Aging may be a mistake, and not a given
balthazarus
by balthazarus  Yesterday 6:10 PM    1
"I don't think there are any theories that account for the vast differences in life spans between animals. Nobody knows why we age in 80 years and chimpanzees age in 40," he said. Kim said he thinks the worm results may one day answer questions such as why the human kidney ages faster than the liver or why some clams live for 400 years and whales can live for 200 years. "Why can't I live as long as a whale? How hard would it be?" he asked. it is a very good question...

Drug for Longer Life
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  Yesterday 8:58 AM    3
The other drug is a small synthetic chemical that is a thousand times as potent as resveratrol in activating sirtuin and can be given at a much smaller dose. Safety tests in people have just started, with no adverse effects so far. The hope is that activating sirtuins in people would, like a calorically restricted diet in mice, avert degenerative diseases of aging like diabetes, heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s. There is no Food and Drug Administration category for longevity drugs, so if the company is to submit a drug for approval, it needs to be for a specific disease. Nonetheless, longevity is what has motivated the researchers and what makes the drugs potentially so appealing.

How one day we may all be eternally young
wildcat
by wildcat  Yesterday 7:44 AM    1
"We found a normal developmental programme that works in young animals, but becomes unbalanced as the worm gets older. It accounts for the lion's share of molecular differences between young and old worms." If ageing is not a cost of unavoidable chemistry, but is instead driven by changes in regulatory genes, the ageing process may not be inevitable, he added.

Mirrors Don’t Lie.. : -)
einbar
by einbar  7-22-2008    6
“When people are made to be self-aware, they are likelier to stop and think about what they are doing,” Dr. Bodenhausen said. “A byproduct of that awareness may be a shift away from acting on autopilot toward more desirable ways of behaving.” Physical self-reflection, in other words, encourages philosophical self-reflection, a crash course in the Socratic notion that you cannot know or appreciate others until you know yourself. Death In A Bottle
debbyski
by debbyski  7-21-2008
Should someone dying from terminal cancer have the right to end their life peacefully? Obviously, this is a very controversial subject, and some of the things that bother me are the depression, state of mind, and pain one is in when dying. Maybe because I had a NDE myself, I feel as though there is a certain wrongness to it, but I can't speak for anyone else.

GOP Convention Lacks Enthusiasm

I wonder if they'll realize that forced enthusiasm looks even worse than no enthusiasm? The piece also tells us that while Obama can expect good coverage during bona fide swing state Colorado's DNC, McCain's down double-digits in Minnesota -- happy photo ops aren't nearly as likely as big protests.

Mechanism Behind Mind-body Connection Discovered
Mohir
by Mohir  7-16-2008    2
The study reveals how stress makes people more susceptible to illness. The findings also suggest a potential drug target for preventing damage to the immune systems of persons who are under long-term stress, such as caregivers to chronically ill family members, as well as astronauts, soldiers, air traffic controllers and people who drive long daily commutes.

The debate over mammograms for elderly women
Lexica
by Lexica  7-8-2008
"The mammography study, published in May in The Journal of Clinical Oncology, looked at the records of more than 12,000 patients aged 80 and older who were given diagnoses of breast cancer from 1996 to 2002. It found that among those who had a mammogram every year or two before their diagnosis, 68 percent found the cancer at an early stage, compared with 33 percent of those who skipped mammograms altogether. "Five years after the breast cancer diagnosis, 75 percent of the frequent screeners were alive, compared with only 48 percent of those who had not been screened for at least five years before their cancer was found. "But those who had frequent mammograms were not only more likely to survive breast cancer, the study’s authors said, they were more likely to survive other illnesses as well, meaning that they may simply have been healthier to begin with."
