by AtlLiberal  11-16-2008
Some predictions are vaguly on target. Most respond through the lens of 1900 and offner no new insights. I suspect our predictions will seem as naive in 2100.

Nazi 'death trains' exhibition
mickfinn
by mickfinn  1-25-2008
Thousands of trains carried people to the extermination camps. Innocent people were packed into cattle wagons, often with little food or water, and scarcely enough air to breathe. For the Reichsbahn, it was a booming business - it was paid for each adult and child it transported to the extermination camps. Adult prisoners and children over four were charged a fare - four pfennigs per km for adults, two pfennigs for children - earning the railway millions of marks. From 1941, trainloads of 400 or more people, which amounted to huge overcrowding, received a 50% discount. Deutsche Bahn said the tracks and freight of the Reichsbahn were integral to the Nazis' extermination plan. "Without the Reichsbahn, the industrial murder of millions of people would not have been possible," said Susanne Kill, a Deutsche Bahn historian. After Berlin, the exhibition is moving to other German stations, including Frankfurt, Halle, Muenster and Munich.

Dozens Report Mile-Wide UFO Over Texas
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  1-15-2008    39
Just imagine if aliens exist!! Abductions, secret flights, missing time, men in black, being probed and tortured and terrorised by alien foreign invaders!! Hmm.... I don't think we should fear UFO's. If aliens exist, I'm pretty sure they're just trying to liberate us and bring us some freedom and democracy. Optical Illusion?

Ship emissions kill 60,000 a year
pokkets
by pokkets  11-8-2007    1
Most ships run on bunker fuel, which is cheaper than distillate, but more polluting. Many freighters are registered in countries with few regulations. It also occurred to me that the bunker fuel was a product from oil refineries, and companies who need to get rid of it somehow to avoid it lining the bottom of the barrel. Just burn the evidence

U.S. Sinks North Korean Ship w/ Nuclear Cargo for Iran
pkronfield
by pkronfield  8-22-2007    5
There's more in this link. Iran has offered N.Korea $1.5 billion for discarded N.Korean nuclear items, and France helped sink another N.Korean freighter bound for Iran. Didn't Bush hit it right about the "Axis of Evil"?

100 Percent Cargo Inspection: Part Deux
ejoiner2
by ejoiner2  7-30-2007    1
Congress apparently didn't read my article of April 7th, 2007 on the practical difficulties of 100 percent cargo inspection called for under House bill HR-1. HR-1 requires 100 percent cargo inspection of all air and ocean cargo. Forget that we don't have the current technology to perform the scanning. Forget that there is no clearly defined mandate for what's to be scanned. Forget that it will take a loooonnnngg while to figure out the union rules on how this will take place. The one concession I can see in the passed bill is that rather than implementing this deal by the end of 2010, it has a 5 year implementation window with the ability of the government to extend the deadline 2 years...

Airbus Posts Record Loss of 572 million Euros
ejoiner2
by ejoiner2  3-10-2007
Troubles in development and deployment of the A380 continue to impact Airbus and parent company EADS. Cancellations of orders, including all orders for the A380F freighter, by both FedEx and UPS, have forced the European aircraft maker to consider elimination of up to 10,000 jobs as well as spin off of a number of plants throughout Europe.
