POPSBush urges expanded drilling of Alaskan wildlife New tech allows boring through bull-walrus midsections. Conservatives rage against saying anything funny about not drilling in ANWR, citing apocalyptic destruction of American values. Urge technology tax credits for development of higher petroleum use. "Americans should be able to bathe themselves in light sweet crude."

POPSThe Case Against Meat Animals also need land. Even if they're penned up in industrial agriculture settings. And it turns out they need a lot more of it than do most crops. The following graph (which comes from this pdf) tracks usable protein yield per acre for a host of foods. Meat doesn't fare well:

POPSNew Orleans: The Art of the Corpse by Andre Codrescu New Orleans sank into the funk like a corpse into the embrace of the earth. The rows of fridges lining the streets looked by moonlight like primed canvasses ready for painting. The city’s artists, who have been enthralled since John James Audubon by New Orleans’ embrace of decay and death (Audubon purchased all his American birds dead from the French Market) were not long in reacting. New Orleans music and art had always been inspired by funk ... Now here was all this funk, magnified a thousand times. And here were all these metal tombs stretching as far as the eye could see, more numerous than the graves they resembled. ,,, In a short time, there were thousands of art works in the city, an exhibition that stretched for miles, Today, most of the show is closed. New Orleans always renewed its armies of ghosts after every disaster of its 500-year history, but this last addition came with its own unique, absolutely new style.

POPSCanadian survives wilderness ordeal on rotting meat " He tried into the night to pry the ATV off with an axe that he had on the vehicle to no avail. He also attempted to lift it up by pounding animal bones into the ground, but his awkward position made that impossible too. "So I'm in survival mode now," he said. "I had to use what I had at my disposal." He stayed alive by eating the animals he had collected, although the rotting flesh made him sick, the Calgary Sun newspaper reported. A hospital official said Hildebrand's injuries are not described as life-threatening, but the newspaper, quoting an Emergency Medical Services official, reported that one leg that was pinned might have to be amputated. POPSTiger in zoo mauling taunted by her victims? This enrages me - the animals should definitely be protected from punks like these. We can't afford to lose any more tigers. I think the boys got what they deserved. If their friend that was killed wasn't taunting her, then his death is these brothers' fault as well. I've only been to zoos for school and work, and I always see boys & men taunting gorillas and the big cats. There should be guards on duty at these particular exhibits and guys like these should be ejected from the zoo immediately.

POPSJersey Devil-The legend fact or fantasy? As the story spread, even grown men declined to venture out at night. It was said that the beast carried off large dogs, geese, cats, small livestock and even occasional children. The children were never seen again, but the animal remains were often found. The Devil was also said to dry up the milk of cows by breathing on them and to kill off the fish in the streams, threatening the livelihood of the entire region.

POPSGirls who don't like MEAT So, the title is a little racy, I"m gonna see what that does for me. ;) Anyway, that is the most ridiculously suggestive pear I've ever seen! (And I've seen a lot of ridiculously suggestive pears, so I would know!) But on the other hand, this does raise a number of important questions about vegetarianism for me. First and foremost: is it really a moral decision? Or simply a solipsistic way of feeling self-important? Mind you, there are plenty of legitimate vegetarians. (Even I experimented with vegansexuality when I was in college, but it was just a phase, I swear! ;) Ted Haggard cured me!) (I also own all the Smiths albums, so that should get me off the hook, right?) But there are a lot more vegetarians out there who are really over the top, and I begin to wonder what they're trying to achieve. Why take a moral stand, but only for cute animals? Why the rhetoric? Above all else, why the evangelism and hostility towards non-vegetarians?

POPSGiant Bioluminescent Squid Captured on Video for First Time! Terrifying! The YouTube link is OK, but see the full-size, high-frame-rate Quicktime version on nature.com to see this rare animal in all its lit-up glory. Like something out of a James Cameron movie.... Remains of Taningia danae often show up in the stomachs of sperm whales. The squid's flabby flesh led experts to think that it floats in the water column like a neutrally buoyant scuba diver. But the new footage shows it can reach speeds of up to 9 kilometres per hour. When presented with bait, the squid attacked, flashing its luminescent spots, or 'photophores', which contain glowing bacteria. It produced longer glows when faced with the bait rig's lights, suggesting that it was performing some sort of mating dance.
