How an Amazonian tribe turned a missionary into an atheist

Sweden's Ultra-Modern Underground Data Center
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  11-16-2008
When asked the motivation behind Pionen, Jon Karlung, CEO of Bahnhof said “Rather than just concentrating on technical hardware we decided to put humans in focus. Of course, the security, power, cooling, network, etc, are all top notch, but the people designing data centers often (always!) forget about the humans that are supposed to work with the stuff.” “Since we got hold of this unique nuclear bunker in central Stockholm deep below the rock, we just couldn't’t build it like a traditional – more boring – hosting center,” he said. “We wanted to make something different. The place itself needed something far out in design and science fiction was the natural source of inspiration in this case – plus of course some solid experience from having been a hosting provider for more than a decade.” Regarding the design of the facility, he said “I’m personally a big fan of old science fiction movies. Especially ones from the 70s like Logan’s Run, Silent Running, Star Wars...

Stop Blaming Capitalism For Government Failures
merrie
by merrie  11-15-2008    3
stagnation had Americans looking for an alternative. That’s what Reagan offered, denouncing big government and promising a new “morning in America.” Under Reagan, some taxes were reduced, inflation was subdued, a few regulations were relaxed--and the economy roared back to life. But while markets were able to function to a greater degree than in the immediate past, the regulatory and welfare state remained largely untouched, with government spending continuing to increase, as well as some taxes. Later administrations were even worse. Bush Jr., often laughably called a champion of free markets, presided over massive new governmental controls like Sarbanes-Oxley and massive new welfare programs like the prescription drug benefit. None of this is consistent with capitalism. As the economic system that fully recognizes and protects individual rights, including the right to private property, capitalism means, in Ayn Rand’s words,

A Writer in a Living Novel
Nerfzilla
by Nerfzilla  11-4-2008
Ms. Chute, 61, a wry, direct and earthy woman who favors bandannas, peasant skirts and stout hiking boots, works in their home, which is guarded by a sign that reads: “Woa. Visitors Turn Back.” Neither building is heated, except by wood stove, or has hot water. The compound’s sole toilet is a tin-roofed outhouse. The Chute home does have an industrial-size copying machine, however, and nearby she keeps her AK-47 rifle, which she likes because it has a gas piston that dampens recoil. “It’s very gentle, very soft,” she said. Ms. Chute, whose fourth novel, “The School on Heart’s Content Road,” comes out on Friday, had a surprise hit in the mid-’80s with her first book, “The Beans of Egypt, Maine,” about a hard-luck, occasionally incestuous clan that some critics compared to Faulkner’s Snopeses. “If it runs, a Bean will shoot it,” she wrote. “If it falls, a Bean will eat it.” The book’s empathy and precise observation derived, it turned out, from personal experience. Ms. Chute, who g

McCain Lied about William Ayers
spirithiker
by spirithiker  10-13-2008    3
I posted a clip earlier about how Sarah Palin will grasp at any opportunity to lie about Obama. McCain is doing the same thing, despite proof to the contrary. I have never understood how anyone can be stupid enough to lie about something that can so easily be proven. America cannot afford to have people of this low character to represent us. Contiued embarrassment.

The Reality of Ayers
oscarrob
by oscarrob  10-10-2008
There is a quote from a movie and book whose title escapes me "The past is like a foreign country. People do things differently there." To people who grew up in the 60s and 70s although people who did what Ayers did were wrong and on the fringes, we understand the anger. Think of people's anger today at terrorism and remember that many were that angry at the US government. Think of parents who wouldn't let there children watch the news because of the death and destruction that came every day. Think of riots at political conventions and in the streets of cities across America. Think of the fear of nuclear attack from a volatile and powerful Russia. What Ayers did was wrong and should, by all rights have been punished. It was not, however, today.

*sigh* Naturally, I'm one of those guys described in that last paragraph.... _However_, I do not go along with the statements that this is as bad as 1929. I think we're looking at the mid-late 70s again -- and a bunch of lovely new government regulations intended to clean up the mess left from the last round of government regulations....

McCain Supporter Takes Aim At Old Liberal Media
merrie
by merrie  9-24-2008    5
Ayers, known for his work in the 1960s and ’70s with the violent radical left Weatherman Underground Organization, is now a university professor. Obama and Ayers were members of Woods Fund of Chicago and Ayers contributed $200 to Obama’s state legislative campaign. Wright, Obama’s former pastor, is openly critical of America and once said the United States brought on the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 with its own “terrorism.” “The coverage hasn’t been fair,” Cummings said.
