POPSIs nuclear energy good or bad? Things began to heat up for the industry within two weeks of President Bush taking office in January 2001. He formed the National Energy Policy Development Group (NEPD), headed by Vice President Dick Cheney, which produced a National Energy Policy report by May of that year, recommending “the President support the expansion of nuclear energy in the United States as a major component of our national energy policy.” Following a long legal battle to force the release of NEPD documents to the public, environmental lawyers at Natural Resource Defense Council uncovered that industry lobbyists were integral in forming the president’s energy policy and his decision to launch a so-called ‘nuclear revival’. Over eight years the nuclear industry has received billions in government funds

POPSBurma Cyclone, "Perfect Storm", like Katrina Note the US, which has an embassy in Burma, and the UN, both now criticizing their government (which is targeted for "regime change" by the Bush administration), were monitoring the event well in advance. Also, notably, the storm had remarkable oddities, per experts quoted here, taking an unusual easterly course, sending it over the most populated area, contrary to the typical pattern of nature-- just like Katrina. This article and others call it "the Perfect Storm". Perfect for what? Perfect in that it targeted for maximum damage in its unusual aspects. The observations in this article are remarkable. See Clipmark for more comments on Burma Cyclone--Weather Warfare for Regime Change?

POPSBearly Truthful When the polar bear population increases by 500% it hardly qualifies as being endangered. In fact, ask the people who have their arms torn off by these cuddly little fellows whether they are as nice as they are pictured by the eco-nazis.

POPSI don`t know from the Republican side Good to know he believed in what he was doing and thought that it was important to communicate the president's message and everything. As with most of the things Snow said throughout his 1.5 years as the WH spokesman, it's hard to know if this is an attempt at humor, a humongous lie, or more proof that Snow is just an incredible jerk. Like when he said that veteran reporter Helen Thomas was representing "the Hezbollah view", or claiming that the civil war and occupation happening on the streets of Baghdad was somehow comparable to Washington DC's high murder rate, or that Iraqi politicians deserved a long summer vacation (unlike US soldiers) because Iraq gets hot in the summer, or that 2,500 dead US soldiers wasn't significant because "It's a number, and every time there's one of these 500 benchmarks people want something", etc, etc. There are too many to choose from, so check out a few lists here and here. Good riddance, Tony Snow.

POPSDanger in Uniform Not good... But no law at present forbids civilian surplus stores in the U.S. from stocking and selling the items, a loophole that one Marine corporal finds alarming. “It’s no secret that some people in the United States support the terrorists, and if they were to get these things it would cause some problems over in Iraq,”

POPSCancer So true... My dad just lost his best friend to pancreatic cancer. When his friend was diagnosed, he immediately flew out to Austin Texas to meet him. They spent his last 8 months telling stories about their high-school years and remembering the good times. The ENTIRE CHURCH and more was filled with people mourning for Ed. That's about 500 people

POPSInvestigate Republican Corruption -- Get Fired.
I was busted last week for smuggling in 500 tons of illegal sagebrush over the Mexican border (it's illegal to bring weeds into the country). It's true I also had kidnapped the sweet 16-year old daughter of the Mayor of Nogales, Sonora. and was carrying my AK-47 and had a few boxes of Stinger missiles in the back of the Ford pickup But these were all 'dirty ops,' for the good guys, like Iran-Contra and our current mulitude of scams in the Middle East. So I was sure glad when the border agents who stopped me were later arrested, and the state attorney general gave me immunity to testify against them. (as we all happened). Now, though, I'm moving my business over to San Diego so I'm glad the Big Jefe, Comandante Bushie is taking care of things over in California before we move our base of operations. Normally you have to live in a third-world banana republic dictatorship to get service like this; but we're all part of a global economy now and War & Oil is the Main Line to the Holy L

POPSVista in the Enterprise I disagree in several ways with this article, mainly because I don't believe that Vista is inevitable. Yes, I'll run it at home - along with Linux and OSX! But the enterprise environment has more options than trudging along with the same old Wintel retreads.

POPSThe Kids Are Alright. Aren't They? On the one hand I'm glad there's a conference like this for gay youth to talk about their experiences with bullying and harassment in school. On the other I'm frustrated that there's still a need for a conference like this. Maybe that's because of what I went through growing up as a skinny, effeminate, nonathletic, black gay boy in the south, in the 80s, during the Reagan era. (Yeah.I might still have a few scars from that.) But what's truly disturbing are the people who says that an anti-bullying conference "affirms" the "gay lifestyle," and particularly the woman who said "There's something called therapy. A person can change if they want to, and they should be encouraged to change if they can." And if they can't or won't? Do they deserved to be harassed? Well, I remember NARTH suggested that it might do them some good.

POPSObama Walks Ethical Tightrope The article is pretty much just the facts and Obama's statement. It's not clear if anyone is accusing him of ethical misconduct or if there's any evidence that something improper was done. To me, it's just one of those things that you here and wonder why the person was oblivious to the possible perception of their behavior. Sounded like a good statement and apology from Obama. Hope he thinks things through a little better in the future.

POPSMiddle East: So far so good for Iraq's Maliki By all accounts the war-weary US public welcomed the Casey initiative, meaning that more than half of the US troops in Iraq would soon be returning home. The US administration would be able to sell this retrenchment on the grounds that Iraq was ready to stand on its own, that Maliki's cabinet is in place, the insurgents are laying down their arms, and Zarqawi is dead. This after all, is what President George W Bush has been promising all along. As things stand, Maliki will have to make several strategic and highly important decisions in the weeks to come, if Casey's plan for partial and gradual withdrawal materializes. He will have to walk a tightrope between different political groups that seem to be united around him, at least for now. To do that, he needs to continue giving them what Churchill called for: Facts and Results. Sami Moubayed is a Syrian political analyst.
