Review Group: Sex education should respect faith values
Karzdan
by Karzdan  10-31-2008    3
Ugh, faith schools will be allowed to pervert sexual education classes to fit their faiths. In other words, expect more 'abstinence only' sex ed classes. And classes that teach homosexuals are not worthy of the rights other humans get. Wonderful!

Is Sarah Palin a Feminist?
birdie-brain
by birdie-brain  10-12-2008    2
Women, including teenagers, need the knowledge and the tools to make responsible and moral decisions about such events that will certainly have such an impact on their lives. Third, anyone who believes that abstinence education can avoid these adverse effects is living in la-la land. A significant percentage of our society will continue to have sex outside of marriage. Young women still report a stigma for using contraception, and so then sometimes have unprotected sex. Contraception itself is not foolproof. Epidemic proportions of women and girls continue to suffer from rape. If 11 year old Erin Maxwell, who was recently raped and murdered in our community, had survived her rape and become pregnant, Sarah Palin would favor forcing her to carry the child to term. Forcible childbirth and coerced parenthood is bad for children, for families, for communities, and for schools.

Is Sex Information the Federal Government's Business?
merrie
by merrie  9-8-2008    1
They were however forced to make sexual choices without information about how to reduce the risk of disease and pregnancy, not to mention how to manage the panoply of emotions that accompany sex. A recent CDC study estimates that one in four (26 percent) young women between the ages of 14 and 19 in the United States - or 3.2 million teenage girls - is infected with at least one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. The study also found that Black teenage girls were most severely affected. Nearly half of the young Black women surveyed (48 percent) were infected with an STD. Kevin Fenton, M.D., director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, said. "Today's data demonstrate the significant health risk STDs pose to millions of young women in this country every year." High STD infection rates among young women are clear signs that we must demand that young people have access to comprehensive sex and HIV/AIDS education.

Palin Won't Give Interviews Until Campaign Is Ready
lap322
by lap322  9-7-2008
Oh, the ARROGANCE! We've had eight years of arrogance from BushCo, which was quite enough. The only reason the media "focused" on Bristol Palin's pregnancy is because Sarah Palin is a staunch advocate of "abstinence only" education - and her daughter is a perfect example of why that type of "education" does NOT work. And if Davis wants to whine about objective journalism, what about the media frenzy over Obama's pastor, the flag pin non-issue, etc etc etc. If she wants to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency, she had better start answering to the people of the United States. And if she's being so secretive and arrogant now, while just a barely-known candidate, imagine what she would be like if (God forbid) she were to become POTUS? Hell YEAH she's scared to answer to the people! Prove us wrong, beauty queen.

Birds do it, Bees do it, but humans don't!
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  9-4-2008    2
Of course, we should teach our teenage children good judgement, if that is at all possible when it comes to the powerful instinctual urges belonging to all life, the drive to BEGET. Try telling a teeny bobber about love and responsibility. They'll look at you, the same way you look at a dog chasing its tail, bewilderment of such a stupidity lag. But, for most parents, the teen "eye roll" just slides off their back, down to the floor where it can be easily stepped on. But all sarcasm aside, teaching this program alone is not just block-headed, its outrageously dangerous. By not equipping our young with knowledge on self preservation, we neglect the most basic fact of life, the instinctive teachings of fundamental survival techniques. Go and watch some wild life with their young and you will see such training. Birds do it, Bees do it, even Monkeys in the trees do it. Also on http://thinkingblue.blogspot.com

Palin Has Chosen to Exploit Her Own Daughter's Pregnancy
zasel
by zasel  9-4-2008    22
I am disgusted by the way Governor Palin has thrown her 17-year-old pregnant daughter under the bus for political gain. She is exploiting her daughter's misfortune in order to use her to make her anti-abortion point to the extreme right-wing of the Republican party. This woman should be removed from the ticket for abusing her child in this manner.

Abstinence or a condom in every pot
sillysam
by sillysam  9-3-2008
Over the past two decades, as more and more school systems have implemented abstinence programs, the rate of teen pregnancy has declined. The number of high-school students who say they are virgins has increased, and the abortion rate has dropped. Is all of this good news due to abstinence-only programs? It’s a complex subject, and the evidence remains inconclusive. And clearly any school abstinence message is practically drowned out by the vulgar and licentious culture all around us. Still, we may be slowly climbing out of the hole we’ve dug for ourselves. The last thing we should be doing is declaring abstinence education a failure.

Off Limits? I Think Not
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  9-3-2008    4
Ordinarily a situiation such as the pregnancy of Sarah Palin's daughter would be off-limits but the Republican party has been the first to put it front and center as a political tool. The Holier than Anyone Right has used this to showcase how "special" their darling VP hopeful really is and the point has driven home at the RNC yesterday. That and the supposed non-political issue of McCain's POW status. Have the voters become so inured to the Republican machine that they are incapable of seeing through their deceptions and lies?

Gov. Palin on Family Planning: The Eagle Forum questionnaire
zizzy
by zizzy  9-2-2008    3
  3. Will you support funding for abstinence-until-marriage education instead of for explicit sex-education programs, school-based clinics, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools? Sarah Palin: Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support. 8. Do you support parental choice in the spending of state educational dollars? Sarah Palin: Within Alaska law, I support parents deciding what is the best education venue for their child. 12. In relationship to families, what are your top three priorities if elected governor? Sarah Palin: 1) Creating an atmosphere where parents feel welcome to choose the venues of education for their children; 2) Preserving the definition of “marriage” as defined in our constitution, and 3) Cracking down on the things that harm family life: gangs, drug use, and infringement of our liberties including attacks on our 2nd Amendment rights.

The Fundagenitals Strike Again
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  7-30-2008    1
A hint of desperation begins to appear as the Bush presidency runs out of time. In their never ending quest to control women and prevent them from obtaining health care, they're running to pass legislation that attempts to make an end run around the law by using the pretext of religion to deny a woman access to contraceptives by conflating them with abortion. Luckily, so far their narrow religious tenets have been held in check by more tolerant voices. But make no mistake, these Religious Right activists will not stop their campaign to impose their views on the rest of the nation.

Attached was the provision, later set out in Section 510(b) of Title V of the Social Security Act, appropriating $250 million dollars over five years for state initiatives promoting sexual abstinence outside of marriage as the only acceptable standard of behavior for young people. US Teen: We're here. We're sexual. GET USED TO IT.
righthand
by righthand  5-22-2008    32
So it's not just their minds that is to be ignorant? The delusion of abstinence to produce dumb breeding machines and army fodder? Do you remember how difficult it is to keep 'bad' thoughts out of your mind? The harder you try the harder it gets. I've an image of the Christian youth on his knees, blessing himself with one hand while wanking with the other. One of the most important intellectual realizations that I had was knowing that a church's god and my sex were incompatible. I've never regretted my decision. I'm just a human. Let others be mini gods.
