Writers really spoof it up. but wouldn't it cool if this was true?
Packrat61
by Packrat61  11-12-2008
Hundreds of independent writers, artists, and activists are claiming credit for an elaborate project, 6 months in the making, in which 1.2 million copies of a "special edition" of the New York Times were distributed in cities across the U.S. by thousands of volunteers. The papers, dated July 4th of next year, were headlined with long-awaited news: "IRAQ WAR ENDS". The edition, which bears the same look and feel as the real deal, includes stories describing what the future could hold: national health care, the abolition of corporate lobbying, a maximum wage for CEOs, etc. There was also a spoof site, at http://www.nytimes-se.com/.

McCain’s Infomercial Sells Jewelry
reimers
by reimers  11-2-2008    1
McCain was very amusing but seemed to be throwing in the towel. It wasn't the type of appearance I'd expect from a guy who thinks he's going to be president-elect in a few days.

WEbook
akipta
by akipta  10-19-2008
WEbook is a revolutionary online book publishing company, which does for the industry what American Idol did for music. (Modestly speaking, of course.) Welcome to the home of groundbreaking User-Generated Books. WEbook is the vision of a few occasionally erudite people who believe there are millions of talented writers whose work is ignored by the staid and exclusive world of book publishing. It just makes logical sense that if you create a dynamic, irreverent, and open place for writers and people who like reading to meet, write, react, and think together, the results are bound to be extraordinary. Cue WEbook.com, an online publishing platform that allows writers, editors, reviewers, illustrators and others to join forces to create great works of fiction and non-fiction, thrillers and essays, short stories, children's books and more.

Failed Gods
dulios
by dulios  10-15-2008    1
No wonder we've seen a disoriented John McCain wandering the moors howling about Bill Ayers. What's he supposed to do? Admit that the Reagan-Thatcher faith in unregulated capitalism, to which every GOP presidential candidate was pledging allegiance just last winter, has collapsed? The doctrine of laissez faire has been so dominant, so pervasive over the past three decades that hundreds of Democratic politicians can deliver a paean to the market at the drop of a hat, but not a single Republican pol can plausibly defend government as a check on capitalism run amok, even at the drop of thousands of points in the Dow.

Nobel Judge tells American writers "You Are Too Ignorant"
spirithiker

Wow, what a slap in the face. Responses range from accusing Horace Engdahl, the permanent secretary of the Nobel prize jury, of not reading enough American literature to just trying to generate publicity. The last American to win a prize for literature was Toni Morrison in 1993.

Sarah Palin's Punch lines full of hot air and lies
NonStatQuo
by NonStatQuo  9-4-2008
Quote: "That qualifies her to have her hand on the tiller of American foreign policy in the event that, God forbid, something happens to John McCain? To suggest that is frightening. Really – what if something happens to John McCain. What relevant experience does Sarah Palin have, to be able to sit across the conference table, with negotiators, with the prime ministers and presidents of this world?" the congresswoman said. "As the McCain campaign constantly reminds us, this is a dangerous world."

7 Writing Habits of Amazing Writers
Aribeth
by Aribeth  9-3-2008    2
This extremely prolific writer has won numerous awards, including the National Book Award. She writes in longhand, and while she doesn’t have a formal schedule, she says she prefers to write in the morning, before breakfast . She’s a creative writing professor, and on the days she teaches, she says she writes for an hour or 45 minutes before leaving for her first class. On other days, when the writing is going well, she can work for hours without a break — and has breakfast at 2 or 3 in the afternoon!

"You Furnish the Pictures and I'll Furnish the War"
sahara
by sahara  8-14-2008    2
Both repeatedly called for armed intervention, then later, all-out war. The atrocities General Weyler committed in Cuba were massively hyped and sensationalized in the US newspapers, then engaged in a practice known as "yellow journalism". The two kingpins of the press at the time were William R. Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, who were embroiled in a vicious circulation war, in which Hearst even "stole" Pulitzer's most popular writers by convincing them to defect through promises of money and positions. Hearst's major publication was the New York Journal and Pulitzer's publication was the New York World. In order to grow their circulations, both men were willing to go so far as to make up stories. The Spanish-American War was not the height of Hearst's power. Afterwards, he continued to grow his media empire for several decades, and even successfully ran for a seat in Congress. Hearst was the rough basis for the wealthy journalist-baron in Orson Welles' Citizen Kane.

This War Report Has Been Approved By Your Government
debbyski
by debbyski  8-12-2008    13
"Apparently, in the view of our corporate news editors and managers, it is important for Americans to fully witness the bloody horrors of war when that war is being fought by Russia, but we are to be carefully protected from seeing such things when they are being perpetrated by our own centurions. We aren’t even allowed to see the grievous injuries and death being suffered by our own troops. And, of course, don't feel to good about the quality of the coverage of the Russian/Georgia conflict either. This too is biased. Indeed one reason we are shown all the carnage is that the US government has been backing Georgia, and there is evidence that the US even encouraged the Georgian attacks on ethnic Russians which provoked the invasion. The US also has obligingly airlifted Georgian troops back from Iraq to Georgia. This is not news. This is propaganda, pure and simple. "

Travel Writing, Courtesy of Uncle Sam
Elisabeth Eaves
by Elisabeth Eaves  7-15-2008
I knew that Roosevelt's New Deal created government jobs for blue collar workers. But who knew that travel writers also benefited -- including the likes of Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Eudora Welty? My capitalist tendencies notwithstanding, I can't help but be charmed by writer-employment schemes. Doubly charming (to me anyway): This piece is about my former home state of Washington.

The Masons and the Moors
nubianImhotep
by nubianImhotep  5-18-2008
The Masons and the Moors BY MEHMET SABEHEDDIN The origins of Freemasonry – as would be expected of such a "venerable secret society" – are shrouded in myth, legend and almost impenetrable obscurity. Since at least the late 18th century Masonic writers have sought to establish a link between the Knights Templar and the Freemasons. Freemasonic lore and symbols have been traced to ancient Egypt and Phoenicia. Yet, despite all the books and articles exploring Freemasonry published over the last hundred years, there is one area that has not received attention. It concerns Freemasonry's debt to Islamic mysticism and a shadowy tradition connecting the Masons with the Moors of North Africa. Moorish Science The involvement of Freemasons in the establishment of the United States of America is well documented. In fact Masons featured so prominently in drafting the American Declaration of Independence that many people believed it a thoroughly `Masonic project'. Not only Georg

The RAND Corporation - A litany of horrors
kenstipe
by kenstipe  5-1-2008
The RAND Corporation was the ur-think tank, the Cold War granddaddy of them all, and it's still with us. In the 1950s, nuclear war-gaming a conflagration for which the usual war games would have been ludicrous, it took the U.S. military into virtuality and science fiction long before there was an Internet to play with. (And it had a hand in creating the Internet, too!) In the 1960s, it helped several administrations plan and fight the Vietnam War, making antiseptic theory into an all-too-grim reality. And that's just the beginning of the work RAND did on a range of hot-button imperial issues.

Top 25 Guitar Riffs 1-13
mickfinn
by mickfinn  4-8-2008    1
Just seven songs penned in the last two decades have made it on to a list of the greatest guitar riffs of all time. British rock band Deep Purple top the list with their 1973 hit Smoke on the Water. Among the more recent riffs is Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit (1991), in second place, and Wake Up by Rage Against the Machine (1992) in 16th. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers have two entries, Under The Bridge (1992) at 9 and Give it Away (1991) at 21. However, not one song written since 2003 made the short list. Songs by American writers claimed the majority of places in the top 25, but seven of the songs on the list were written by British artists.
