Weapons of mass destruction.
aklimento
by aklimento  10-30-2008
to make them appear higher in protein I don't want my food "appear high" in anything! I want it tasty and I don't want feel myself like shit after consuming it. May be I want too much, but that is it. I asking food experts: Do you know what is a chronic poisoning, when you have virtually no chance to avoid your chunk of targeted "magic bullet" from food producers, manufacturers, packagers and repackagers? How laboratory analyzes become main sign of food quality?

The report called on the Fish and Wildlife Service, which oversees the recovery program, to "increase the visibility of its leadership."

The Case Against Meat
jklugman
by jklugman  7-5-2008    3
Animals also need land. Even if they're penned up in industrial agriculture settings. And it turns out they need a lot more of it than do most crops. The following graph (which comes from this pdf) tracks usable protein yield per acre for a host of foods. Meat doesn't fare well:

We Need to Protect More Land, Not Less
Socratoad
by Socratoad  7-4-2008    1
There are few better investments of taxpayer dollars than the land reserve project, which has protected millions of acres of sensitive lands nationwide and significantly reduced soil erosion, all the while costing taxpayers about one tenth as much as traditional farm subsidies. And unlike most farm subsidies — which concentrate wealth in the hands of the wealthy — this program spreads the money around and creates more economic value than it costs.

Tremendous Range Of Unintended Consequences
merrie
by merrie  6-21-2008    2
On the losing side of the equation have been cattle, hog and chicken producers, as well as consumers. The government’s latest projection, released Friday, is that food prices this year will rise as much as 5.5 percent. Some products, including cereals and eggs, are expected to rise about 10 percent. The idea of easing ethanol mandates, while it would also lower the price of corn, is contentious. Keith Collins, the former Agriculture Department chief economist, will release a study on Monday saying that as much as half of the sharp increase in corn prices over the last few years is due to the demands of ethanol production. “We’ve seen a tremendous range of unintended consequences” from the requirement that increasing amounts of ethanol be blended into gasoline. The White House will be forced to confront the ethanol issue next month. States are allowed to asked for waivers of the mandate for corn ethanol on the ground that it is harming the economy or the environment.

Australian 'cowcam'
Yassin_M
by Yassin_M  6-13-2008
When animals come to feed or drink they will be forced to pass through a laneway where the camera has been installed. "You could have a cattle station that has feral populations of horses, donkeys or camels. The watering points are there for the cattle, so the camera would let the cattle through, but if a goat or a pig tried to get in the gate would shut against it," he said. The new technology has been developed over the past four years and is now on sale in Australia for $10,000 (£4,802). For
