POPSRacial Profiling Ruckus in Palo Alto "Victims of the recent crime wave in Palo Alto have variously described their assailants as being black, Latino, white, or Pacific Islander males, so many residents of Palo Alto and neighboring cities are wondering why the police chief is apparently targeting African Americans. Community leaders including Congresswoman Anna Eshoo and Palo Alto Mayor Larry Klein expressed deep concern about Chief Johnson's ability to continue to act as head of the city's police department. Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, issued a statement condemning the chief's original remarks. Eshoo said that Chief Johnson had "demonstrated a profound lack of judgment and leadership." In an official statement the Congresswoman said that the Police Chief should rescind her comments and orders or resign. Palo Alto Mayor Larry Klein said the chief's remarks were "unacceptable, unconstitutional and un-American."

POPSThe Australian: I Come to Hail Bush, not Bury Him There will come a time when most Americans will miss President Bush. This sea change will be enabled when Dear Leader begins to reveal his weird nefarious radical visions revealed in Mein Kampt... er... Dreams of My Fathers.

POPSHopes for the Future I hope that new government programs and spiderwebs of red tape do not pop up to interfere with American productivity, and that we can quickly get our financial footing again. We have to understand that an economic correction needs to take place and the only way out of the coming recession is to go through it. Efforts to avoid it can only prolong it. I hope we can somehow find our way back to sound money and reject corporate cronyism. We cannot address our budget problems at home without changing our disastrous foreign policy abroad. I am hopeful that the new administration can take on the mantle of peace and diplomacy in foreign policy that many Americans feel they were promised. Many other nations also have this hope, which exudes from their congratulatory sentiments offered after the election. They hope that national sovereignty will be respected. They hope that through diplomacy violence and war can be averted. I hope so too.

POPSOn Proposition 8: Something to consider For years, the California Christian right apparatus, long hampered by their nativism and racism, had been unable to make inroads into the state's brown, yellow and black population - a demographic goldmine in a state that is more than 50 percent minority and growing. Prop 8 may prove their goldrush. From the very beginning they bought up ad space in Chinese, black, Spanish, and Korean media; they hosted massive rallies for ethnic Christians. The Sunday before election day, I went to Los Angeles City Hall for the most celebratory, most diverse rally I have ever attended; it was organized by Yes on 8 Chinese advocates. POPSTake a Bow, America It can be easy in such a moment of triumph to lose sight of the agony wrought by the unrelieved evil of racism and to forget how crucial a role anti-black racism played in shaping American life since the first slaves were dumped ashore 400 years ago. Blacks have been holding fast to the promise of America for all that time. Not without anger. Not without rage. But with a fidelity that in the darkest moments — those moments when the flow of blood seemed like it would never stop, when enslaved families were wrenched apart, when entire communities were put to the torch, when the breeze put the stiffened bodies of lynched victims in motion, when even small children were murdered and Dr. King was taken from us — even in those dire moments, African-Americans held fast to the promise of America with a fidelity that defied logic.

POPS Obama a "Weapon of Mass Destruction" Barack Obama's former pastor complained Thursday that the media used him as a "weapon of mass destruction" in an attempt to derail Obama's campaign for the presidency.

POPSNation Finally Shitty Enough To Make Social Progress I know the Onion is satire but this strikes much too close to home to be labeled mere satire. As we enter a new era of equality for all people, the election of Barack Obama will decidedly be a milestone in U.S. history, undeniable proof that Americans, when pushed to the very brink, are willing to look past outward appearances and judge a person by the quality of his character and strength of his record. So as long as that person is not a woman.

POPSLearn from Obama's Victory: The Nation, Bangkok, Thailand John McCain, Obama's Republican opponent, promptly congratulated the winner, vowed to help him and told his supporters to accept the outcome. Obama thanked and praised McCain for his spirit. Political opponents in Thailand, on the other hand, attack each other any way they can. Conditions must be laid down just to start a political dialogue. Obama credited his success to donors who supported him no matter how much or little money they could give. His singling out for praise of a 106-year-old woman who made a great effort to vote could also make Thailand's genuine advocates of democracy envious of the Americans' participation.

POPSNo Black or White America. Just United States. Thank you young people of America and the enlightened older ones who see only people and not skin colour. You will be prouder of this day forever. You have a jewel that might well eclipse the Kennedy brothers, Irish and Catholic. Now I'll worry that his life is preserved long enough to fix America. God, was it darkest before the brightest dawn. No sleep. Still buzzing. No drugs. No alcohol. Kids outside the White House was the best spontaneous memory.

POPSFinally No matter who wins the electoral college, the 2008 presidential election will be a historic one, as the nation will send either an African-American or the oldest first-term president to the White House. A McCain win would also mean the first female vice president in the nation's history. The 2008 presidential election has proved to be the most expensive in history. Americans are expected to head to the polls in record numbers. http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/11/04/election.president/index.html?eref=time_us

POPSSquare Pegs Something doesn't make sense. I suspect some people claiming to be atheists either lie, don't understand the meaning of atheist or the survey is flawed. As far as the great unwashed goes, it seems that most still cling to fairy tales and myths.

POPSHow Long to Shed the Illusion? <"A creature of universities and churches and nonprofit institutions, the Illinois senator, with the blessing and acquiescence of his upscale supporters, has glided past these hard distinctions. On the face of it, it must be surmised that his affluent devotees are ready to foot the bill for the new order, or are convinced that after victory the old ways will endure, and that Mr. Obama will govern from the center. It was no accident that the white working class was the last segment of the population to sign up for the Obama journey. Their hesitancy was not about race. They were men and women of practicality; they distrusted oratory, they could see through the falseness of the solidarity offered by this campaign.">
