"Thus have I been wishing to reveal to you in this treatise, as far as may be lawful to me, the Stone of the Ancients, that you, too, might possess the knowledge of this highest of earthly treasures for your health and comfort in this valley of sorrow. I write about it, not for my own good, but for that of posterity, and though my words be few and simple, that which they import is of immeasurable magnitude. Ponder them well, that you also may find the Rock which is the foundation Stone of truth, the temporal blessing, and the eternal reward."

The Lord of the Rings and the Esoteric Symbolism of the Abrahamic Faiths
Yafi07
by Yafi07  8-17-2008    1
Tolkien was a Roman Catholic and he delved deeply into the world of archetypes and symbols. Mahmoud Shelton demonstrates how Tolkien used many of these symbols in a distinctly Sufic, alchemical manner in the quest pursued by, and in the lives of, his characters. The mystical traditions of all three Abrahamic religions, while possessing their own distinct perspectives and practices, are nevertheless also very close in what one might term an Abrahamic symbolic pool which is shared by all three religions in varying alignments and semantic expressions, To speak in Sufi terms, the core of the quest is the journey of return to a realization of unity with the One. The path is love, the fuel is love, and the goal is love. Alchemy is the process of transformation that love ffects.

List Universe's Top 10 Unsolved Mysteries
revenantdm
by revenantdm  6-5-2008
Excellent primer on many of the more well known mysteries like the Shroud, the Black Dahlia, Mary Celeste and Jack the Ripper. The less well-known mysteries like the Babushka Lady, the Voynich Manuscript, The Taos Hum, The Zodiac Killer and the Comte de Sainte-Germaine are informative in a few short paragraphs and I suggest those interested to use this as a stepping stone into their own search for the weird, unusual, bizarre and truly unsolved mysteries.

Creationist Science Teachers
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  5-21-2008    5
Would administrators sanction teaching alchemy in place of chemistry? How about palmistry in lieu of statistics. How about replacing basic meteorology with the Thor hypothesis? These people have no business in a science class teaching science. Either move them so they do no harm or fire them.

Mysterious people
Aribeth

who appeared in the village of Woolpit in Suffolk, UK, in the 12th century. The children were brother and sister and they had green colored skin. Their appearance was normal in all other areas. They spoke an unrecognized language and refused to eat anything other than pitch from bean pods. Eventually their skin lost its green color. When they learned English they explained that they were from the ‘Land of St Martin’ which was a dark place because the sun never rose far above the horizon. They claimed that they were tending their father’s herd and followed a river of light when they heard the sounds of bells - finding themselves in Woolpit. Some of the more unusual theories proposed for the origin of the children are that they were Hollow Earth children, parallel dimension children, or Extraterrestrial children.

Houston, We Have A Problem...
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  12-13-2007    1
A majority of Americans cling to a fairy tale to describe the origins of man (and women). To have their fantasies threatened evidently scares them to death. Because of this threat to their faith they lie without blinking an eye. Using their twisted logic that religion is not their motivation for squeezing Intelligent Design into science class falls apart when applied to other disciplines. There is no national push to teach astrology as an alternative to astronomy. There is no push to teach alchemy alongside chemistry. The only push is to teach Creationism (in the thin guise of ID) alongside evolution. And the drumbeat of lies from the IDers continues. Their discredited "science" (see Dover Penn trial) continues to be their best hope of getting god into the classroom and they won't stop until this is accomplished.

Champion Imperils Himself
spherepet

Wu Lihong, an activist who crusaded for decades about the pollution of Lake Tai, the center of China’s ancient “land of fish and rice.” Mr. Wu, however, bore silent witness. Shortly before the algae crisis erupted in May, the authorities here in his hometown arrested him. In mid-August, with a fetid smell still wafting off the lake, a local court sentenced him to three years on an alchemy of charges that smacked of official retribution. Senior officials have tried to address environmental woes mostly through pulling the traditional levers of China’s authoritarian system: issuing command quotas on energy efficiency and emissions reduction; punishing corrupt officials who shield polluters; planting billions of trees across the country to hold back deserts and absorb carbon dioxide. But they do not dare to unleash individuals who want to make China cleaner. Grass-roots environmentalists arguably do more to expose abuses than any edict emanating from Beijing. But they face a politica
