POPSFarewell to Coney Island's Astroland Coney Island's Astroland, one of the city's historic (and affordable) attractions, was shut down yesterday. It meant different things to different people and this story brings that out well.

POPSA Painkiller With Big Risks In my line of work, I see many people addicted to methadone and I must confess that it is simply shocking to me that doctors addict these people so lightly. I don't mean to make light of the personal responsibility of the patient, but it just boggles my mind and it is so sad; sad beyond belief. I see 40 year olds that I know won't live another 10 years.

POPSThe Seven Sweetest Fictional Theme Parks Pt 1 (#7 - #5) Cartmanland, Horrorland from Goosebumps, and the Granddaddy of all fictional theme parks: Westworld! Part 2 gets better with Wally World, Thrill World, Itchy and Scratchy Land, and I am not going to tell you what Number One is.... Not even a hint.... I personally love theme parks and have been to some of the best: Disneyland, Six Flags, Magic Mountain, Knott's Berry Farm, Raging Waters, California Adventure, Busch Gardens, Universal Studios California, Palisades Park, and Astroworld... and the biggest of them all - Las Vegas! But if you like sci-fi or adventure thrillers pick up Dream Park by Larry Niven and Steven Barnes (or the 4 or so sequels), Utopia by Lincoln Childs, or Futureworld by Phillip J. Farmer. You will love them!

POPS"Disneyland" Comes to Baghdad Part of Reconstruction is distraction. It has worked well in the U.S. since the Civil War. It seems real insulting to the average Iraqi that there is "a shortage of entertainment" when they are struggling more for clean water, proper sewage, food, and infrastructure that has been destroyed by the U.S. invasion.

POPSZapa - cement company with a soft corner for kids One of the many amusement-park-like cement works of Zapa Company, in the Czech Republic. It has managed to become not only one of the most successful eco-friendly companies, but also endeared itself with children....not an easy task for such an industry!

POPSScriptures are now an amusement park attraction How sad it is to once again see the sacred word of God being depicted as an amusement park attraction. Once was not enough now apparently it is fashionable to create amusement parks in the name of Christianity. I guess this really should not be so surprising considering a good bit of televised religion is nothing more then infomercials and religious entertainment anyway. Perhaps the churches should start charging admission to get inside to witness the great adventures of God up close and personal. Why not just turn the church houses into museums or tourist attractions?

POPSThe World According to Howard Beale I was looking for the "Mad as Hell" scene in Network. I thought it might be on google or youtube. It was all I could remember from the move. When I looked I found I had forgotten a lot, including the last scene.(I won't spoil the surprise if you haven't seen it) The whole video goes for 35 minutes, but it is also broken into four sections. I had also forgotten that Peter Finch is the only person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor posthumously, for his role in Network. Much of what Howard Beale says has more relevance today. He died over Thirty years ago and things have just gotten worse

POPSAshes to Ashes, at Disneyland There is also a survey with this article: "For amusement, where would you park your remains?" Disneyland comes in with 64%, Sea World at 14%, Six Flags Magic Mountain at 10%, Knott's Berry Farm and Universal Studios come in at 6.5% and 5% respectively. Big the big question is -- where in Disneyland would you like to remain? The article cites Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion. You'll need to choose a classic spot that isn't likely to be redesigned or removed. Choose wisely.....
