POPSAerial surveys 'underestimate' ferals Feral animals such as cats ,foxes, pigs, and goats, can cause an incredible amount of damage to natural species and an environment that has not evolved defenses against them. Feral pigs can root up the ground, eat ground-nesting animal and endangered plants, and foul water. They need the numbers so they can find out how many animals are causing a problem, so they can decide how many need to be culled to reduce it.

POPSEnding Moderate Drinking Tied To Depression The mice were tested for depression-like behavior using a widely recognized method called the Porsolt Swim Test. The mice are placed inside a beaker filled with water and allowed to swim for six minutes. Mice are good swimmers and have no problem completing this task. The amount of time they spend immobile (floating and not swimming) is measured as an index of despair or depression-like behavior. The more time a mouse spends immobile, the more "depressed" it is thought to be. "This research provides the first evidence that long-term abstinence from moderate alcohol drinking -- rather than drinking per se -- leads to a negative mood state, depression," Hodge said.

POPSWe Need to Protect More Land, Not Less There are few better investments of taxpayer dollars than the land reserve project, which has protected millions of acres of sensitive lands nationwide and significantly reduced soil erosion, all the while costing taxpayers about one tenth as much as traditional farm subsidies. And unlike most farm subsidies — which concentrate wealth in the hands of the wealthy — this program spreads the money around and creates more economic value than it costs.

POPS Tremendous Range Of Unintended Consequences
On the losing side of the equation have been cattle, hog and chicken producers, as well as consumers. The government’s latest projection, released Friday, is that food prices this year will rise as much as 5.5 percent. Some products, including cereals and eggs, are expected to rise about 10 percent. The idea of easing ethanol mandates, while it would also lower the price of corn, is contentious. Keith Collins, the former Agriculture Department chief economist, will release a study on Monday saying that as much as half of the sharp increase in corn prices over the last few years is due to the demands of ethanol production. “We’ve seen a tremendous range of unintended consequences” from the requirement that increasing amounts of ethanol be blended into gasoline. The White House will be forced to confront the ethanol issue next month. States are allowed to asked for waivers of the mandate for corn ethanol on the ground that it is harming the economy or the environment.

POPSJane Goodall: We Need A New Mindset "We should admit that the infliction of suffering on beings who are capable of feeling is ethically problematic and that the amazing human brain should set to work to find new ways of testing and experimenting that will not involve the use of live, sentient beings." "Her call comes as the European Commission prepares to publish draft legislation to update the EU’s animal experiments directive (Directive 86/609 EEC). The existing law is out of date (over 20 years old), with hundreds of thousands of animals currently receiving no protection at all." "Dr Goodall was joined by biomedical researchers, MEPs and animal protectionists at a Replace Animal Experiments in Europe event in Brussels. Event organisers, the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research and the Humane Society International (HSI), are spearheading a campaign to accelerate European efforts to replace animal experiments with more ethical and reliable methods."

POPSBush Administration ordered to quit stalling on polar bear listing "The federal court has thrown this incredible animal a lifeline," said Andrew Wetzler, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council's Endangered Species Project. "The Endangered Species Act requires the decision to be based solely on science, and the science is absolutely unambiguous that the polar bear deserves protection." The Bush Administration may choose to ignore this deadline, just as they have so many others. Still, the honorable Judge Wilken’s decision is a welcome victory in the fight to save the Arctic polar bear.

POPSBunnies and Other Small Creatures The welfare of all rabbits, rodents and ferrets is our primary consideration. We believe that all are equally valuable regardless of breed purity, temperament, state of health, or relationship to humans.

POPSRepublicans Assail Ethanol Production But Mr. McCain and others said those rules should be suspended to put more corn back into the food supply for animal feed, and to encourage farmers to plant other crops.

POPSWolf Spirit There are many ways that the forked animal can hide its nature. Sometimes it goes in the clothing of a wolf, but beware the disguises of the savahe biped. For myself, I would not eat, trap or harm any of my cousin animals.

POPSThe Animals Lawsuit Against Humanity Within the tenets of Islam are found strong support and guidelines for the protection and treatment of animals. In the Qur'an and Hadith (sayings of the Prophet), it is emphasized that animals be treated as humanely as any other of God's vast creation. The Qur'an goes as far to say that cruelty to animals is equivalent to cruel treatment of a human being. Kind treatment of animals is considered a good deed in the same sense that good conduct and treatment between human beings is deemed a good deed.

POPSA Dead Dog As Art?? Beware! This is so cruel and revolting, I simply have no words. I'm horrified at what some people can do, all in the name of "art". This is not art, or a "tribute", it's just sick!
