POPSWishful thinking in 2011: Google as wireless carrier? Now that the iPhone is untethered from AT&T, could it be that Google's entry into the wireless business will not be far behind. Given that such a venture is a $200 billion proposition to start afresh in this industry today, some believe that if Google is to become a player in wireless, it would be accomplished with the acquisition of an existing provider like Sprint. || http://bit.ly/gMtXa4

POPSWe’re speechless: Social Network wins 2011 Gold Globe Honors as Best Flick Funny thing: I can't recall any cinematic honors (much less the films, of course) that honored Steve Jobs or Bill Gates? Yet, Zuckerberg (played by Jesse Eisenberg) now has four Golden Globes and a host of others (http://bit.ly/egamoF) His multi-billionaire status is topping much more than the financial charts. Officially, Facebook has become the first phenomenon of the 21st Century. || http://bit.ly/fDroKS Adapted from an unauthorized book about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his personal and entrepreneurial life, "The Social Network" also took home Globes for best director ( David Fincher), screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and score (for alternative rock musicians Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross).

POPSAftermath of Tucson memorials: Can we regain our sanity? Is anyone else as disgusted as I am about the politicizing of the Tucson memorials and funerals this week? Yes, because so many government and political figures were in the spotlight because of this event, the commentary and dialog about the tragedy drones on about the political implications of the actions of a madman. But is it necessary for the pundits, commentators and would-be office holders to so heavily criticize those other officials who answered the call of duty to attend and perhaps lead the services? Says too much about man's inhumanity to others when we can't take time out for a memorial service and leave our political baggage at home.

POPSMore change (I believe) has come to the nation's capitol Probably no lone is closer to an American President on a daily basis than his chief of staff, so it is no real surprise that President Obama has tapped a fellow Chicagoan for that post and his last name is (not surprising) Daley. Two years ago, the hallmark of Obama's run for office was the chant, "Change you can believe in!" Now, the whole world knows that the most noticeable change in Washington has to do with the appointment of most key players (going and coming) in the administration who hail from Chicago and Illinois. But then, virtually everybody who takes a job in Washington has to come from somewhere else, right? Why not Chicago?

POPSCan the Republicans really change Washington? Darrell Issa is a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from California and the incoming chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. As such, he will have broad powers to investigate the workings of government. A self-made multi-millionaire, Rep. Issa is trying to bring a business-like approach to the way Washington works. But, remember, this is the guy who spearheaded and funded the recall campaign seven years ago that ousted then California Governor Gray Davis, who was replaced by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and we all know how that turned out. Like most businessmen who are sent to Washington, Issa is a breed of politicians with high ideals, but we will see if those ideals are marked with effective results now that he has the legislative powers that he and his fellow Republicans now hold. || http://bit.ly/gsSJvk

POPSEconomics, the federal deficit point to certain contractions in Medicare
A 2009 report by the New England Journal of Medicine offered this: "Fifteen percent of Medicare spent to prolong last 60 days of life." More than a year later, is this total higher or lower? Certainly, higher, and still growing if you follow the reasoning behind this attached clip. What got me started exploring this topic was an e-mail link in my in box today, an item written by Chuck Colson: "During the debate over health care reform, one of the most controversial proposals was for the government to pay for consultations regarding end-of-life treatment. 'The tag 'death panels' stuck to the proposal like white on rice, and the administration had to drop the idea from the final bill. "But on December 3rd (2010), apparently under cover of darkness, the Obama administration issued a new Medicare regulation that implemented what Congress and the American people explicitly rejected. It authorizes Medicare to pay doctors for “end-of-life-care counseling” during patients’ an

POPSMedical research promises new method for early detection of cancer Stray cancer cells in the blood mean that a tumor has spread or is likely to, many doctors believe. A test that can capture such cells has the potential to transform care for many types of cancer, especially breast, prostate, colon and lung. POPSThanks to the web, YouTube, and blogs, many of the prized gaffes of 2010 are archived for posterity SLATE.com makes a selection of gaffes from the 2010 campaign that we should forgive ... According to this SOURCE (David Weigel of SLATE.com), The 2010 midterms marked the final handover of political news judgment from the professionals to the amateurs and operatives. Consider: Four years ago, when then-Sen. George Allen of Virginia, then running for re-election, called a Democratic video tracker "Macaca," you could not see the video on your phone. You couldn't tweet it. It was largely up to news organizations whether they covered the video, which is why conservatives blamed the Washington Post for blowing it up into a scandal by covering every angle of the incident." Now, the times have changed and the web virtually captures life for real (and unreal) every moment of every day.

POPSAny significance to Oprah starting new network on 1-1-11? When Oprah made the TV announcement about the launch date for her new network she yelled and made a big emphasis, saying she would start on "1-1-1-1!" Oprah Winfrey is obviously knowledgeable and passionate about the symbolism. Oprah has been a part of raising spiritual consciousness globally and the date 1/1/11 is thought to mark yet another universal shift in consciousness in order to prepare the world for the end of the Mayan calendar which comes at the end of 2011 at 11:11 a.m. during the winter solstice GMT time. || http://bit.ly/fKzDeK

POPSTry not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value. ~ Albert Einstein By the time you read this, all of the Christmas gifts for 2010 have been opened and most of us a trying to shake the post-Christmas blues. But what has happened to Santa Claus? This analysis (long on the web and in print) provides one perspective that you don't want the kids to read: "Not that it matters, however, since Santa, as a result of accelerating from a dead stop to 650 m.p.s. in .001 seconds, would be subjected to centrifugal forces of 17,500 g's. A 250 pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of the sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force, instantly crushing his bones and organs and reducing him to a quivering blob of pink goo. "Therefore, if Santa did exist, he's dead now." ... READ MORE below}

POPSWill the NFL ever return to Los Angeles? While the NFL is nearing the end of another season this week of Christmas, there is still no gift for the pro football fans of Los Angeles, now ending a 16th season without a local team.
