in 1860, suggested fixing his collar. Lincoln replied, to the amusement of both men, “I see you want to shorten my neck.”

POPSGeniuses of Science Next year, we will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, and the 150th of the publication of his 'On The Origin of Species', which revolutionised our understanding of biology. Approximately 1,000 years before the British naturalist published his theory of evolution, a scientist working in Baghdad was thinking along similar lines. Although the Muslim world is often now seen as ill-equipped for scientific discovery, we can look back to Baghdad and see the origins of the modern scientific method, the world's first physicist and the world's first chemist; advances in surgery and anatomy, the birth of geology and anthropology; not to mention remarkable feats of engineering. POPSCharleston, SC Market Raided Charleston, SC is well known for its sprawling, open air vending markets in the historic district. A trip to Charleston would not be complete without a stroll down S. Market Street, one block down from Charleston Harbor. There, one can find unique gifts not found anywhere else...like handmade, traditional sweetgrasss baskets. Native Charlestonian families handcraft these magnificent baskets as their sole source of income. It's a disappearing Art passed down through the generations. It's just a real shame to all the hardworking vendors here that these individuals have scammed unsuspecting consumers and tourists. It makes those of us who really do believe and practice true Southern Hospitality in Charleston... look bad.
