Ugandan politics and the Baganda
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  10-25-2008
Those strategies include restriction of the Kabaka’s movements within his own kingdom and the alienation of Mengo from the peasants in Buganda by protecting the peasants against eviction from the land they already occupy. Tegulle said that those incentives were being offered in exchange for promises of support to President Museveni come election time, and that since Mengo has no financial means at a time when allegiance goes to whoever brings bread to the table rather than on sentimental attachments, Museveni will sweep Buganda in the 2011 elections. The Baganda are not fools, they may accept the NRM cash and all other incentives and still vote against the party or Museveni as a person. The events that confronted Buganda after independence and the way the current leaders are conducting themselves as evidenced by the strategies Tegulle has outlined have made Baganda more united and determined to fight for their survival.

Parental Alienation Syndrome, the Other Side of the Story
Delilah1234
by Delilah1234  10-10-2008
The so-called Parental Alienation Syndrome, touted by many in the Rhode Island Family Court, has been discredited by the American Psychological Association and, recently, by both the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and the Children’s Legal Rights Journal.

Elderly gays forging new alliances
zasel
by zasel  10-6-2008    3
There are over 2.5 million gay seniors in the U.S. All of them have lived through the days when being gay meant facing discrimination, job loss, familial animosity, alienation of friends etc. But times have changed, and gay seniors have new recognition as important members of society. Sage, is a new organization, supported by AARP that helps gay seniors live the kind of lives to which they are entitled. Finally, elders who happen to be gay, can join us younger gays in taking our place in the new freedoms, being granted us in the ever expanding acceptance and tolerance of society. Things are far from perfect, but we are definitely getting there.

Diabetes, obesity, heart disease, physical weakness, osteoporosis, asthma, bodily misalignment and chronic pain... I'm fully in favor of adding depression and mental illness to the list of ways our society makes us unhealthy. The very nature of how we live is unhealthy.

Confessions of a Wi-Fi Thief
boozich
by boozich  6-19-2008
Some people thought of creative names for their networks: ParisBrooklyn, MessageInaBottle. Some were boring: linksys, NETGEAR, default. I was always happy to see the boring ones, because the people who don't bother thinking of clever names for their home networks are the same people who don't bother to password-protect them (A website called ThinkGeek.com sells a T shirt with a battery-powered wi-fi detector that displays the ambient signal strength wherever you happen to be standing. It's supercool, though if I'm too cheap to pay for broadband, I'm definitely too cheap to spend $30 on a T shirt.)

The Psychological Causes of Political Madness
willhelm
by willhelm  4-24-2008    2
it does not celebrate the ethics of consent or the blessings of voluntary cooperation. It does not advocate moral rectitude or understand the critical role of morality in human relating. The liberal agenda does not comprehend an identity of competence, appreciate its importance, or analyze the developmental conditions and social institutions that promote its achievement. The liberal agenda does not understand or recognize personal sovereignty or impose strict limits on coercion by the state. It does not celebrate the genuine altruism of private charity. It does not learn history’s lessons on the evils of collectivism. What the liberal mind is passionate about is a world filled with pity, sorrow, neediness, misfortune, poverty, suspicion, mistrust, anger, exploitation, discrimination, victimization, alienation and injustice.

Jerry Z. Muller: Is the Market Moral?
Rasmus
by Rasmus  2-4-2008    4
Jerry Z. Muller ("The Mind and the Market: Capitalism in Western Thought") is Professor of history at the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. His essay, which is overflowing with dewy-eyed praise of the morality of capitalism, ought to be noticed and needs critique. Summary: Muller discusses the moral effects of capitalism. He enumerates five positive moral effects of the market. The link between individual autonomy and self-support through legally free labor. The moral quality of self-support arises in good part from the fact that it so often extends beyond the individual, to his or her family and descendants. The market leads to a self-interested concern for others, to what one might call non-altruistic reciprocity. Capitalism creates ever wider forms of association. Capitalism creates new and more complex forms of individuality. ↗Deutsch

Humanity, Divinity, and Beauty
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  2-4-2008    18
I wonder if this striking interpretation of aesthetics (one which I find quite appealing) still holds true in the cynicism of post modernism? Although it certainly can be found to echo in Kandinsky's "Concerning the Spiritual in Art" what of the later Deconstructivists, Marxists, and other self-styled "realists" who attacked the very idea of beauty? On the other hand, it may be that in these dark times our cynicism is spent and an idealistic revival of Romanticism might rise in response to the desperation and alienation that has become almost universally felt through the deep ideological conflicts marking the beginning of the 21st Century. Another thought: does not this empowered sense of self-determination ring true with the most admirable aspects of Existentialism? ...oh, and sorry for all the alliteration. Don't know how it snuck in there! :P
