POPSAlternative Fuels - Dimethylfuran The Future of DMF as a transportation fuel is up in the air. For example, some of its environmental effects are still unknown. However, according to the head of the research done at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Professor Dumesic, this process of production shows that “we can produce a liquid transportation fuel from biomass that has energy density comparable to petrol.”

POPSECOCITY Builders An ecocity is a human settlement that enables its residents to live a good quality of life while using minimal natural resources. Its buildings make best use of sun, wind and rainfall to help supply the energy and water needs of occupants. Generally multistory to maximize the land available for greenspace. It is threaded with natural habitat corridors, to foster biodiversity and to give residents access to nature for recreation. Its food and other goods are sourced from within its borders or from nearby, in order to cut down on transport costs. The majority of its residents live within walking or cycling distance of their workplace, to minimise the need for motorised transport. Frequent public transport connects local centres for people who need to travel further. Local car sharing allows people to use a car only when needed. POPS ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE IN CHINA by Deanna “Dee” Taylor China’s environment is deteriorating on all fronts: air, land and water and is negatively affecting biodiversity and the health and quality of life for individuals. The statistics on air pollution, loss of farmland, toxic waters, and biodiversity are alarming. The Chinese government’s lack of sustainable water management policies has contributed to water pollution that significantly harms public health, water shortage and contamination, and loss of community livelihood and local income.

POPSThe Myth Of Energy Independence Where did this notion of energy "independence" come from? Energy independence is not a new idea in American politics. Richard Nixon first started talking about it in 1974. The problem is it's no more feasible today than it was then. What about cellulosic ethanol, made from switch grass or corn stubble? I cite an analysis that was done by former CIA Director John Deutsch, who's now a professor at MIT. If his estimates are correct, producing enough cellulosic ethanol to displace just half of America's daily consumption of 20 million barrels of oil would require the U.S. to plant an area approximately equal to 1.5 times the size of Texas. That's a big area. If we could get the efficiency of the photovoltaic panels high enough, solar, ultimately, has more applicability. There are a whole lot of rooftops in this country you could put them on. Researchers are having better luck at converting larger parts of the light spectrum into energy.

POPSA Ravenous Dragon
Chinese companies will inevitably find themselves in fierce competition with Western ones for natural resources, as they must if global markets are to work efficiently. For the most part, however, they do not operate very differently from their peers. To the extent that the Chinese government does subsidise oil production, it helps to bring down the price for everyone else (its subsidies for oil consumption are another matter). As the world's biggest consumer of many commodities, China naturally wants to ensure a steady supply of them to keep its economy going. But markets for commodities are global, and the risk of any one consumer cornering supplies, or securing them at a lower price, is negligible. this special report will argue that concerns about the dire consequences of China's quest for natural resources are overblown. China does indeed treat some dictators with kid gloves, but it is hardly alone in that. Its companies do not always uphold the highest standards, but many...

POPSAtlanta Running Out of Water This is a really scary situation. In summer 07 there were wildfires in Georgia that affected the air quality as far away as Birmingham. The drought was less severe then.

POPSE-Zone...a new environmental website for elementary students Another great new environmental website from the Canadian government; this time for elementary students. The Ministry of the Environment has created this website for elementary students "to explain the challenges facing our planet and inspire them to take actions that protect the environment - all within an interactive media experience that includes music clips and videos. "Obviously.ca is unique. Most environmental government websites bombard you with information and boring statistics," said Sandra Giangioppo, a student at William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute in Toronto. "But obviously.ca uses creative techniques such as video clips and interesting facts to grab your attention and really help you understand the important environmental issues out there. It is a very innovative and cool approach to increasing environmental issues awareness."

POPS"Don't squirt metals up your nose"... 'safe' heavy metals hit fish senses The more we learn about pollution, the more evident it is that we are really fouling up the health and well-being of nearly every creature on this planet. Everything that we put into our water, air and soil has an impact on living creatures. There are implications for human health, of course, as with any water quality issue: "Metals may have the same effect in humans. The makers of the cold remedy Zicam, which contains zinc, recently settled out of court for $12 million with people who reported losing their sense of smell after spraying the product into their noses. The company maintains the remedy is safe. Studies have not been conducted to test whether zinc destroys human sensory abilities, but given what's happening in aquatic ecosystems, Pyle believes it could. "Don't squirt metals up your nose," he says. "That would be my advice."

POPSAppalachian Trail: Canary in the Coal Mine "People will read that on 25 or 30 days in a given year, it's considered unhealthy to walk on the Appalachian Trail, and we think that's going to grab people's attention more than if they just read about air quality trends in general," he said. That's also why volunteers will be critical to the project's success. It's one thing for people to read about technical reports on bird migrations, acid rain or air quality, Startzell says. "We think it's another thing when people learn about that firsthand by actually helping to collect that information," he says."
