POPSProbability overrides the intuitive. "The reason that our folk intuitions so often get it wrong is that we evolved in what evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins calls “Middle World”—a land midway between short and long, small and large, slow and fast, young and old. Out of personal preference, I call it “Middle Land.” The middle, the plain is a big bias that shapes and limits one's perception.

POPSDiscovery of Atlantis
Here's the current situation: We have exhausted the means available to us, given the technological limitations for deep-sea research, and the results failed to either prove or disprove the Cyprus theory. If human beings did once live around the purported Acropolis Hill, currently halfway between Cyprus and Syria, and made modifications to the anomalies already there in order to make it suitable for human habitation, we would not know about it. There is no way to find that out without the ability to "x-ray" large areas of the seafloor, to see what's under all the mud, and discover whether or not man-made structures are there Narrow sonar beams that give us foot-wide glimpse of what's under the mud, in a straight line as the sonar device is towed behind the ship, are not going to provide what is needed. The technology we have today is not up to par for the task at hand. Imagine how much energy would be needed to penetrate the mud in a sizable area, and give us a picture of what's under

POPSTHE ANOMALIST I found this site while perusing lynn's links. please forgive typos and punvtuation as i am recovering from carpal tunnel surgery on lft hand early on Friday. I am rt handed but i have a left hand usually making 7 out of 10 key strokes. Hunt & peck is not easy for me and they still have to operate on rt hand. Please bear with me but I found this site to be extremely in my range of collecting curiosities and high weirdness as Kenneth Hite calls it and if you have never had the luxury you should take a look at his live journal site. http://princeofcairo.livejournal.com/ I gurantee you will come to love his wonderful take on all things conspiratorial, Fortean, high weirdness, and secret history. it fuels my Muse for days at a time. i really do wish i could have done the Anomalist justice but give it a look, you may be surprised!

POPSTrying To Debunk The Internet Rumors Further, the schedule shows Michelle Obama as a "Special Guest," not a speaker. Last, if it wasn't at the church, why would the DVD have been on sale there? I remain highly skeptical that this story will amount to anything. 2d UPDATE: More on problems with this story: Does it seem at all plausible that anyone would go into a 30-plus minute racist rant during a "Woman's Luncheon" at the Sheraton Hotel, moderated by two mainstream local TV news reporters/anchors from the Chicago ABC affiliate? Consider also that Michelle Obama was listed only as a "Special Guest," not even listed as speaking (the Keynote Speaker for the luncheon was Jesse Jackson). And then somehow this supposed rant at a non-church event held at the Sheraton Hotel was for sale on the Trinity United website. Thus, I think that the most common version of the story (put forth by Hillbuzz) is almost certainly false.

POPSTop 10 Macabre Collectibles The List Universe is an excellent source of esoteric, exotic and informative subjects that you would never believe were available to see or read. This article features some of the LEGAL Collectibles as there are many (ahem) not-so-legal collectibles that have been made known over the years...

POPSHigh-flying Electrons May Provide New Test Of Quantum Theory "The experiment, outlined in a new paper,* would not only mean more accurate identifications of elements in everything from stars to environmental pollutants but also could put the modern theory of the atom to the most stringent tests yet." "NIST researchers Joseph Tan and colleagues hope to implement this approach experimentally in their Electron Beam Ion Trap Facility. The idea would be to strip an atom of all its electrons, cool it and inject a single electron in a high-flying orbit. Then the researchers would use a sensitive measurement device known as a frequency comb to measure the light absorbed by this Rydberg atom. The result could be an ultraprecise frequency measurement that would yield an improved value for the Rydberg constant. Such a measurement would be so sensitive that it could reveal anomalies in quantum electrodynamics, the modern theory of the atom."

POPSUnwrapping The EU Climate Package You may say that these are anomalies against the trend, but we seem to have an awful lot of anomalies and not very much trend. "Isn't it true that we are relying on predictions from computer models which are increasingly at odds with reality, and that based on those predictions we are putting in place policies which will do huge damage to European economies, and impoverish our grandchildren?". The guy from the WWF booed. Commissioner Dimas muttered a long reply which contained a lot about the IPCC and the Stern report, nothing at all about the actual climate data . And a footnote on sea ice. Two months ago there was no sea ice south of Greenland. Today my jet flew over the North Atlantic about 400 nm south of the south cape of Greenland, and there was sea ice as far as the eye could see, extending all the way to Newfoundland. This hasn't been seen for many years. A very strong La Nina indeed, helped along by the eerily-prolonged solar minimum.

POPSNO MORE LOL Loi is to be used when something is mildly entertaining, yet not humorous enough to evoke actual laughter. Actual laughter, however, may still be represented by "lol" or it's other manifestations (LMAO, ROFL, etc). NoMoreLOL.com is calling upon conscious chatters, bloggers, texters and instant messengers to help us spread our message. If you suspect someone of False Lolling be sure to direct them to this website and warn them of the penalties of internet purjury. loi :-)
