Beginning of the End of Free Market Health Care in the U.S.
Rustee
by Rustee  11-17-2008    5
Commercial insurers—who were still required to pay taxes, establish reserves, and adhere to other state insurance regulations—had difficulty competing with the Blues, which, by the 1950s, together were the largest provider of health insurance in America. In an effort to compete with the Blues, more and more for-profit insurance companies offered similar plans, and the model of third-party insurance plans paying the providers directly with little or no input from the patient—and paying for routine care through insurance—became entrenched. This new model was a disaster in the making. In addition to minimizing incentives for insured customers to comparison shop for medical services, it also minimized incentives for doctors and hospitals to compete on price.

The Islamist Role in the 2008 Canadian Elections
merrie
by merrie  11-9-2008
Hashmi runs an Islamic school for girls. Hashmi wears a full niqab (face covering) and encourages young girls to emulate her. She is known for promoting a very conservative Islamic ideology that is based on Wahhabism. She, like other Islamists is in favor of Sharia in Canada. The results of the Canadian election were an eye-opener because all Muslim candidates from all parties lost, with the exception of Yasmin Ratansi, who for some time has been trying to distance herself from her Muslim identity Most ordinary Canadians, well-meaning and decent folks, are fed up with demands for unreasonable accommodation and are no longer willing to put up with politics disguised as religion in the public sphere. Of course, the usual suspects are already screaming Islamophobia - again. There is no rampant Islamophobia in Canada - only an attempt at gradual Islamization.

History: Aaron Burr v. Thomas Jefferson

An endorsement of a great leader over a man surrounded by corruption, in 1800 Alexander Hamilton endorsed Thomas Jefferson over Aaron Burr. Yesterday Colin Powell went the opposite direction and endorsed socialism and corruption over leadership and greatness. Colin Powell is no Alexander Hamilton

For Those Undecided Voters...
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  10-8-2008    2
If you are undecided about who to vote for in the US presidential race (HUH?) Maybe, you should check with Obama's standing in the world.... Which translates something like this... In Percentages GEORGE W BUSH = 0% BARACK OBAMA = 99% JOHN McGRUMPYPANTS = 1% (Just Kidding) :-D Excerpt from article: No matter where you live, no matter which nation you hail from or to which political ideology you tend to adhere, the Bush/McCain approach to leadership -- belligerent, militaristic, religiously closed-minded, culturally stagnant, environmentally reckless, fiscally irresponsible -- has resulted in one of the most epic collapses of a world power in modern history, which in turn has made the rest of the world a more volatile, hostile place for all. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2008/10/08/notes100808.DTL&nl=fix

The Startle Reflex: Key to Your Politics
Kelika
by Kelika  9-20-2008    1
"Researchers shied away from using labels such as conservative and liberal in their study, but they concede that volunteers who registered a heightened sense of threat also tended to subscribe to conservative attitudes. "It's not that conservatives are 'fraidy-cats," says Kevin Smith, a political science professor at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and one of the study's co-authors. "It's that people who support socially protective policies — which, yes, can be interpreted as people taking a conservative position on those policies — are more sensitive to environmental threat."

Left Comprehension Gap
ColoradoRight
by ColoradoRight  9-11-2008    3
At the root of this curious gulf of ignorance has always been the fact that the left is unable to understand that conservatives keenly understand them and the alleged rationales behind their policies. We know they think government needs an active role in social justice, that civic and free market mechanisms like business, church, and charity are insufficient to deal with poverty, urban decay, and the social pathologies that foster them. They think that in order to foster social progress, the state needs to assume active advocacy roles on a limitless range of issues. We understand. We may utterly disagree and denounce it to hell, but we understand. When conservatives see liberals, they see the proponents of bad, inefficient, and eminently corruptible state and social systems that with eye-watering predictability, corrupt those who administer them and harm their alleged beneficiaries. Often for generations.

Abstinence or a condom in every pot
sillysam
by sillysam  9-3-2008
Over the past two decades, as more and more school systems have implemented abstinence programs, the rate of teen pregnancy has declined. The number of high-school students who say they are virgins has increased, and the abortion rate has dropped. Is all of this good news due to abstinence-only programs? It’s a complex subject, and the evidence remains inconclusive. And clearly any school abstinence message is practically drowned out by the vulgar and licentious culture all around us. Still, we may be slowly climbing out of the hole we’ve dug for ourselves. The last thing we should be doing is declaring abstinence education a failure.

Christians who cling to the outdated belief that being gay is a sin are following the pre-scientific notions and social customs that were relevant 2000 years ago but are outdated and wrong today. Partly they adhere to these archaic beliefs because it gives them biblical authority to feel superior (if they are straight) and backs up their notion of persecution when others speak out against their homophobia.
