POPSAncient Hebrew Cosmology
Ancient Hebrew cosmology as illustrated by Michæl.Paukner: The preceding description of the world doesn't share the same scientific view that we have, in which the Earth is one planet around one sun in a universe full of suns and planets. The ancient picture of the universe portrays a world in which the Earth is a disc surrounded by water not only on the sides, but underneath and above as well. A firm bowl (the firmament) keeps the upper waters back but has gates to let the rain and snow through. The Sun, Moon, and stars move in fixed tracks along the underside of this bowl. From below the disc, the waters break through as wells, rivers and the ocean, but the Earth stands firm on pillars sunk into the waters like the pillings of a pier. Deep below the Earth is Sheol, the abode of the dead, which can be entered only through the grave. As portrayed in the illustration, the biblical cosmos consisted of three basic regions: the heavens, the land, and the underworld. In conclusion

POPSFulgurites - Fossilized Lightening "Archaeologists working near Corrie Village on the cost of Scotland’s Isle of Arrran in 1966 made an astonishing discovery: a fossilized fulgurite! Judging from the age and nature of the surrounding sandstone, the lightning strike which created the fossil fulgurite occurred some 250 million years ago at the end of the Permian Period. Though our planet has changed much since that ancient era before the dinosaurs even appeared, the fundamental physical processes that drive the hydrological cycle, including lightning, obviously have not..." POPSThe Celtic Zodiac: The Origin of Halloween
Notes from the artist: The Ancient Origins of Halloween In today's world it is often difficult for us to imagine that there were ancient civilizations that came long before us, who were more aware and in tune with nature, astronomy and astrology than we are today with all of our advanced knowledge and technology. Approximately one thousand years B.C., a religious order of Celtic priests known as the Druids lived in the British Isles. They used a lunar calendar that consisted of 13 months, with each month having within it 28 days, plus an additional day which was added to the calendar as in a leap year, to correspond to the solar/lunar year. This 13 month calendar was used by the Druids to calculate their year and important festivals. The Druidic religion focused on the natural and supernatural energies of the universe which they identified with the spirits of their sacred trees. These sacred trees formed the basis of the Druid astrological zodiac.

POPSHiking Into History: England’s Ancient Ridgeway Trail More: The full 87 miles of the official Ridgeway National Trail can easily be divided into shorter segments, depending on time available. It can be cut more or less in half, by deciding to walk only the older, original western section, which passes all the great prehistoric sites. Day hikes, and half-days centered on the Uffington White Horse, or Wayland’s Smithy, or the Avebury Stone Circles, can easily be devised by studying the map. The trail’s excellent Web site (www.nationaltrail.co.uk/ridgeway) is full of advice, and possibilities for accommodations and meals.

POPSWorld's oldest human-linked skeleton’s found ‘Ardi’ predates Lucy by a million years, changes scientific view of origins WASHINGTON - The story of humankind is reaching back another million years with the discovery of “Ardi,” a hominid who lived 4.4 million years ago in what is now Ethiopia. The 110-pound, 4-foot female roamed forests a million years before the famous Lucy, long studied as the earliest skeleton of a human ancestor. This older skeleton reverses the common wisdom of human evolution, said anthropologist C. Owen Lovejoy of Kent State University.

POPSChannels associated with impact craters discovered on Mars If a significant amount of water was released or mobilized by the formation of the Hale Crater impact, larger impacts that formed during the early days of the Solar System may have been able to bring even more water to the surface of Mars. If this is true, a long-term, stable, warm and wet climate may not be required to explain the presence of such channels in the ancient Martian landscapes.

POPSCapitan Reef Over millions of years, segments of the Capitan Reef were uplifted, and much of the sediment was eroded away from the more resistant limestone reef materials. The Guadalupe Mountains, stretching to the northeast from El Capitan in Texas to near Carlsbad, New Mexico, are one of these uplifted portions of the reef. The southern end of the range is included within Guadalupe Mountains National Park. As this uplift continued, groundwater that supported some of the material in many of the caverns drained away, and material collapsed to form large underground chambers, such as those in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Because the reef was built, in large part, through the accumulation of dead marine organisms that incorporated calcium carbonate into their structures, fossils are abundant in the reef deposits throughout the exposed portions of the Guadalupe Mountains.

POPS'The slap heard around the web' Communications technologies are now delivering unprecedented volumes of information. This story clearly shows that this "information" can be used in powerful ways. Used properly, it may just be possible to improve societies by publicizing unacceptable behavior that was previously "secret". One obvious issue is "transparency" versus "privacy".
