POPSThe Ghoul's Glossary: the 2008 Election Withdrawal: A way to avoid the worst consequences of a moment of pleasurable conquest, which, however, often comes too late to avoid years of support payments. Youth vote: The expectation that 21-year-olds will save the nation from the folly of their elders, in preference to gulping shots from the navels of hot barmaids during a Tuesday happy hour. Zionism: The theory that because Nazis hated Jews, the latter would be much better off all gathered together on disputed land in the midst of 300 million Arabs and Iranians.

POPSAdam Smith Meets Climate Change I don't follow the debate on how to create carbon markets as closely as I'd like. But this is an interesting idea about dividing emissions permits into two classes--for people helping and people really helping. Another thing worth pointing out is that even if Brazil, India and China didn't sign on, they'd still end up adapting many of the technologies that carbon markets would force. Carbon caps, for example, would accelerate progress toward more efficient solar power. But once that technology is there, and the price is lower than hydrocarbons (which most people in the solar industry, at least, believe will happen) then it will make sense for India to slap solar panels on all their roofs too.

POPSPalin: The Anti-Feminist The essence of Sarah Palin's appeal is her ability to succeed while rejecting the liberal feminism that the media elites have always extolled as the only path to personal fulfillment and political power.

POPSWill McCain Oppose $845 Billion Earmark? Obama/Smith Bill
Obama has been busy on the campaign trail but Rep. Adam Smith, the sponsor of the Global Poverty Act in the other body, has been busy complaining about my coverage of this matter! In addition to seeking to eradicate poverty, that Millennium Declaration commits nations to banning "small arms and light weapons" and ratifying a series of treaties, including the International Criminal Court Treaty, the Kyoto Protocol (global warming treaty), the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Millennium Declaration also affirms the U.N. as "the indispensable common house of the entire human family, through which we will seek to realize our universal aspirations for peace, cooperation and development." Does anybody seriously believe that? Does Rep. Adam Smith? Does Senator Barack Obama? Does Senator McCain? It is now on the verge of passage by the full S

POPSJerry Z. Muller: Is the Market Moral? Jerry Z. Muller ("The Mind and the Market: Capitalism in Western Thought") is Professor of history at the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. His essay, which is overflowing with dewy-eyed praise of the morality of capitalism, ought to be noticed and needs critique. Summary: Muller discusses the moral effects of capitalism. He enumerates five positive moral effects of the market. The link between individual autonomy and self-support through legally free labor. The moral quality of self-support arises in good part from the fact that it so often extends beyond the individual, to his or her family and descendants. The market leads to a self-interested concern for others, to what one might call non-altruistic reciprocity. Capitalism creates ever wider forms of association. Capitalism creates new and more complex forms of individuality. ↗Deutsch

POPSOne Good Man Ron Paul is indeed heir to Jefferson's thought, though much buttressed since Jefferson's time by the Austrian School. He does understand this sweep of libertarian economic history, from the origins of theoretical free-market thinking in Spain, to the French entrepreneurs, to Adam Smith, the fallacy of Malthus, the discovery of marginal utility and the creation of the Austrian School itself. He understands where the British went wrong, how the Fabians poisoned the British well, why econometrics – the language and religion of the Western governmental bureaucracy – is fatally flawed, and so on. Does John McCain understand these things? How about Mitt Romney who is said to be presidential material because he looks good? Maybe "Hillary?" How about "Bill?" Do they care? Ron Paul is a cut above. Several cuts. Maybe dozens, or hundreds. This is the man whom they have now set out to smear. The smearers! He's a good and courageous man– and less flawed than most, in my opinion.

POPSNeoLiberals Stiched Up Wealth of Nations.
Their purpose was to develop the ideas and the language which would mask the real intent of the programme - the restoration of the power of the elite - and package it as a proposal for the betterment of humankind. Their project was assisted by ideas which arose in a very different quarter. The revolutionary movements of 1968 also sought greater individual liberties, and many of the soixante-huitards saw the state as their oppressor. As Harvey shows, the neoliberals coopted their language and ideas. Some of the anarchists I know still voice notions almost identical to those of the neoliberals: the intent is different, but the consequences very similar. An early experiment took place in New York, which was hit by budgetary disaster in 1975. Its bankers demanded that the city follow their prescriptions - huge cuts in public services, smashing of the unions, public subsidies for business. The neoliberals and their backers would use bribery or force. The Democrats were neutered by
