POPSWomen trafficking, horrible also in numbers Some more horrifying statistics: In the region of South Eastern Europe, comprising Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, FYR Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, 90% of foreign women in the sex business are alleged victims of trafficking, 10% to 15% of these women and girls are under the age of 18 years. The majority of victims are recruited in Albania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Romania. The women and girls are often initially trafficked on the local market. They are being moved from one place to another and after a while sold abroad. following a movie i saw, thought to look into figures and was amazed. this is one of the lowest levels that human is reaching. and i say human because putting it away, shoving it aside, excusing oneself from that sight will not do. it is something in within human capabalities, and we should acknowledge that, also the strive to undo it.

POPSThe Ironic Rule of Law Did they copy this from a US Justice Department press release? First they pirate our DVDs and now our legalistic dissembling! Pioneering torture policy authors like John Yoo are apt to be pretty steamed.

POPSCenturies old code survives in remote Albanian village The code covers everything from inheritances and the rights of the church to the treatment of livestock. In Theth, nobody will sell land to an outsider, or even to another villager. Brides must come from outside the valley, a tradition that follows along the lines of the Kanun's rule that marriage within the same clan is forbidden. "The Kanun is the law. Just like the state law," explains Gjovalin Lokthi, 39, a gruff "kryeplak," or elected chief of the village.

POPSEritrea blasts US policy in horn of Africa To those who feel that no other countries should criticize the US-Just because Eritrea is not a strong powerful nation does not mean they have no right to express their opinion, nor does it make that opinion any less valid. An example would be Albania. Probably nowhere on earth is President Bush more beloved. While I don't agree with their opinion, the fact that they are a small less powerful nation does not invalidate it.

POPSFrench Cuisine Worthy of World Heritage Recognition? Some French chefs, with support from President Nicolas Sarkozy, are spearheading a movement to have French cuisine recognized as a world heritage cuisine by UNESCO. The United Nations body is known for recognizing sites like Machu Picchu, the Great Wall of China, and even storytelling of Kyrgyzstan, but it has yet to recognize a cuisine. Do you think it should?

POPS Kosovo lives: Between two worlds An interesting story of an English teacher....it is very difficult for outsiders to fathom what (caste/religion notwithstanding) people in the region have been through...

POPSAn American in Albania ...The Albanians of Montenegro were lucky, I thought as we approached the customs agents, to live under Josip Broz Tito's relatively lenient communist system in Yugoslavia instead of suffering Enver Hoxha's full-bore Stalinist regime just a few miles away in Albania proper. Hoxha, who ranks among the most thoroughly oppressive tyrants in history, made Tito's dictatorship look libertarian....

POPSFrom Masseur to $300 million Arms Dealer? Only in ... "How did a company run by a 21-year-old president and a 25-year-old former masseur get a sensitive $300 million contract to supply ammunition to Afghan forces?" asks the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Tuesday Representative Henry A. Waxman, Democrat of California.

POPS7 Terrible Abuses Suffered By Women Around The World Barbaric - we have no right to call ourselves developed nations of the 21st century until such scourges are removed from the face of this earth forever and those guilty of these heinous crimes are severely punished. I ask what 'honor' do people speak of when they treat women so degradingly?!

POPSThe United States of Stupidity: We, the people, didn't used to be this dumb
What d'you mean "we", Kimosabe? But he goes on: It used to be that just the so-called "Red States" (come to think of it, the Red-Blue thing was pretty stupid) were allergic to facts. But now it's all of us. We just sit here and take it all in, complain about gas prices when oil companies run the White House, wonder why the airlines are collapsing and there is no transportation alternative: It's the stupidity, stupid! While we were sidetracked by John Edwards' haircuts, the oil companies got Congress to destroy Amtrak for them — Bangladesh now has a more efficient passenger rail system than we do. While we sat transfixed by the magnificence of Angelina Jolie's lips and Britney Spears' shaven crotch, Croatia, Latvia and Albania moved ahead of the United States on the global Environmental Sustainability Index. While we munched freedom fries and stockpiled duct tape, our national treasury was looted. And so on. We the people didn't used to be this dumb. Or maybe we're just stupefied b

POPSThousands come out for Bush in Croatia But I thought the whole world hated him. Some people still value our ideology and the standard that the President bears. Those who have known oppression are not burdened with the PC of our pampered minorities...who believe they have it so bad. I've never been 'oppressed' or under a dictatorial regime. For all our faults, I still want to value and promote the virtues of freedom and peace within communities. The world is quickly changing...and not for the better. :~(
