POPSHawaii’s 1st Jewish Governor: Palin More Experienced Than Obama “It’s not like being in Congress, where no one might know you’re responsible,” she told Haaretz. “When you’re a governor you’re the one to make a decision. It’s a great, great preparation for a job such as vice president.” According to Lingle, the Republican Party is likely to attract growing numbers of Jewish voters because “the Republicans have a much stronger position on Israel than the Democrats, and that’s why I think more people will be seen on the Republican side. Lingle was interviewed on the FOX programme and she noted that Palin spoke at an energy conference in Hawaii and impressed everyone with her knowledge of the issues. While there she went into labour and flew back to Alaska to have her baby and was back on the job shortly thereafter. "Senator McCain’s commitment to Israel is strong and well-known, and I assure your readers that he would not put someone on that ticket who did not have the same feelings."

POPSSen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) Indicted For Being Sleazy And the “Congressional White Caucus” won’t jump to defend Sen. Stevens the way the Congressional Black Caucus did for William Jefferson. Why? Because Sen. Stevens’ actions — just like those of Sen. Jefferson — are indefensible. Oh, and the fact that there isn’t anything as absurdly segregationist and just plain absurd as a Congressional White Caucus. ________ With the possible exception of Rep. John Culberson (R-TX), Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), Sen. Jim Demint (R-SC), and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CN) — I think we should expel every other member of Congress and start over with people of honest and integrity…but more than that, people who don’t think my money is their money. Leaders committed to truly small and limited government. Sadly, our country is headed in exactly the opposite direction.

POPSIslamic world should learn from Turkey court ruling its relations with the United States have frayed over the past few years. CNN: Why is that? Zakaria: Mostly because of the Bush administration. The Pentagon never forgave Turkey for not allowing a second front (through Turkey) for the invasion of Iraq.

POPSA Gleam of Sufi Hope in the Darkness <<<Another belief he shares with Sufism is the idea that God, humanity and the natural world are all linked, and might even be part of a single entity, a sort of cosmic trinity. This idea has practical consequences. For example, it suggests that a believer will love and respect humanity and the natural world as they would God. It also means that no one should be seen as an outsider.>>> Who today represents a Christian counterpart?

POPS Profile: The PKK The Thorn In Turkey's Side Although Turkey's ruling AK Party has recently made political gains in the south-east, many Kurds, and the European Union, say the government needs to do a lot more to improve the rights of the country's Kurdish minority. A group said to be an offshoot of the PKK, calling itself the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, has claimed responsibility for a number of bomb blasts in Istanbul and Turkish Mediterranean resorts. The group also swears allegiance to Ocalan. And the last few years have also seen the rise of a sister organisation - Pejak - which has carried out attacks against Iran. Turkey believes that the PKK currently has several thousand fighters based in the Candil mountains of northern Iraq; an area which is also said to be a base for Pejak. In 1999, it suffered a major blow when its leader, Abdullah Ocalan, was arrested.

POPSGul is the 11th President of Turkey In April, the army expressed its concern after Mr Gul only narrowly failed to gain enough support from MPs to become president in a first round. The following stand-off between the AKP and secularist parties in parliament triggered a political crisis that led to snap elections in July. The AKP won those polls convincingly with 47% and again nominated Mr Gul for the post of president.

POPSTurkey's Gul vows secular agenda Mr Gul's previous presidential bid triggered protests in May because of his Islamist roots. Opponents dislike the fact that his wife wears the Muslim headscarf, which is banned in state institutions. The failure of the bid led to an early general election, in which Mr Gul's party won a convincing victory.
