POPSThe Perils of Cheap Oil CONT'D: "When economic growth resumes across the globe, demand for oil will surge once again. Only this time around, given the constraints presented by declining oil fields and the current apparent freeze in investment in new oil production capacity, the supply-demand equation will likely send oil prices shooting back up, perhaps even further than before. "Which is why now is the time, more than ever, for government leadership that promotes conservation, energy efficiency, fuel economy, and increased production of renewable energy. Waiting until the economy recovers before tackling energy would be a huge, huge mistake."

POPSObama will push for 8 team playoff 'I’m going to throw my weight around. I think it’s the right thing to do'. Wow. I hope if he can get around to it, he will do something about those pesky dry cleaners ruining our cloths. Reality TV is a nuisance too. I also want a new puppy.

POPSMake Someone's Day Over There This is actually my own design. What do you think? It's intended to be both whimsical and practical, it could be vital field equipment for a lot of soldiers - but you know how it is; it won't be issued.

It might be particularly useful for getting orders on the record - just, you know, in case.

For most, I hope, it will be a really simple way of making a video diary for the folks back home.

POPSNov 11 1918: INGLORIUS Date in US Army records (hidden) In the few short hours before 11am of 11/11/1918, United States army casualties were in EXCESS of 3,000 . This was hugely in excess of ALL loses of ALL the other armies!!! Did US men have a death-wish? No, but US generals were quite willing to expend their men's lives on whims! In one instance there were 300 casualties to capture a bath house. So that officers could bath in luxury, 300 died. They was a subsequent inquiry. Its findings were judged so damaging to the US army image that it was never published. Data courtesy of BBC

POPSFollowing The Trail Of Toxic E-Waste
This is smuggling. This is illegal," says Jim Puckett, founder of the Basel Action Network, a group working to stop the dumping of toxic materials in poor countries that certifies ethical e-waste recyclers in the United States. "A lot of people are turning a blind eye here. And if somebody makes enough noise, they're afraid this is all going to dry up." E-waste workers in Guiyu, China, where Pelley's team videotaped, put up with the dangerous conditions for the $8 a day the job pays. They use caustic chemicals and burn the plastic parts to get at the valuable components, often releasing toxins that they not only inhale, but release into the air, the ground and the water. Potable water must now be trucked into Guiyu and scientists have discovered that the city has the highest levels of cancer-causing dioxins in the world. Pregnancies in Guiyu are six times more likely to result in miscarriages, and seven out of 10 children there have too much lead in their blood. Allen Hershkowitz

POPSObamarama Liveblog 7:19 PM. I do think it's worth considering whether there's inherently anything about a 30-second spot that makes it the norm in political advertising. Obviously, you're not going to be able to buy a 30-hour block every day. But folks like Al Franken, for instance, have taken really good advantage of 60-second slots this year, and I'd think that the presidential candidates could too. 7:21 PM. This really is basically the Democratic convention compressed into 30 minutes. I think people forget that Denver was really quite a strong convention, even if it got overshadowed in the media narrative a bit by St. Paul. 7:29 PM. That was very good, although I actually think they could have done without the live bit at the end. 7:31 PM. Let's play ball!

POPSDelta Force officer: US officials stopped plans to kill bin Laden This is the 2nd guy I have heard claim this. The other was a CIA operative who spoke at an event and also has a book. The stories are pretty similar. I guess Bush and crew figured without a bad guy to chase, the war would be short, so let Bin Laden out there so we can expand the war. One reason why I could never take orders - if I had the bad guy in sight - I would take em out!

POPSOSHO: Absolutely Free to Be Funny I Love to Disturb People. In a series of excerpts from an interview with Jeff McMullen of Australia’s “60 Minutes” Osho offers a series of one-liners about Gandhi, Hitler, the Pope and Mother Teresa – and goes on from there to talk about his reputation for being controversial, contradictory, and, in the words of the interviewer, “one of the funniest people I’ve ever met.”
