Life on the edge
Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-27-2008    3
That throws up a tricky problem for engineers sending space craft to explore these alien worlds. What if the craft were to carry its own cargo of Earth microbes which set up home there? One major problem for any accidental interplanetary microbe would be how to survive the punishing radiation bombardment in space. Most would be rapidly frazzled en route. Most, but not all. Deinococcus radiodurans, nicknamed "Conan the Bacterium", is listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the "world's toughest bacterium". By rapidly replacing its DNA, it can survive cold, dehydration, vacuum, acid and a hefty radiation dose. Its Latin name means "terrifying berry that withstands radiation".

Lights Again Over Phoenix, on 11 Year Anniversary of 'Phoenix Lights'
blueridge
by blueridge  4-22-2008    2
New lights over Phoenix. Now there is reason to believe that some stealth group (even inside or independent of governments) is playing a hoax on the public, for the number 11 is a cryptic "signature" of secret society and Judeo-Masonic activity. (E.g JFK killed on 11/22; 9/11; 3/11, 7/7, 7/4/76, etc. Now this occurred Monday night about 8pm Arizona time, which was also already April 22 (4/22) in Europe. A possible premise of such deception would be, as movies have always shown of "alien invasions", to Unite the world together. Some group is building, over time, events for someone to then "connect the dots", for the world skeptically to conclude that there are aliens threatening our planet, to unite the world. (E.g Independence Day, War of the Worlds, etc.). Do recall that Orson Wells "War of the Worlds" was a radio hoax (of Martian invasion in live broadcast) that fooled and frightened millions,

The color of plants on other worlds
Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-7-2008    1
What color will alien plants be? The question matters scientifically because the surface color of a planet can reveal whether anything lives there—specifically, whether organisms collect energy from the parent star by the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is adapted to the spectrum of light that reaches organisms. This spectrum is the result of the parent star’s radiation spectrum, combined with the filtering effects of the planet’s atmosphere and, for aquatic creatures, of liquid water. Light of any color from deep violet through the near-infrared could power photosynthesis. Around stars hotter and bluer than our sun, plants would tend to absorb blue light and could look green to yellow to red. Around cooler stars such as red dwarfs, planets receive less visible light, so plants might try to absorb as much of it as possible, making them look black.<<

Are Aliens from other worlds here?
rmowery

Some part of this are interesting. In particular listen to Ronald Regan's speech to UN and what he says. It is somewhere around 22 minutes. Makes one think and also wish that an Alien race would land here and maybe help bring a stop to all the fighting on earth!

Study:Alien Worlds Have Dry Atmospheres
Sorgalim
by Sorgalim  2-21-2007
Scientists have found 213 planets outside our solar system, but only 14 have orbits that make it possible for this type of study; only eight or nine of those are close enough to see. Grillmair's team studied the closest, which goes by the catch name HD 189733b. But for the question: Where did water go?: Maybe it's hiding, scientists suggest. The water could be under dust clouds, or all the airborne water molecules have the same temperature, making it impossible to see using an infrared spectrograph. Or maybe it is just not there and astronomers have to go back to the drawing board when it comes to these alien planets. The other finding on the more distant of the two planets seems to indicate that the atmosphere is full of silicon-oxygen compounds, said study lead author L. Jeremy Richardson of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

I like job titles that make you do a double-take. I recently spotted this in the Beeb online. These types of articles are becoming more common; I can't imagine it's too long before the novelty wears off and they become ubiquitously meshed yet valuable, like what Steve Jobs thinks of Levi jeans. ;) From an insider perspective (I work for Linden Lab), I should note how dapper Roo aka Algernon looks, and how unique his head is shaped: you'll often not find prominent eyebrows like that in Second Life, especially paired with big blue eyes and a teardrop-shaped head not unlike that of a classic Gray alien. Lots of room for avatar customization, that's for sure.
