POPSA Traumatized Elephant "Animal rights advocates have long argued that elephants in most zoos lack enough space and, as a consequence, suffer from foot ailments, arthritis and psychological problems. For its part, the zoo association has clung to its traditions, saying the size of an enclosure matters less than the care elephants receive from zookeepers."

POPSFrank Buck - Bring 'em Back Alive Buck was a man of his era... Hard drinking, hard living, self-made entrepreneur and showman extraordinaire. Buck's fame led to an entire occupation by circus workers today - wild animal tamer. Never a man to turn down a "buck," Buck was a shameless self-promoter and claimed to have even tracked down a Yeti once.

POPSDo Dolphins Have a Sense of the Future? It is their ability to understand sentences of sign language that astound though, with a sentence like “touch the frisbee with your tail and then jump over it” returning just that from the dolphin. This proves more than just rigorous training is the answer, but an understanding of what we are asking of them.

POPS Lion Rides Horse In China Freak Show >>>>>INSANE SADISTIC FREAK SHOW<<<<< Here's yet another form of animal abuse in China - does this country's government have a department dedicated to inventing new and innovative ways of abusing animals?! Skinning cats alive in fur farms, feeding live cattle to lions in one zoo and now making a lion in another zoo (which seems to have had its teeth removed) ride a terrified horse. It defies belief. What's more unbelievable is how the International Olympic Committee can award the Olympics to a country with such an appauling human and animal rights record.

POPSThinking the way animals do
Temple Grandin Ph.D. is an assistant professor of animal behaviour at Colorado State Uni. She suffers from a form of autism, and describes the way she thinks as thinking in pictures. This has helped her understand the way Animals think, with direct association, rather than a logical process. A significant statement which can apply to most people, is the fact that originally as far as she was aware everybody thought the same way. Until she asked people and found this was not the case. She describes a radio station person who said she had no pictures, in her mind, but thought in terms of emotions or words. I'm sure I can understand my dogs. They seem to think in a manner that is simple, and straightforward, it can just be a matter of associating cues with behavior, and remembering Pavlov. I think in Pictures and sounds. There is music I can 'hear' in my mind that not only has the same 'quality' as the original, but there is a remarkable capacity to edit. Perhaps something like Auti

POPSWhite Dog (1982) - allegorical film about racism
White Dog was directed by Sam Fuller but the studio never released it in the US. Bootleg copies are available. The film is about an aspiring actress (Kristy McNichol) in LA who adopts a white German Shepherd and discovers that the dog was trained to attack and kill black people. A black animal trainer (Paul Winfield) takes on the challenge of deprogramming the dog. The film is surprisingly effective, for a low-budget Sam Fuller film--he actually got some decent performances from his actors this time. Maybe its because I love dogs, but I got caught up in McNichol and Winfield's struggle to save this dog's soul from racism (and from being put to death). It is hard for me to see any profound messages in the film's narrative though. Racism is seen as a problem of psychotic, extremist whites but that is a very narrow conception of racism. Still, I'd recommend it, for no other reason than it is a well-made film with an interesting story and good acting.

POPSRingling Bros abusing its elephants? This is not the first time that this circus has been investigated for abusing its elephants. In 2001 the ASPCA sued Ringling Bros for it. Their elephant trainer's tool of choice is the ankus or bullhook - a club with a sharp metal hook on the end which the "trainer" uses to poke the elephant, usually behind the ears, an area that is particularly sensitive and causes the animal extreme pain.
