My Vote For President!
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-4-2008    3
Healthcare: Free healthcare for everyone! With the doctors we have left, we will need to make sure that we keep as many people alive as possible. Abortion: Not really an option since we lost 2/3 of the world's population. National Security: How about international security. We need to protect our world from any future invasion. There won't be another alien attack under Whitmore's watch. Education: It looks like education is free too. We need all the smart people we can get. Due do the disaster we only have a few college campuses to choose from. We want a President who doesn't believe in red or blue states, but one who believes that we should spend every single dollar on a pending alien attack. He should be a single dad who's sort of kind of looking for a woman. These are the things I need to see in my candidate. :p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ag44dRO8LEA

"Will We Soon find Life in the Heavens?"
cakebelly
by cakebelly  10-28-2008
'let's hope there's intelligent life somewhere up in Space 'cos there's bugger all down here on earth" continues In the coming months, two new tools will greatly expand astrobiologists' capacity to hear and see other promising signs of life. Later this summer, the nonprofit SETI Institute, named with the acronym for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, will begin listening for alien broadcasts on the new $50 million Allen Telescope Array. A spread of 42 radio dishes in California's Cascade Mountains, the array is the first such facility built specifically to listen for E.T. "We're looking for life that's clever enough to hold up its side of the conversation," says Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the SETI Institute. The array, half funded by Microsoft mogul Paul Allen, will search for alien signals at a clip "hundreds to thousands times faster" than current SETI projects, says Shostak.

Scientist develops programme to understand alien languages
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-17-2008
All human languages have "functional terms" that bracket phrases - words like "if" and "but" in English. According to Dr Elliott, such terms in any language, are separated by up to nine words or characters. This limit on phrase length seems to correspond to the level of human cognition - how much information we are able to process at once. In an alien language, analysing these phrases might make it possible to gauge how clever the authors of the message are. If they are much smarter than us, there would a lot of words packed into the phrases. The programme should also be able to break a language up into crucial words such as nouns and verbs, even though their meaning is unknown.

Transformers - The Nature of Alien Life
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-23-2008
The driving factor is a pragmatic desire to improve mental capacity. Alien beings may have already reached a point in their evolution where, having exhausted the potential of their biological brains, they have taken the next logical step and opted for robotic brains equipped with artificial intelligence. This brain swap may not be as far off for humans as one might think. In only a few decades, the computer revolution here on Earth has produced supercomputers capable of performing more than a quadrillion calculations per second. According to research by Hans Moravec, an artificial-intelligence expert at Carnegie Mellon University, that rate trumps the human brain’s estimated top speed of 100 trillion calculations per second. Some scientists speculate that in a few decades, an event called the technological singularity will occur, and machines armed with computer brains will become sentient and surpass human intelligence. Civilizations equipped with technology light-years ahead

Thou art that--Alan Watts
papananook
by papananook  8-18-2008
(thanks to Cathy E. in LJ...Watts continues: If you go out at night and look at the stars you will realize that they are millions and millions and billions of miles away - vast configurations out in space! You can lie back and look at that and say, "Whew! Surely I hardly matter. I am just a tiny little peek-a-boo on this weird spot of dust called Earth, and all that out there was going on billions of years before I was born, and will still go on billions of years after I die." Nothing may seem stranger to you than that - more different than you. But there comes a point when you will say, "Why, that's me!" And when you know that, you never die."

Micropbes Under Sea Floor Shows Possibility of Alien Life
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-27-2008
However, this population lives at an unusual rate. Single-celled organisms usually consume food for energy and then rather than grow larger, simply divide and reproduce themselves. While the Bacteria Escherichia Coli, as an example, doubles its numbers every 20 minutes, these Archaea double on the order of hundreds or thousands of years and consume very little energy. "In essence, these microbes are almost, practically dead by our normal standards," says House. "They metabolize a little, but not much." According to House, organisms metabolizing at such slow rates is what we could expect to find in other areas of our solar system because such environments have much less energy available than on Earth. Perhaps, similar organisms may be in hydrothermal vents beneath the ice of Europa -- the second moon of Jupiter -- or in subsurface aquifers of Mars.

Arctic Scientists Explore a "Lost" 26-Million-Year-Old Ecosystem

“The origin of life discussion comes up because the rocks that are exposed on this very slow spreading ridge are not volcanic, but instead come directly from Earth’s mantle,” says geochemist Susan Humphris. “The chemistry is very much like the volcanism that occurred on the primordial Earth. If you are thinking about origins of life, you’d like to have an area that is the closest analog to what was happening on the early Earth.”

The Earth's 6th Great Mass Extinction is Occurring as You Read This
papananook
by papananook  7-18-2008    1
With the human population expected to reach 9-10 billion by the end of the century and the planet in the middle of its sixth mass extinction — this time due to human activity — the next few years are critical in conserving Earth’s precious biodiversity. The cause of the Sixth Extinction, Homo sapiens, means we can continue on the path to our own extinction, or, preferably, we modify our behavior toward the global ecosystem of which we are still very much a part. At a casual glance, the physically caused extinction events of the past might seem to have little or nothing to tell us about the current Sixth Extinction, which is a human-caused event. For there is little doubt that humans are the direct cause of ecosystem stress and species destruction in the modern world through transformation of the landscape, overexploitation of species, pollution, and the introduction of alien species
