Detroit Automakers a Relic of the Past
merrie
by merrie  11-15-2008    5
No one in the private sector is willing to pony up a dime for this business plan. GM stock is below its 1946 price, and one investment house has priced it at zero. The Detroit Three are taking advantage of the passage of the $700 billion financial bailout to argue that they, too, need government money to go on. But as Megan McArdle of The Atlantic argues, the finance firms are different. If credit coagulates, everyone suffers, while if the Detroit Three go bankrupt, their shareholders lose their stake, employee and retiree pay and benefits are cut, and real estate values go down in areas where the companies and their suppliers operate -- but life for most of us goes on. McArdle further argues that the capital invested in keeping the hulk of the Detroit Three operating pretty much as they are, unprofitably, will not be available to those whose startups could morph into the Microsofts and FedExes of the future.

Experts Say Humans Can Live to 1,000
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-12-2008    6
Leon Kass, the former head of Bush's Council on Bioethics, insists that “the finitude of human life is a blessing for every human individual”. Bioethicist Daniel Callahan of the Garrison, New York-based Hastings Centre, agrees: “There is no known social good coming from the conquest of death.” Maybe they’re right, but then why do we as humans strive so hard to prolong our lives in the first place? Maybe growing old, getting sick and dying is just a natural, inevitable part of the circle of life, and we may as well accept it. "But it's not inevitable, that's the point," One wonders what Methuselah would say about all this.

balthazarus
by balthazarus  11-11-2008    6
"If anything, they are superior in many ways to us. Thinking too much about the future or worrying too much about the past is really unhealthy. The Pirahã taught me that very lesson. Living in the moment is a sophisticated way to live. I don't see depression. I don't see some of the things that afflict our society - and that's not because they don't face pressures." An interesting story.

Modesty/Religious War in Jerusalem Mayor Election!!!
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  11-10-2008
Jerusalem is one of Israel's poorest cities and one of its most divided: Arab and Jew, religious and secular, rich and poor. Its future is a core issue in any peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians. Dadon said: "I want a city of diversity for all religions, where each religion has its own area." "Are you in favour of fencing people in?" asked Mann. "The ultra-Orthodox are taking over," said Dadon. "They need to be in a different place. They run their lives completely differently."

Her example (and Hillary's) show, that politic is a rough merciless business and, IMHO, not for gracious female nature, especially on presidential levels. Has she political future? Has she enough inner power to reform ideology of her party as well as her own convictions? Can she find the ways to hearts, souls and minds ordinary people without inciting hate and cave instincts?

USA: History Gives Way to Its Future
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  11-5-2008    2
This is my favorite headline. Nice slideshow on this page and the article "History Gives Way to Its Future" has a nice video. Many people, including some rather staid old politicians, have said something different is going on here, not just an election but a 'movement,' a cause. Like an old protest song sang: "Something is happening here..." Some said this is a 'new vision,' some said Obama was to be a 'transformational' character. (Not just of the side-effect - the profound side-effect --of him being Afro-American but because of how we expect he will rule)

Looting your retirement fund to fix the economy
deb2012
by deb2012  10-17-2008
It would be a very different story for the very wealthy. The top 20 percent of earners own more than 70 percent of IRA and 401(k) assets, and, for many of them, the McCain plan represents a terrific opportunity. They could access funds (which they contributed pre-tax in the first place) by paying only one-third the tax they normally would. Without rules to prohibit it, many could withdraw $50,000-a-year from their regular 401(k)s at 10 percent tax and immediately reinvest the funds into a Roth IRA, where all future earnings are tax-free. Others could find equally creative ways to move money around to take advantage of the low tax rate without adding a dime to savings. No doubt the economy is bad, but ruining the old age of millions of middle-class retirees while creating yet another tax boondoggle for the wealthy is no way to make it better.

From Paralysis to function, how far are we? closer now
balthazarus
by balthazarus  10-16-2008
Wow, very impressive progress! "the study, which appears in the journal Nature, scientists at the University of Washington in Seattle implanted ultra thin electrodes into the brains of macaques which had been trained to play a game that involved rotating their wrists to the left and right. While the monkeys played, the electrodes picked up electrical signals in their brains that made them tense different muscles. The scientists then injected the monkeys with a chemical that temporarily paralysed their arms. This time, signals from nerves in their brains were fed into a computer, cleaned up and magnified, and sent down a wire to muscles in the monkeys' wrists. When the monkeys tried to play the game again, they were unable to at first, but soon learned to control their wrist movements using the brain implant. when he found something worked, he quickly repeated it and adopted the strategy" very nice!

Tortue: Direct Authorizations from White House Revealed
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-16-2008    2
Torture is against Internation law In March 2008 Bush vetoed Congressional legislation outlawing torture. New legislation was later passed officially approving waterboarding & other modes of torture (John McCain voted in favor of this approval) Approving torture and approving totally allowed spying on citizens without specific warrants or reasons are two fatall steps towards full-fledged fascism. This documentation of these White House memos would document Bush/Cheney & other White Houses officials of war crimes OR complicity in war crimes. If these officials can get away with this now, not only does the corruption and descent of our nation deepen now but makes it more probably that such evils will happen in the future. (Having private armies is another classic step down the road to fascism -- like Blackwater, like other "private security contractors.") Ruling by fear and lies, etc. The legacy of George Bush will be that he's the first president to be tried for

Decoding the sense of smell
balthazarus
by balthazarus  10-2-2008    1
In future work, the team plans to work with researchers worldwide, including MIT's Media Lab and Department of Biology, to develop a portable microfluidic device that can identify an array of different odors. Such a device could be used in medicine for the early diagnosis of certain diseases that produce distinctive odors, such as diabetes and lung, bladder and skin cancers, Zhang said. There are also a wide range of industrial applications for such a smell-based biosensing device, he said. One application i can think of is developing an antidote for smelly things, people etc.. :)
