There are more Slaves Today Than at Any Time in Human History
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-25-2009
During the four years that Benjamin Skinner researched modern-day slavery, he posed as a buyer at illegal brothels on several continents, interviewed convicted human traffickers in a Romanian prison and endured giardia, malaria, and dengue. But Skinner is most haunted by his experience in a brothel in Bucharest, Romania, where he was offered a young woman with Down syndrome in exchange for a used car. We in America are not affected by this, right? On average, every half-hour, one more person will have been trafficked to the US into slavery. About 14,000-17,000 are trafficked into the U.S. each year and forced to work within U.S. borders under threat of violence for no pay beyond subsistence. Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking and Free the Slaves both work to bring attention to this modern day horror. Barack Obama is still setting his foreign policy agenda. He needs to hear from all of us that the true abolition of slavery needs to be a part of his legacy.

Report on Strike of Textile Workers in Lawrence, Mass. In 1912:
katsteevns
by katsteevns  7-28-2009    1
The premium system, as actually worked out in the mills in which it is used, is somewhat complicated and is explained in detail for each occupation later in this chapter. The purpose of the system is to induce the largest possible output by each employee. The method of securing this varies. In some occupations a premium or a bonus in the shape of an amount of money in excess of the regular time or piece earnings is paid to each employee whose output exceeds some fixed standard. In some other occupations the premium or bonus is paid not directly on output, but for attendance-that is, it is paid any employee who has not missed more than one day during the four-week period.

Japan considers abolishing cash
cakebelly
by cakebelly  6-25-2009    1
more: Other extreme ideas mooted by the financial authorities include a tax on physical currency or introducing one to operate alongside the yen. All three ideas are based on a theory concerning interest rates and the concept that a nominal rate of zero — as Japan has now lived with for much of the past decade — may be too high. In Japan’s case, the theory would suggest that nominal rates of -4 percent might be closer to what is required to rescue the economy from another..

More on the Rise of the Euro-Right
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  6-20-2009    5
Reason has a good post up discussing the rise of the Euro-Right. Moynihan dismantles a number of misconceptions by Left-wing pundits desperate to present the British National Party as a phenomenon of the Right. Here are some good posts about the BNP by Daniel Hannan. For instance: "BBC presenters keep calling the BNP "far Right"? Nick Griffin's acceptance speech: He wasn't going to talk about immigration policy he said, since everyone knew where he stood on the subject. No, his priority was to expose the way in which public assets had been privatized. Look at the BNP's manifesto: it wants nationalisation, subsidy, higher taxes, protectionism and (sotto voce) the abolition of the monarchy. And look at where its votes came from. The BNP is a symptom of Labour's collapse." http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/daniel_hannan/blog/2009/04/24/new_statesman_bnp_is_to_the_left_of_labour http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/daniel_hannan/blog/2009/06/08/2009_european_elections_ten_conclusions

Marinetti futurists to Childish&Thompson stuckists
chara
by chara  2-20-2009
Futurism was an art movement that originated in Italy in the early 20th century. It was largely an Italian phenomenon, though there were parallel movements in Russia, England and elsewhere. The Italian writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti was its founder and most influential personality. The Stuckists have grown to an international movement and as of November 2008 numbered 183 (affiliated but independent) groups in 44 countries. In October 2000, Regan Tamanui founded the Melbourne Stuckists, the first one outside the UK. On 27.10.2000, he staged the Real Turner Prize Show at the Dead End Gallery in his home, concurrent with three shows with the same title in England (London, Falmouth and Dartington), and one in Germany, in protest against the Tate Gallery's Turner Prize. In 2000, Susan Constance founded the first US group The Pittsburgh Stuckists: "The new word in art is Stuckism. A Stuckist paints their life, mind and soul with no pretensions and no excuses."[

Jews Not Zionists
abailart
by abailart  1-9-2009
I don't clip this as a call for the abolition of Israel, which I personally think is just as febrile and pathological as the right wing hatred of the native peoples of Palestine. I clip it merely as an indicative example of one Jewish voice: there are many, all different, and we are fortunate to have clippers who have recently represented dissent within Israel by Jews. Indirectly, too, the many viewpoints of Jews are reflected by a fully human spectrum of opinions among Palestinians, and suggest looking at the equally rarely heard proposals for a one state solution to the divisions maintained by western imerialism and their proxy minority Israeli chums.

Steve Biko freedom CRY
chara
by chara  1-6-2009
Steve Biko's legacy lives on through the struggle he helped to ignite and through the freedoms that South Africans now possess. While in Medical School, Biko became involved in NUSAS (National Union Of South African Students), a non-racial students' union In 1968, Steve Biko became the cofounder and first president of the all-Black South African Students' Organization (SASO) The primary aim of the organization was to raise black consciousness in South Africa through lectures and community activities. Biko concluded that the apartheid system had a psychological effect on the Black population, which had caused Blacks to internalize and believe Whites' racist stereotypes. According to Biko, Blacks had been convinced that they were inferior to Whites, which resulted in the hopelessness that was prevalent in the Black community. Biko preached Black solidarity to "break the chains of oppression". In the final years of apartheid, the national students' unions remerged.
