POPSDo You Find This Ad Offensive? There's a big story on the intersection of social media and health today. Unlike some of its competitors, Johnson & Johnson has been experimenting with advertising directly to consumers with Facebook applications and YouTube videos. But a video ad promoting Motrin for moms who carry their babies in slings sparked an uproar from connected consumers. I'm curious to know what you think --- is this video really offensive? It's clipped above.

POPSBotulism "Fun Facts" in time for the holidays "Those bacteria also prefer alkaline environments, so the most common canned-food culprits are low-acid foods such as asparagus, lima beans, green beans, corn, meats, fish, and poultry. How toxic is it? A little over a pound of botulin is enough to kill every human on Earth."

POPSBaby P: the evidence grows Labour will close Parliament early and stay on holiday longer. We are in an economic crisis of Gordon Brown's making. A child murdered and it appears easier to have save his life than let it expire, but all we will get is another useless inquiry. If 80 head teachers think that Sharon Shoesmith is doing a good job, then perhaps they too should reflect on their competence?

POPSFor the first time in history, the majority of the people on our planet live in cities "The sheer scale and speed of the current urban expansion make it unlike any of the big changes that have punctuated urban history. It mostly consists of poor people migrating in unprecedented numbers, and then producing babies on a similarly unprecedented scale. It is thus largely a phenomenon of poor and middle-income countries; the rich world has put most of its urbanization behind it."

POPSKenyans' High Hopes for Obama This article from The Standard, a major newspaper in Kenya, shows that some Kenyans feel like Obama has made "promises" to help them and that he will make African (Kenyan) development and aid a high priority. Kenyans are going to have to wait in line, though, behind the American people.

POPSBREAST is BEST... for health Fairly recent article! The words Glycoslation... Oligosaccharides! Glycans... Cell Communication. Oh they just stir a wonderment in my soul. What a profoundly important article for all human beings. Not only in the role of saccharides as pertains to newborns, but all human beings. I guess those crazy people at Mannatech have been right all these years? Maybe I should go out and buy some Ambrotose since they have the patent on the combination of all 8 necessary saccharides. I feel better already just knowing this.

POPSA BREAST of Fresh Air Seeing this article reminded me that profession often dictates perspective i.e - a surgeon will want to operate, a baker will want to bake... and in this case a doctor specializing in asthma... will look for a way to suggest suckling milk increases lung efficiency? While this is a good news article - I think too often the truth is slighted and spun in favor of one's own professional bias. But alas, we live in a world of bias. PS - who is paying for all these studies to tell us breast milk is good for babies... isn't that fact just as old as human beings? Search google for "oligosaccharides in breast milk" if you want the bigger scoop. To sum it up breastmilk is the only natural source of all necessary glyconutrients which are derived from oligosaccharides contained in breaskmilk. These are responsible for cellular communication, bacterial intestinal health, brain development, lung health, allergy health, immune system. More to come... I am on a BREAST QUEST!

POPSThe saddest of Madonna portraits :( It's hard to fathom of the grief of those whose babies are stillborn or die soon after birth. My heart goes out to them. I'm glad to see that these specialty photographers are handling their work with such sensitivity and are not charging the bereaved parents.

POPSVoter Intimidation In Philadelphia: Law Enforcement Intervenes Evil Republicans want to intimidate poor people by requiring some kind of polling place ID verification, under the cynical guise of attempting to curb the coordinated voter fraud we now know to be occurring across the country. If only they knew that a much more effective method of intimidation is to have armed supremacists simply block the entrance to the polling place. ”We will not allow some racists and other angry whites, who are upset over an impending Barack Obama presidential victory, to intimidate blacks at the polls,” said. “Most certainly, we cannot allow these racist forces to slaughter our babies or commit other acts of violence against the black population, nor our black president.”

POPSSIDS Awareness Helps Infant Death Drop "Women should talk with their doctor about ways to get ready for a healthy pregnancy," he said. "They should see their health care provider as soon as they think they are pregnant; have check ups often; and avoid tobacco smoke. Those are the best ways to care for both the health of the mother and the health of the baby." Read More "ONLY in the LowCountry" at lowcountrytoday.com
