POPSChange We Can Believe In At last it came time to bake the bread. 'Who will help me bake the bread?', asked the little red hen. 'That would be overtime for me' said the cow. 'I'd lose my welfare benefits,' said the duck. 'I'm a dropout and never learned how,' said the pig. 'If I'm to be the only helper, that's discrimination, ' said the goose. 'Then I will do it by myself,' said the little red hen. She baked five loaves and held them up for all of her neighbors to see. They wanted some and in fact, demanded a share. But the little red hen said, 'No, I shall eat all five loaves.' 'Excess profits!' cried the cow. (Nancy Pelosi) 'Capitalist leech!' screamed the duck. (Barbara Boxer) 'I demand equal rights!' yelled the goose. (Jesse Jackson) The pig just grunted in disdain. (Ted Kennedy)

POPSFather and 13 Year Old Daughter Accused Of Dragging Their Horse Behind Truck A father and daughter were arrested near their home in Florence after a Pinal County Sheriff's deputy saw them drag a horse tied to the back of a truck and then kick the horse in the head, officials said. Gordon Allen Bates, 51, and his 13-year-old daughter, who has not been identified, were arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty on Monday in Florence. Deputies were dispatched to E. Javelina Drive around 6:30 a.m. for a welfare check after a caller told them the owner of a horse was going to kill the animal. The horse, now doing well in the care of the Arizona Department of Agriculture, was bleeding severely from his nose. The horse also had road rash and multiple cuts and abrasions. Bates then told the deputy that the horse would not obey and he needed to get it to another location, PCSO said. Both suspects were arrested and released. Animal cruelty charges have been submitted to the County Attorney's Office.

POPSCool Ideas for Hot Dogs I've seen so many stupid animal owners, but it's never too late to get some "know-how". At this time of year, the warmth is often animals worst enemy. Take care of your dog, cat or whatever you have decided to give love and shelter. Don't be one of the bad statistic.

POPSSF Weekly: A Time to Kill The SF SPCA is moving away from their previous, well-respected no-kill policy, and is accelerating euthanasia of possibly-adoptable pets in order to save money. Every one of my cats has been a shelter rescue. Every cat or dog I have in the future will be a shelter rescue. This story makes me heartsick.

POPSBunnies and Other Small Creatures The welfare of all rabbits, rodents and ferrets is our primary consideration. We believe that all are equally valuable regardless of breed purity, temperament, state of health, or relationship to humans.

POPSGovernment's Crack-Down On Beijing's Cats China's leaders are convinced that animals pose a serious urban health risk and may have contributed to the outbreak of SARS - a deadly respiratory virus - in 2003. Paranoia is so intense that six stray cats -including two pregnant females - were beaten to death with sticks by teachers at a Beijing kindergarten, who feared they might pass illnesses to the children. Cat owners, terrified by the disease warning, are dumping their pets in the streets to be picked up by special collection teams. But the crackdown on cats is seen by animal campaigners as just one of a number of extreme measures being taken by communist leaders to ensure that its capital appears clean, green and welcoming during the Olympics. Taxi drivers have been made to attend lessons in how to greet passengers politely in English and a city-wide courtesy campaign has been launched to teach Beijing's notoriously dour and grumpy citizens how to smile and be pleasant to foreigners.
