POPSShould adult adoptees have rights to their birth certificates? November is National Adoption Month and I am going to try and highlight some of the concerns going on in the field of adoptions and post-adoption mental health (my specialty) to raise some more awareness on the topic. I am going to try and be fair and show both sides of the issues. Basically, I want to hear your thoughts and concerns. Tweet me a reply or post a comment below... The article clip below asks the questions of why states don't let adult adoptees have access to their birth certificates? What are your thoughts on it?

POPS Babies Taken From Parents and Sold The adoption fee was split between the orphanages and local officials, the newspaper said. Child trafficking is widespread. A tightening of adoption rules for foreigners in 2006 has proved ineffective in the face of local corruption.

POPSUrge World Leaders: Vote No to Biased Goldstone Report I'm here at the emergency session of the U.N. Human Rights Council, facing a draft resolution by the Arab and Islamic blocs that seeks to endorse the biased Goldstone Report"a 500-page document that falsely accuses Israel of “deliberate attacks” against civilians during its defensive war against Hamas rocket attacks last January. (For details, see www.unwatch.org/goldstone.) Adoption of this dangerous text will trigger proceedings toward the indictment and prosecution of Israeli leaders and officers in the International Criminal Court. What’s at stake is the very survival of democratic societies under the assault of terrorists"enemies of human rights who cynically invoke its protective cover. The debate began yesterday and reaches its climax today. UN Watch will be there to address the assembled delegates. Representing us will be none other than Col. Richard Kemp, former commander of the British forces in Afghanistan,

POPSBill O'Reilly Claims, "There was no cheerleading of President Bush on this network" Oy. Where to begin. Over the years, there's been a mountain of evidence amassed -- both here at C&L as well as such sites as Media Matters and ThinkProgress -- demonstrating Fox News' extraordinary right-wing bias, and its utter lack of anything approaching fairness or balance. Indeed, Fox's adoption of the phrase "fair and balanced" has transformed it into a popular reference to up-is-down Newspeak. The fact that O'Reilly blithely dismisses this mountain as the product of a "far left bias" by those groups is itself clear evidence of his own bias: It's clear he a priori dismisses any facts produced by such groups, regardless of their actual validity.

POPSSiberian husky plays foster mother to kittens More: Now that they've been spayed or neutered, all three cats are available for adoption. "They're all incredibly sweet and friendly," Kidder said. "I'd love to adopt them myself, but I can't. It wouldn't be fair to my cat, Enkidu." But what will Tamerack do when her kittens are adopted? "I'm going to take her up to the snow as a reward," Kidder said. "If she's still missing them after that, I'll guess I'll have to start fostering more kittens."

POPSThe 1,400 legal benefits of marriage in the US
More: spousal exemptions to property tax increases upon the death of one partner who is a co-owner of the home; veterans' discounts on medical care, education, and home loans; joint filing of tax returns; joint filing of customs claims when traveling; wrongful death benefits for a surviving partner and children; bereavement or sick leave to care for a partner or child; decision-making power with respect to whether a deceased partner will be cremated or not and where to bury him or her; crime victims' recovery benefits; loss of consortium tort benefits; domestic violence protection orders; judicial protections and evidentiary immunity; and more.... Most of these legal and economic benefits cannot be privately arranged or contracted for. For example, absent a legal (or civil) marriage, there is no guaranteed joint responsibility to the partner and to third parties (including children) in such areas as child support, debts to creditors, taxes, etc.

POPS Obama’s U.N. Double Talk by Anne Bayefsky The resolution we passed today will also strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty . We have made it clear that the Security Council has both the authority and the responsibility to respond to violations to this treaty. We’ve made it clear that the Security Council has both the authority and responsibility to determine and respond as necessary when violations of this treaty threaten international peace and security. That includes full compliance with Security Council resolutions on Iran and North Korea. Let me be clear: This is not about singling out individual nations. . . . e must demonstrate that international law is not an empty promise, and that treaties will be enforced. However, speaking today in Pittsburgh, Obama admitted that yesterday in Vienna, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France presented detailed evidence to the IAEA demonstrating that the Islamic Republic of Iran has been building a covert uranium . . .

POPSSocial Business; yeah, that sounds about right. Stowe Boyd is pushing for re-conceptualizing and (more expressly) re-naming what we commonly refer to as Enterprise 2.0 -- and I couldn't agree more. As anyone who is in the thick of this change can tell you there are a lot more layers to it than the tech layer. Technology may indeed be the cause, but the sociological, anthropological, and cultural effects are without a doubt the intriguing plotlines in this story.

POPSFurniture store worker discovers new hire is his long-lost brother
More: Well armed with details, Joubert posed a few questions to Nisbet while the two were making deliveries about three weeks ago. "I said, 'Gary, I'm going to ask you a strange question: Are you adopted?'" Joubert recalled. Nisbet gave him a strange look and answered, yes, he was adopted. Then Joubert asked whether Nisbet knew his parents' names. Nisbet, who had learned details of his adoption through a court request, again answered yes. Joubert recited the couple's names — only to meet a mixed reaction of amazement and annoyance. "He takes off his hat and says, 'How did you know that?'" Joubert recalled. When Joubert asked about Nisbet's birth date, June 10, 1974, he knew he had found his long-lost brother. "I about fell over," he said, "because I knew that date." Nisbet… said he was "star-struck and blown away. I couldn't even believe it." He was raised with three brothers and a sister in his adoptive family but never knew he had a biological brother.[/

POPSKennewick woman, 78, meets family for first time She doesn't think her parents ever planned to tell her she was adopted, but it came out when her mother was going through the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. Howell was about 11 years old at the time. Both her parents died a few years later, when she was a teenager. Howell didn't know anything about her birth mother, not even the woman's name. She tried over the years to find out more but came up empty until recently when a relative used her birth name in an internet search. Thousands of miles away in Canada, a great nephew of Marian North Brown -- Howell's birth mother -- was doing an online search of his own. He knew Brown had given a child up for adoption and wanted to see if he could track down the long-lost relative. The searchers happened on each other. In no time, Howell was on the phone with Schulties, 59, of Saskatchewan, one of her seven younger half-brothers and sisters.

POPSCoworkers Find They're Long Lost Brothers more: Randy, the older brother, was the one who first had a hunch they may have been related. "People are saying we look like brothers, and we go on deliveries together for the last month and a half and we keep getting it" Randy said. He had recently dug up some information about his adoption and discovered that he had a brother who was born on June 10, 1974 -- Gary's birthday. For two weeks the two kept the news to themselves, but last week they shared their story withco-workers. Owner Lisa Dow says she cried when one of the brothers told her, "I would have never found him if you didn't hire me to work here." Gary and Randy are still in disbelief. "I've been riding around with this guy for a month and a half and he's my full blooded brother," Randy said shaking his head.

POPSMadonna Gandhi visits Calcutta 'Princess Di, me, Princess Di, even Princess Di did it, but I'm not doing it any more. That's why I'm here, doing good for children rather than getting myself in the news for buying another African kid.' Many were impressed by Gandhi's actions, including the Pope, and he had this to say about the Madonna: 'If it wasn't for the Church banning contraception, there would be no African children up for adoption. Luckily Madonna is now doing practical things to help children, rather than taking one or two out of their safe environments, and turning them into a freak show in America.'
