POPSSun + Water = Fuel Michael Grätzel, however, may have a clever way to turn Nocera's discovery to practical use. A professor of chemistry and chemical engineering at the École Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne, Switzerland, he was one of the first people Nocera told about his new catalyst. "He was so excited," Grätzel says. "He took me to a restaurant and bought a tremendously expensive bottle of wine." In 1991, Grätzel invented a promising new type of solar cell. It uses a dye containing ruthenium, which acts much like the chlorophyll in a plant, absorbing light and releasing electrons. In Grätzel's solar cell, however, the electrons don't set off a water-splitting reaction. Instead, they're collected by a film of titanium dioxide and directed through an external circuit, generating electricity. Grätzel now thinks that he can integrate his solar cell and Nocera's catalyst into a single device that captures the energy from sunlight and uses it to split water.

POPSThe Answer Terrifies Them Foreign terrorism against Americans would disappear along with the need for a "war on terror." Civil liberties that were suspended could be restored. A sense of balance and harmony could return to our lives. Ending interventionism would mean that the era of big government in foreign affairs could be brought to an end.

POPSInteresting Article Abstract on Poverty Apparently this research finds that consumer prices are higher (2 - 5%) in poor neighborhoods compared to wealthy neighborhoods. The inability of the poor to shop for consumer goods that are less expensive is determined by their lack of access to cars. They are stuck paying higher prices. The benefits of a competitive market are disproportionately denied to the poor.

POPSHow DID Obama get Change.gov set up so quickly, huh? I've seen a lot of people asking (in tones ranging from concerned to accusing to borderline paranoid) how Obama got Change.gov set up so quickly. I mean, how DID a .gov domain get given to someone non-governmental, huh? Kinda suspicious, don't you think? As a matter of fact, no, I don't think it's suspicious. Change.gov was set up by the General Services Administration as part of their charge to facilitate the transition from the outgoing President to the incoming President-elect. Furthermore, In addition, GSA provides a full suite of services to the outgoing President and former Vice-President as they transition from office. These responsibilities include… (click through to the original for the rest)

POPSMichigan Left Storms Church The church's response? After things settled down, the blasphemy ended, the lewd props removed and the families safe from fear of additional men and women running into and past them the pastor took the stage and led the congregation in one more prayer... not for retribution, or divine justice or a celestial comeuppance (that's what I'd have prayed for) but instead that the troubled individuals who'd just defiled the Lord's house, so full of anger and hate, would know Jesus' love in their lives and God's peace that exceeds human understanding. Yesterday morning defined the difference between a church of believers and Michigan liberals. It also illustrated in shocking, painful detail precisely what we're up against.

POPSWe Must Never Forget Too many egregious Republican party acts to fit in this clip, so be sure to go to the source to read the rest and add to the growing list in the comments. Here are a few more: "We must never forget that the Republican party gave us a president whose chief confidant and advisor was a political hit man and professional liar named Karl Rove." "We must never forget that the Republican party gave us a president who created a gulag in Guantanamo and sanctioned the torture of prisoners." "We must never forget that the Republican party gave us a president whose inner circle participated in the outing of a CIA agent as political retribution." "We must never forget that the Republican party gave us a president who commuted the sentence of convicted perjurer (and unconvicted traitor) Scooter Libby." "We must never forget that the Republican party gave us a president who tried to privatize Social Security."

POPSObamas poor country formative education, blinkers OFF I recently heard Mick Dobson Aboriginal australian spokesman heartened by Obamas intention to embrace issues with the Indiginous Nations issues in USA.I hope like others that he is not blinkered to overseas exploitation of other indiginous cultures and walks the talk globally,, cherry picking will be the cowards way given his pride in statements that he grew up in the "poor" country till he was 10. That country has extremes between rich and poor and justice is often very expensive depending on colour and religion.Melanesians have no respect or rights and due to USA policy in cold war years had their self determination shredded by US and corrupt Sakano,s expansionist ambitions.

POPSMorals vs. Liberty Thomas Davidson expressed it this way: "That which is not free is not responsible, and that which is not responsible is not moral. In other words, freedom is the condition of morality." An interesting perspective that morality inevitably reduces liberty, yet without the liberty to choose, one cannot be moral.

POPSWALL E(volution) :) Miranda, a composer and computer scientist at the University of Plymouth in the UK, hopes that such collaborations between singing robots will one day help him to compose music that no human would ever come up with. "The robots develop their own musical culture. There are no pre-programmed musical rules." This is interesting. We begin to encounter evolution in different dimensions. This is a path for a new intelligent specie... if you haven't seen, i recommend WALL·E movie :)

POPSVoter Intimidation In Philadelphia: Law Enforcement Intervenes Evil Republicans want to intimidate poor people by requiring some kind of polling place ID verification, under the cynical guise of attempting to curb the coordinated voter fraud we now know to be occurring across the country. If only they knew that a much more effective method of intimidation is to have armed supremacists simply block the entrance to the polling place. ”We will not allow some racists and other angry whites, who are upset over an impending Barack Obama presidential victory, to intimidate blacks at the polls,” said. “Most certainly, we cannot allow these racist forces to slaughter our babies or commit other acts of violence against the black population, nor our black president.”

POPSBacteria on the Move, Eating Their Fill Directed bacterial movement that is controlled in this way is known as chemotaxis, and has been observed in individual microbes as well as in colonies that organize into biofilms or other structures. Because M. xanthus uses chemotaxis-like pathways to move over its prey, the researchers call this behavior predataxis. (A video is at nytimes.com/science.) The swarming changed over time. When a lot of E. coli was available, the bacteria moved back and forth tightly; Dr. Kirby likened it to a vacuum cleaner moving repeatedly over a dirty spot. As the prey was consumed, the pattern lengthened and dissipated. Presumably the bacteria needed to release a lot of digestive enzymes at first, but less and less as time went on, he said. Further study of this kind of coordinated behavior may help in understanding certain diseases that involve motile bacteria, Dr. Kirby said, and in developing methods to clean up environmental contaminants using microbes.
