The Purple People of Phoenicia
alanocu
by alanocu  5-23-2008    12
"The fast, non-fading dye was an item of luxury trade. It is believed that the intensity of the purple hue improved, rather than faded, as the dyed cloth aged." "Archaeological data from Tyre indicate that the snails were collected in large vats and left to decompose. This produced a hideous stench that was actually mentioned by ancient authors. Not much is known about the subsequent steps, and the actual ancient method for mass-producing the two murex dyes has not yet been successfully reconstructed; this special "blackish clotted blood" colour, which was prized above all others, is believed to be achieved by double-dipping the cloth, once in the indigo dye of H. trunculus and once in the purple-red dye of M. brandaris." The Phoenician dolls are unrelated to Tyrian purple, I thought it was an interesting addition to the clip.

The Masons and the Moors
nubianImhotep
by nubianImhotep  5-18-2008
The Masons and the Moors BY MEHMET SABEHEDDIN The origins of Freemasonry – as would be expected of such a "venerable secret society" – are shrouded in myth, legend and almost impenetrable obscurity. Since at least the late 18th century Masonic writers have sought to establish a link between the Knights Templar and the Freemasons. Freemasonic lore and symbols have been traced to ancient Egypt and Phoenicia. Yet, despite all the books and articles exploring Freemasonry published over the last hundred years, there is one area that has not received attention. It concerns Freemasonry's debt to Islamic mysticism and a shadowy tradition connecting the Masons with the Moors of North Africa. Moorish Science The involvement of Freemasons in the establishment of the United States of America is well documented. In fact Masons featured so prominently in drafting the American Declaration of Independence that many people believed it a thoroughly `Masonic project'. Not only Georg

The Ins and Outs of Shaving Your Pubes
zizzy
by zizzy  5-6-2008    1
I've been wondering why Botticelli's Venus and the Odalisque's (among other famous nudes) were painted without body hair. I thought that with body hair these paintings would be more like raunchy porn than art, (although porn can be art). Europeans would have learned about body hair removal - the importance of hygiene from Africans and Arabs. http://www.orientalist-art.org.uk/odalisque.html I guess I should have asked during one of the many art history courses that I took ... but instead I learned the answer from Fox News. LOL

Sun dog -nature
dakotayii
by dakotayii  5-4-2008    2
A sun dog or sundog (scientific name parhelion, plural parhelia, for "beside the sun") is a common bright circular spot on a solar halo. It is an atmospheric optical phenomenon primarily associated with the reflection or refraction of sunlight by small ice crystals making up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. Often, two sun dogs can be seen (one on each side of the sun) simultaneously.

Does it Undo the Christian and Muslims, too?
righthand
by righthand  5-2-2008    5
If it proves that the Exodus is a MYTH then so is the bible. Then so is Christianity and the Muslim faith. And they all know it. Now its not about faith. It's about hoax!!! They should be in court as crooks but the courts too have their vested interest. Think of it as proving to children that there is a Father Christmas. Ok, no one is defrauded or cheated like these religions founded on myth not faith. And all this knowledge arose from attempting to prove that the European Jews had some right to the land of Israel. No matter how creative they have been, all their archaeology efforts have proven is the opposite to their theory. The Zionist have succeeded in one thing. Bringing archaeology into disrepute! And religion!

Pyramids packed with fossil shells.
pokkets
by pokkets  4-28-2008    2
They say that seashells prove that the rock was quarried, instead of cast in moulds. I can't imagine how making their own 10 tonne bricks in moulds would have made things any easier. Maybe just adding another stage to a process that was already a huge undertaking. I also heard once that after something is build it hasto 'settle' into into it's foundations, Very few builders or architects have been able to find a way to overcome this, but with their weight, and perfect seams with no mortar, the pyramids have only settled a fraction - perhaps a few inches, over thousands of years. Something that seems much more likely with solid rock than bricks. If only the library in Alexandria hadn't burned down with all of the blueprints.

Carter's Hamas Talks Could Aid Exodus to Peace
papananook
by papananook  4-22-2008    2
In a larger sense, the view of Hamas as a party so evil that no one may even talk with it keeps many Jews in a state of spiritual slavery. It reinforces their long-standing habit of defining Jewish identity primarily in terms of radical vulnerability, as if the only meaningful way to be Jewish were to stand firm against an enemy and always be ready to shoot at that enemy. This slavery is especially tragic because it is self-imposed. It arises not from objective perception of facts imposed from outside, but from choices that Jews themselves make, choices that Jimmy Carter calls them to reconsider. So this Baptist leader, more than anyone else, can now claim the title of a modern-day Moses, willing to lead the Jews from slavery to freedom. Carter stands as a fine example of what the ancient rabbis called "a righteous gentile." A growing number of Jews, in Israel and the U.S., publicly agree with Carter that Israel must reach a peace agreement with a Palestinian government represent

Discovery and Restoration at Egypt's Colossi of Memnon
madame travels
by madame travels  4-20-2008
It is planned that five years from now the statues of Sekhmet the lion-headed goddess will stand again. When the two 15-metre red quartz colossi of Amenhotep become upright again in 2009 Tiya's statue will once again stand next to those of her spouse. The two other giant statues that have been uncovered are not yet ready to reclaim their place alongside the others, however. They are made of alabaster and extremely rare because of the material's fragility. Unlike other neighbouring funerary temples such as the Ramasseum, dedicated to Ramses II, and Ramses III's temple at Medinat Habu, "we will be able to admire the temple's content, not only its skeleton," said Sourouzian.

2300 Year Old Model Airplane
Rustee
by Rustee  4-10-2008
Did anyone actually build a large version of this thing? Well, no one could have come this close to the real shape of flight without working on a larger scale. This little wooden model could hardly exist unless someone had worked with large, light models, or even with man-carrying versions. Archaeologists have looked in vain for a prototype. A large model light enough to fly would be too delicate to stand the ravages of 2300 years. The original -- if it ever was -- has long since joined the desert dust. Whatever form this Egyptian airplane might have taken, it has long since returned to the world of dreams and imagination from which it first came.

The Colors of Ancient Egypt
alanocu
by alanocu  4-8-2008    6
"Paintings, clothing, books, jewelry, and architecture were all imbued with colorful symbolism. African historian Alistair Boddy-Evans explains that color “was considered an integral part of an item’s or person’s nature in Ancient Egypt, and the term could interchangeably mean color, appearance, character, being, or nature. Items with similar color were believed to have similar properties.”

Ancient Egyptians did it tough
pokkets
by pokkets  3-31-2008
The paintings and etchings on the tombs, and walls, were requested by the nobility, so their story was told, There were far many more average people, as there are today, who made up the bulk of the population, whose names are not recorded, but helped build the city, and tell the story of the country. The evidence is just harder to find.
