POPSAlternate History: What Ifs Best site for a thorough definition of what is and what is not "alternate history," and a nice bibliography of key stories and novels that fit the criteria. Most interesting is the fact the author separates Alternate History from Secret and Hidden History which explore more conspiratorial theories and ramifications of History by design instead of a divergent history. Not just for fans of the genre but serious Historians have written essays on "What If' as key events in history may have gone askew,,,

POPSAttack of the killer ravens: Flocks are suddenly slaughtering lambs "Research published last year in the Scientific American also showed the raven to be one of the most intelligent species on the planet - up there with dolphins and apes and, unlike most other birds and animals, capable of learning from their own actions and from observing others' behaviour. They're thought to be one of the few birds that can count, and some have even learned to fashion leaves into special tools for extracting grubs from crevices in trees. In Japan, they were reportedly found dropping nuts onto a dual-carriageway, then darting down to eat them once the cars had cracked them open. Although older ravens (they live up to 25 years) mate for life and travel in pairs, young birds may form flocks of up to several hundred - collective nouns for ravens include an "unkindness", a "conspiracy", and a "murder" - which swoop on farm animals"

POPSProduct Placement, even in your kids books It is the trend. It's annoying. But do the kids mind? Probably not. Nick Hornby's book is riddled with the names "Starbucks" and Tony Hawk's biography. Did it stop me from reading? No. Did it annoy the crap out of me like the way Pepsi is so prominently displayed in certain movies? YES! Here's a NYT article on the issue and 2 writers opinions. Interesting reading.

POPSYour Partner Not As Fresh As Your Daily Cyber-Porn? "As cyber sex has become more and more of a problem, what has shifted for me is the realization that many people who were into cyber sex didn't fit the classic profile of sex addicts," says Patrick Carnes, author of "In the Shadows of the Net: Breaking Free of Compulsive Online Sexual Behavior." He has spent 30 years studying and establishing sex addiction as a field of psychological dysfunction. "For most people this is not an issue," says John Bancroft, the former director of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction. "But others have always had a problem keeping any kind of sexual stimuli under control and they have never had opportunities to go over the top as they do now."

POPSAdult Theme Movie Trailers - The Web Has It All If you don't want your kids to see things, keep them off the internet! That's about the whole name of the game with parental censorship. If it's out there, and available, it can be found on the web. And children sneaking into R-rated movies is nothing new. I'm sure my parents even saw things in movies "back in the day" that they weren't supposed to see or be exposed to. Where there's a will, there's a way!

POPSMel Stuart on the making of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory An interview with the man behind the film version of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." I never knew the movie was funded by the Quaker Oats Co. as part of a product tie-in that never materialized. Stuart describes such arcana as the difficulties of working with Oompa-Loompas and how to keep a chocolate river from smelling bad.

POPSGore Galore but a Violent Game Can’t Hold a Gutbucket to the Movies The problem is that in addition to just hitting a bad guy a couple of times with a bat, there are other options, like slitting his throat, sticking a scythe in his nose and yanking his head back. Rather than stab him with a shard of glass, you can stab him, wrap a cord around his neck, stuff his head in a toilet and smash him on the back of the head. Pretty sick game. And I agree that it should get an AO rating.. but then again... If it is rated "M" for mature, shouldn't that mean that it is no suitable for kids? I mean why do parents buy these games that are CLEARLY rated "M" on the box (BIG LETTERS)? I mean do they think the titles of the games ("Grand Theft Auto", "Manhunt", "hitman: Bloodmoney") are just jokes? Come the fuck on now...
