Piracy Spurs Threats to Shipping Costs
merrie
by merrie Today 12:15 AM 1
The company, however, will save on the $200,000 fee the Egyptian government charges to use the Suez canal. "We're hoping if other companies join us, we can put enough pressure on the Egyptian and other governments to solve this problem," says Chief Operating Officer Jan Hammer. Rob Lomas, secretary general of London-based Intercargo, a lobby group, says national shipping associations plan to step up a campaign for more protection off the East African coast. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet said they would keep four warships in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia on Africa's horn, where most attacks have occurred. If attacks continue, insurers will continue raising rates for ships making the trek through the Gulf of Aden and the Suez canal until governments prove they can clamp down on the pirates, says Simon Beale, an underwriter with Amlin PLC, a London-based underwriter.

Changing Back
merrie
by merrie 11-17-2008 1
Obama wants to "restore funding for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program." He will spend $200 million a year on state and local matching grants. He will also "launch a National Infrastructure Reinvestment Bank that will invest $60 billion over 10 years" plus "stop spending $10 billion a month in Iraq and start investing that money in Phoenix, Nashville, Seattle" and "re-commit federal dollars to strengthen mass transit . . . ports, roads, and high-speed rails." CDBG actually gave "aid" to millionaire enclaves such as Greenwich, Conn. And as urban policy scholar Kimberly Hendrickson pointed out in an American Enterprise Institute study: "Mainstream urban scholars and practitioners — on both the left and right — have become dismissive of, and even hostile towards, programs once heralded as bold and visionary . . . now widely seen as harmful to cities and their residents."

We built the United Nations, We started the idea of human rights, We expanded voting rights and civil rights for everybody, We spread the idea of individual rights throughout the world, We even rebuilt our enemies after World War II. It is no exaggeration to say that America is one of the most progressive countries in the history of the world.

This is actually my own design. What do you think? It's intended to be both whimsical and practical, it could be vital field equipment for a lot of soldiers - but you know how it is; it won't be issued.

It might be particularly useful for getting orders on the record - just, you know, in case.

For most, I hope, it will be a really simple way of making a video diary for the folks back home.

This Thanksgiving thank Sarah Hale
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie 11-13-2008 4
To Sarah Hale Thanksgiving would be a therapeutic holiday. "There is a deep moral influence in these periodical seasons of rejoicing, in which whole communities participate. They bring out . . . the best sympathies in our natures." Hale saw this spiritual dimension of Thanksgiving as a means for preventing the insanity of civil war in America.

American Policy Elites Do Not Care About the Starving
brightlight4
by brightlight4 11-12-2008
World food prices grew 22% from June 2007 to June 2008 and a significant portion of the increase was propelled by the $175 billion invested in commodity futures that speculate on price instead of seeking to feed the hungry. The result is wild food price spirals, both up and down, with food insecurity remaining widespread. For a family on the bottom rung of poverty a small price increase is the difference between life and death, yet neither US presidential candidate has declared a war on starvation. Instead both candidates talk about national security and the continuation of the war on terror as if this were the primary election issue. Given that ten times as many innocent people died on 9/11/01 than those in the World Trade centers, where is the Manhattan project for global hunger? Where is the commitment to national security though unilateral starvation relief? Where is the outrage in the corporate media with pictures of dying children and an analysis of who benefits from hunger?

Armistice Day November 11, 1918
merrie
by merrie 11-12-2008 1
The armistice was formally signed in Foch's railway carriage on 11 November (in 1940 Hitler exacted revenge by forcing the French to sign an armistice - on German terms - in the same railway carriage). The armistice initially ran for 30 days but was regularly renewed until the formal peace treaty was signed at Versailles the following year. Should the Germans have deviated in any way from the terms of the armistice the Allies warned that a resumption of hostilities would begin within 48 hours. The terms of the armistice required the Germans to evacuate German-occupied territories on the Western Front within two weeks. Allied forces were to occupy the left bank of the Rhine within a month, and a neutral zone established on the right bank. On Veterans Day, Don't Forget About the War
katsteevns
by katsteevns 11-11-2008 4
(cont.)Most Americans want to put the war behind them, but this feeling is based not on a coherent critique but on a kind of collective exhaustion. In many ways, we as a country find ourselves in a mood like the one towards the end of the Vietnam War: we are tired and simply want to move on and forget the conflict ever happened. Yet this feeling can come at a great cost, because it is this same dynamic that led to the betrayal of more than three million Vietnam veterans.

Nov 11: History of the Poppy
egsnyder
by egsnyder 11-11-2008
A writer first made connection between the poppy and battlefield deaths during the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th century, remarking that fields that were barren before battle exploded with the blood-red flowers after the fighting ended. Prior to the First World War few poppies grew in Flanders. During the tremendous bombardments of that war the chalk soils became rich in lime from rubble, allowing ‘popaver rhoeas’ to thrive. When the war ended the lime was quickly adsorbed, and the poppy began to disappear again. Lieut.-Col. John McCrae, the Canadian doctor who wrote the poem “IN FLANDERS FIELD,” made the same connection 100 years later, during the First World War, and the scarlet poppy quickly became the symbol for soldiers who died in battle. Three years later an American, Moina Michael, was working in a New York City YMCA canteen when she started wearing a poppy in memory of the millions who died in the battlefield. During a 1920 visit to the United States a French woman, Madame

Hopes for the Future
sahara
by sahara 11-10-2008
I hope that new government programs and spiderwebs of red tape do not pop up to interfere with American productivity, and that we can quickly get our financial footing again. We have to understand that an economic correction needs to take place and the only way out of the coming recession is to go through it. Efforts to avoid it can only prolong it. I hope we can somehow find our way back to sound money and reject corporate cronyism. We cannot address our budget problems at home without changing our disastrous foreign policy abroad. I am hopeful that the new administration can take on the mantle of peace and diplomacy in foreign policy that many Americans feel they were promised. Many other nations also have this hope, which exudes from their congratulatory sentiments offered after the election. They hope that national sovereignty will be respected. They hope that through diplomacy violence and war can be averted. I hope so too.

Hope for Change?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken 11-10-2008
Bush may speak of al Qaeda, perhaps of "Islamofascism," and others he'll accuse of brutality, while contrasting their ideology with a vision he claims to have of peace, liberty, prosperity. But the U.S. government differs not from those extremist groups who use violence to further their causes, for ours is a government which also uses unjustified violence or the intimidating threat thereof to advance its own agenda. The US... has become like the rogue states it takes pride in condemning. Our military is not used to defend our freedom any longer, it is used to enforce an evil interventionist foreign policy. I do believe this empire will eventually end. The choice is between ending it voluntarily by choosing peace and bringing our troops home from all over the world, or its demise out of necessity from economic and human suffering in America. To save lives, rather than a "liberation" of Iraq, the world needs liberation from American imperialism.
