The "Bear" Has Raised It's Head On Emerging Markets
merrie
by merrie  9-12-2008
The slowdown in the global economy may have hit the US early. It has begun to spread abroad as real estate prices and export rates in nations include China fall into decline. While America has been early into a recession it may be early in an exit. If the housing market here is at the foundation of trouble in global markets, the benefit of any improvement in the situation should have its first impression here. For the last several years, what was good for China, Russia, and other markets still in early stages was bad for the US. There are only so many opportunities to go around. The screw has turned and the US markets are the most likely beneficiary.

The Gray Scale between East and West
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  9-7-2008    5
Understanding that there is no clear distinction between east and west is one of the most important changes we need to make in 21st century diplomacy. Failing to see east and west as a cultural continuum with significant commonalities across the board is one of the main reasons for the rise of terrorism and our failed Russia policy. Clinging to old nationalist divisions blinds us to what the world has become and what the world has always been: cultures in flux across borders and mutating as different people interact.

Eclipse-Watchers Worldwide Gear Up For Friday's Event
merrie
by merrie  8-1-2008
Before there was a scientific explanation for eclipses, myth and mystery was pervasive. Many cultures thought a demon or dragon was devouring the sun. In ancient China, "any unusual phenomenon involving celestial bodies was noted for potential omens, either good or bad, that might befall the current Emperor," according to Sten Odenwald of the department of physics at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. The ancient Chinese banged pots and drums to shoo the frightful sun-eating character away. In India, people would immerse themselves in water to help the sun fight the dragon. Even nowadays many myths persist. In Egypt, as one example, children are often kept indoors with windows covered or shades drawn during an eclipse. Risk of eye injury Eclipses can indeed be dangerous

More from the site: "This is not a strictly accurate historical portrayal of events, but a poetic, fantastic interpretation of the original text," says Grant Morrison. "The world of MBX is a place of incredible art and technology. This kingdom of sages, warriors, noble men and women is stronger, faster, fitter and smarter than we are, but still prey to the same emotional foibles that lead us all into disaster."

The Animals Lawsuit Against Humanity
arifsali
by arifsali  4-8-2008    1
Within the tenets of Islam are found strong support and guidelines for the protection and treatment of animals. In the Qur'an and Hadith (sayings of the Prophet), it is emphasized that animals be treated as humanely as any other of God's vast creation. The Qur'an goes as far to say that cruelty to animals is equivalent to cruel treatment of a human being. Kind treatment of animals is considered a good deed in the same sense that good conduct and treatment between human beings is deemed a good deed.

March of Democracy - Government by the People across History - 4,000 years in 90 seconds [FLASH]
Rasmus
by Rasmus  2-29-2008    1
This is simplification as usual: "The Republic of Rome - First Democratic World Power"; Manifest Destiny as an expansion of democracy. Which people ruled? Which peoples were oppressed by that people? Can anybody glorify a political system as democratic when peoples are oppressed by it? Can a world power be democratic at all? What, for instance, about the "democratic" attitude of the United Kingdom when the queen/king was Empress/Emperor of India? Which is the value of democracy if the demos fancies themselves the chosen people to subjugate and to prey other peoples? Conclusion: Democracy is not enough. There must be cosmopolitan morality to make it a valuable political system.

5500-year-old Plaza found in Peru
invictus
by invictus  2-26-2008
Discovery of Caral (dated to 3000 BCE) was a shock for established archaeology, who rejected the existence of an ancient civilization in south America, prior to 1200 BCE. Now the discovery of Sechin Bajo appears to be a second shock, which pulls the date back to 3500 BCE. These two findings alone, show that Peru hosted an important, unknown civilization, 400 years before the Egyptian kingdom was founded by Menes and at least 250 years before the Sumerians took control of southern Mesopotamia. Amazing discoveries forces historians to reconsider their established "ancient history" cliches.
