Why I'm Voting For Barack Obama
merrie
by merrie  11-1-2008    1
It’s time we all reached down deep, some maybe deeper than than others, to Save the Children. It’s Obama as the Sally Struthers of our national conscience. It’s more than that. He’s the guy on our big national speedboat with lots of babes in bikinis. What are you waiting for? He’s got the secret to attaining universal health care and wealth equity, you just have to buy his tape. America can have killer abs, without all that sweating and going to the gym and kicking down third-world mudhut doors. It is that easy. Return it in four years, no obligation, if not fully satisfied. And that’s why I’ve decided to announce that I’m voting for Obama.* * That’s what I’ll be telling pollsters, the national media and everyone I know, anyway. What I do in the polling booth is my own damn business. Look, the leadership of the free world and all that is really important, but the last thing I want is anyone to think I’m a racist. Or even worse, not cool.**

Small enough for me
janclip1300
by janclip1300  9-22-2008
When you're like me, frantically spouting words to keep up with your thoughts, doing all sorts of stuff hence having numerous programs open and running... then you might be in need of some kind of dictionary/spelling checker. But most of those programs claim too much space, resources and become more of a annoyance, rather than being useful. tinySpell is just the right fit. This humble piece of software doesn't get in my way and I can enable/disable it with a single touch. But best of all, it's free!

Youth Day laws 'undermine basic rights'
tabsey
by tabsey  7-1-2008
Seems the Catholics feel more threatened than the APEC mob. "If I were to wear a t-shirt proclaiming that World Youth Day is a waste of public money in a World Youth Day-declared area, and I refuse to remove it when an officer, an authorised officer of the Rural Fire Service asks me to do so, then I'm potentially committing a criminal offence," she said.

The ADHD Advantage: Did the “Hyper” Gene Benefit Our Nomadic Ancestors?
Mohir
by Mohir  6-18-2008    2
"So, in other words, all of us with ADHD need to head back to the desert with a pack of camels loaded up with tents to really make the most of our “disorder” (how dare they call it that when it turns out it’s an evolutionary advantage unless you’re a semi-comatose couch potatoes). Of course half of us will absent-mindedly forget to bring essentials—like water—but we’ll have a lot of fun. Who’s with me?"

Color Psychology
Aribeth
by Aribeth  3-2-2008    2
Color psychology is concerned with the effects of color on mood, emotion, behavior.Colors are not only used for decorations or adding beauty to an object, but they can be used to determine personality traits to affect people’s mood and to effect on other people around you. Each colour is connected to various areas of our body and will affect us differently emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. Several ancient cultures, including the Egyptians and Chinese, practiced chromotherapy, or using colors to heal. Chromotherapy is sometimes referred to as light therapy or colourology and is still used today as a holistic or alternative treatment. In this treatment: * Red was used to stimulate the body and mind and to increase circulation. * Yellow was thought to stimulate the nerves and purify the body. * Orange was used to heal the lungs and to increase energy levels. * Blue was believed to soothe illnesses and treat pain. I'll take red :-)

Mitt Romney Endorses McCain Called Him A True American Hero
merrie
by merrie  2-14-2008
Romney today was gracious, lavishing praise in prepared remarks on the man who defeated him. "This is a man who tied his political fortunes to the fortunes of his country in a time of war," Romney said. "Such courage is not always rewarded in politics, but it was this time – and that is a credit to both the man and to the party he will lead in the election of 2008." The difference was especially stark compared to the last GOP nomination battle in 2000. As opposed to the week Romney took before endorsing, it took two months for McCain to get behind George W. Bush after that bitter contest. And when he did so in May of that year he initially declined to use the word "endorse." Only after being asked by a reporter why he wouldn't formally offer his blessing did McCain say "I endorse Gov. Bush" -- and then he said it over and over again as if to show his annoyance.

Your eyes don't lie
pokkets
by pokkets  12-23-2007    5
There are more examples on the page. There are people knowing these behaviours, who try and use the common impression to their advantage. For example the people who are dishonest, who have trained themselves, to maintain eye contact, and so inspire unfounded confidence. This tactic can be defeated sometimes by remembering the principle, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I thought it was interesting that eyes up right was visualizing an image, while up left was remembering a sound. Sounds reasonable the way the brain is divided right/left, but I wonder if it is the same for left handers. Or somebody that is ambidextrous

New Facebook ads: privacy concerns not just alarmism
enbar
by enbar  12-5-2007
Security researchers at CA have found that Facebook is now collecting information about your activities on partner sites regardless -- this is important -- regardless of whether you have opted out or even whether you are logged in to Facebook . Also see the linked follow-up post (slightly more technical, http://snipr.com/1utzp). I am not usually really worried by advertising-related privacy issues, but the fact that Facebook now tracks you when you're logged out of the site -- and the additional fact that they are publicly misrepresenting this capability -- is a little unnerving.
