Shhhh! Census Worker May Have Committed Suicide
ColoradoRight
by ColoradoRight  11-6-2009    2
  * The Democratic Underground quickly posted a ‘Handy Guide to how Republicans and Fox News are responsible for Census worker being hanged'. * Rachel Maddow suggested Sparkman was killed simply because ‘he was a federal employee'. * Time chalked it up to government distrust, a sentiment fanned by ‘talk media, tea parties and white-hot town-hall meetings'. * The Huffington Post immediately assumed this was a case of right-wing paranoia. * True/Slant opined that the body of Sparkman should be shipped to Glenn Beck. * Think Progress pointed the finger at Michelle Bachman and her ‘inflammatory and fear-mongering rhetoric against the Census'. * New York Magazine linked the death to that of ‘some wide-eyed, hysterical woman' named Michelle Bachman. (The irony in this is that the reference to a wide-eyed, hysterical woman was made in an article mentioning Nancy Pelosi).

Tea Party Movement's New Target :The GOP

They feel they were had by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), who urged them to stomach earmarks for the good of the party; by George W. Bush adviser Karl Rove, who urged them to stomach a massive expansion of education and Medicare for the good of the party; and by the rest of the Washington gang that collaborated in the largest expansion of government in their lifetime for the good of the party. Erick Erickson, founder and editor of the conservative RedState blog, said grass-roots activists are done listening. “Republicans are going to have to come our way,” he said, before going on to trash NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions and Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele for backing Scozzafava. Their “level of disingenuousness ... is disgusting,” Erickson said. His influential blog is now calling for Sessions to get the boot from the NRCC as a penalty for mishandling the race. Erickson’s bombast may seem overboard, but it captures the dep

I've been betrayed by this Government, says Iraq War hero who won George Cross
foxyarse
by foxyarse  11-1-2009
He said that when he received his George Cross, ‘the Queen told me she had not presented a GC for “such a long time” and that it was “a privilege” to give it to me’. Now 25, he tells the MAIL ON SUNDAY with typical bravery how his pride was soon eclipsed by anger at the Government's mistreatment of the Armed Forces and why he took the drastic step of quitting army life earlier this year... Slasher Politics
merrie
by merrie  10-25-2009
Per Jigsaw’s instructions, turncoat Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) shepherds the insurance company nitwits to their demise. No reason why the ”Saw” franchise shouldn’t jump on the pop-culture Obama cheerleading train like everyone else in La-la with a little B-flick health-care advocacy. And with the loan officer thing, there’s something for everyone! One thing slasher fans may want to bear in mind, though. When your gaping, bloody saw wounds need to be stitched and stapled up, do you really want to wait in line for the lowest bidder? Boston Herald’s Tenley Woodman gives Saw VI a “D.” No, not for the feel-good politics embedded in the middle of a feel-bad extravaganza. … it is the depraved acts and gore that make these films objectionable. Hate to quibble, but I think that’s what makes them marketable.

Random Thoughts
ljsdesign

One good turn gets most of the blankets. There are two kinds of pedestrians -- the quick and the dead. If quitters never win, and winners never cheat, then who is the fool who said "Quit while you're ahead"? Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. Second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience. I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. What happens if you get scared half to death twice? Multitasking: Screwing up several things at once. Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

Army chiefs accuse extremists of exploiting Britain's servicemen
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-20-2009
The values of these extremists - many of whom are essentially racist - are fundamentally at odds with the values of the modern British military, such as tolerance and fairness.' The new row came as an apparent list of the party's members and their personal details were posted on the internet, in the third leak of its membership in recent years. The names include former senior members of the military, doctors and professors, according to the spreadsheet posted on the the WikiLeaks website. Everything from their street address, post code, telephone number and mobile phone number is included. It comes amid huge anger over BNP leader Nick Griffin's appearance on Question Time on Thursday with the corporation refusing to pull him from the line-up. The BNP has regularly used pictures of soldiers as part of its campaign, alongside quintessentially British images such as Winston Churchill's V for victory sign.

The Neuroscience of Sin! Why do we do it?
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  10-17-2009
Reading this article made me think of the proverbial "chicken and the egg." The article suggests that we sin because our brains are evolutionarily designed to do so. This leaves us to conclude that you cannot manage sin as it is hardwired in. I don't agree with that. I think sin is the chicken! The article does a great job of illustrating how various emotions and motives play out in the brain not the other way around. The good news is the very last paragraph. Read it for yourself...enjoy!

Three 9/11 Heroes Die of Cancer in 5 Days
sahara
by sahara  10-15-2009    1
If passed, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act would provide $10 billion for medical care for hundreds of first responders who have since become ill, although officially the illnesses have never been linked to the World Trade Center collapse. The act is named after a New York City Police Department detective who died from his post-9/11 ailments. “Unfortunately, it’s just going to happen more and more…I hope next week there isn’t four,” regretted Stephen Grossman. To better illustrate the pattern, the newspaper noted that firefighter John McNamara, also 44, had died of cancer last month. “These three deaths are proof that we need this bill passed today $#0151; not a year from now,” said John Feal, founder of the FealGood Foundation. “How do you get this high cluster of serious cancer in just people that worked the pile?” he said. “That isn’t a coincidence.”

If God Had Wanted Me To Be Accepting Of Gays
Socratoad
by Socratoad  10-15-2009    13
Here, let's start with the basic facts: I hate and fear gay people. The way they feel is different from how I feel, and that causes me a lot of confusion and anger. Everyone knows God is all-powerful. He could easily have given me the capacity to investigate what's behind those feelings rather than tell strangers in the park they're going to hell for holding hands. But God clearly has another path for me. And who am I to question His divine will? Compassion, tolerance, understanding, basic decency, the ability to put myself in another person's position: God could have endowed me with any of those traits and yet—here is the crucial part—He didn't. Why? Because the Creator of the Universe wants me to demonize homosexuals in an effort to strip them of their fundamental human rights.

Report: smoking bans protect nonsmokers from heart attacks
Lexica
by Lexica  10-15-2009
More: While heavier exposure to secondhand smoke is worse, there's no safe level…even less than an hour's exposure might be enough to push someone already at risk of a heart attack over the edge. That's because within minutes, the smoke's pollution-like small particles and other substances can start constricting blood vessels and increasing blood's propensity to clot — key heart attack factors. Yet many people don't know they have heart disease until their first heart attack, making it important for everyone to avoid secondhand smoke, Benowitz said. "Even if you think you're perfectly healthy, secondhand smoke could be a potential threat to you," he said. Many of the IOM committee members initially were skeptical they'd find much benefit from the bans, said statistician Stephen Feinberg of Carnegie Mellon University. He proclaimed himself "the resident skeptic" who changed his mind. "There was a clear and consistent effect of smoking bans," he said.
