POPSStay Off of Fox News: Obama Administration Warns Democrat Strategist
White House Communications Director Anita Dunn said that she had checked with colleagues who "deal with TV issues" and that they had not told people to avoid Fox. On the contrary, they had urged people to appear on the network, Dunn wrote in an e-mail. But Patrick Caddell, a Fox News contributor and former pollster for President Carter, said he had spoken to Democratic consultants who said they were told by the White House to avoid appearances on Fox. He declined to give their names. Caddell said he had not gotten that message himself from the White House. He added: "I have heard that they've done that to others in not too subtle ways. I find it appalling. When the White House gets in the business of suppressing dissent and comment, particularly from its own party, it hurts itself." Some observers say White House officials might be urging consultants to spurn Fox to isolate the network and make it appear more partisan. Los Angeles Times

POPSFt. Hood suspect reportedly shouted `Allahu Akbar' At least six months ago, Hasan came to the attention of law enforcement officials because of Internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats, including posts that equated suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the lives of their comrades. Investigators had not determined for certain whether Hasan was the author of the posting, and a formal investigation had not been opened before the shooting, said law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the case. The FBI, local police and other agencies searched Hasan's apartment Thursday night after evacuating the complex in Killeen, said city spokeswoman Hilary Shine. She referred questions about what was found to the FBI. The FBI in Dallas referred questions to a spokesman who was not immediately available early Friday morning.

POPS Twelve Killed in Ft. Hood Rampage The facility, called a Soldier Rating and Processing center, handles administrative details for soldiers. Banks says two shooters were apparently involved. There was no immediate word on who they were, nor on identities of the dead. Banks says the second incident took place at a theater on the sprawling base. Another Army official identified that site as the Howze Theater. That official, who requested anonymity to discuss an evolving incident, said a graduation had been scheduled for 2 p.m. at the theater. President Obama called the shootings a “horrific outburst of violence” and said his “prayers are with the wounded and the families of the fallen.” With Associated Press reports.

POPSSaudi Royal Air Force carries strikes against Yemeni rebels
The same dynamic has played out in various forms in Lebanon, where Iran supports the Shiite militant Hezbollah and Saudi Arabia favors a U.S.-backed faction, and in Iraq, where Saudi Arabia and Iran have thrown support to conflicting sides in the Sunni-Shiite struggle. A top Saudi government adviser confirmed "a large scale" military operation underway on the Saudi-Yemeni border with further reinforcements sent to the rugged, mountainous area. "It is a sustained operation which aims to finish this problem on our border," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. He said Saudi troops were coordinating with Yemen's army, but Yemen's defense ministry denied the Saudis were inside the country. The northern rebels, known as Hawthis, have been battling Yemeni government forces the past few months in the latest flare-up of a sporadic five-year conflict. They claim their needs are ignored by a Yemeni government that is increasingly allied wit

POPS'Desecrated Flag' Video is DNC Finalist “They should never pick that,” said the contestant, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “It makes the Democrats look really, really bad.” A spokesman for Organizing for America said the group was not prepared to provide immediate comment on the video, which, according to the OFA Web site, was produced by Daniel Lahoda and Saber. According to the OFA Web site, the 20 finalists will be judged by the public and a panel of experts that includes DNC Chairman Tim Kaine, Obama campaign chief David Plouffe, Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.), singer will.i.am and Hollywood stars Rosario Dawson and Dule Hill. Daniel Libit contributed to this story.

POPSSearching For Consensus on Afghanistan
share the same strategic interests and that the return to power of the Taliban would automatically mean a new sanctuary for al-Qaeda. Is that a myth? Here is Barack Obama on March 27, 2009, announcing his first new strategy for Afghanistan: "And if the Afghan government falls to the Taliban - or allows al Qaeda to go unchallenged - that country will again be a base for terrorists who want to kill as many of our people as they possibly can." He added: The return in force of al Qaeda terrorists who would accompany the core Taliban leadership would cast Afghanistan under the shadow of perpetual violence. Later in the Post article, the reporters quote a "senior Obama official" comparing Afghanistan and Pakistan. "Eight months ago, if you had asked people which was worse, everybody would have said Pakistan is worse and Afghanistan is in good shape." Afghanistan was in good shape? 2008 was the deadliest year for American troops there. Nobody paying any attention

POPS Three Accomplices in Terror Plot Identified Prosecutors have said the three others who shopped with him in Aurora, Colo., for the beauty products also accompanied him on an August 2008 flight to Pakistan for terrorism training. By that time, he had already come to authorities' attention. A criminal complaint has suggested that police acting without the FBI's knowledge might have compromised the investigation and helped blow the surveillance of Zazi by questioning a Muslim religious leader about him. The imam and Zazi's father face charges of lying to terrorism investigators; they deny the allegations. As authorities have continued to search for additional suspects, they've issued a flurry of terrorism warnings for sports complexes, hotels and transit systems based on their investigation. POPSIran's "Secret" Nukes "But the U.S. has known of the facility's existence "for several years" through intelligence developed by U.S., French and British agencies, a senior White House official said. Obama decided to gather allies to talk publicly on Friday about their view of the project so as not to let Iran have the only word, officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity to let the statements from Obama and the leaders remain the focus. The plant would be about the right size to enrich enough uranium to produce one or two bombs a year, but inspectors must get inside to know what is actually going on, the official said. The three leaders hoped the disclosure would increase pressure on the global community to impose new sanctions on Iran if it refuses to stop its nuclear program."

POPSColo. Man in Suspected NYC Subway Plot Admits Ties to Al Qaeda
The official went on to say that the plot was being directed from outside the United States. Zazi had submitted to two eight-hour interrogations, Wednesday and Thursday, at the FBI offices in Denver, and he was called back for further questioning Friday. The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force went through Zazi's home, as well as the nearby residence of his aunt, Rabia Zazi. The searches are part of a terrorism investigation that fed fears of a possible subway bomb plot and led to several police raids Monday in New York City. Zazi, who authorities suspect of training at a Pakistani terror camp, reportedly had bomb-making diagrams on a computer that he carried with him on a visit to New York. Zazi's attorney had denied these allegations. His defense team said Friday that FBI agents also will question Zazi's father, though the FBI didnt't say why it wanted to talk to him. Najibullah Zazi hasn't been arrested, and his attorney, Arthur Folsom, says he doesn't expect him

POPSTRUSTe-TNS Study: Consumer Attitudes About Behavioral Targeting Behavioral targeting has become a critical online trust issue, What do consumers think about having their browsing behaviors tracked for marketing purposes? For the second year in a row, TRUSTe and TNS surveyed consumer attitudes about behavioral targeting. The survey results found that most consumers consider privacy important enough to take steps to protect it. Many individuals know their behavior is being targeted, and they’re uncomfortable with being tracked, even with the assurance of anonymity. Most are in favor of tools and features that control targeted advertising. Businesses have a stark choice: They can either increase transparency about their behavioral advertising practices or risk increasing consumer doubt and suspicion. Companies also need to treat personal information with respect and earn the right to deliver advertising based on behavior.

POPSA Positive Example suitable for Clipmarks Devotees
I have often used clipmarks as a sounding board, to flesh out my own premature ideas in the delightful cloak of semi-anonymity. Not everything that I say I fully mean. Some thoughts are sounding boards to my own opinions until I firm them up and watch them gel in my own head while my fingers are flying across the keyboard. In the beginning, I spent every day reading comments people left behind mine, opening them up like christmas presents. For awhile, I left clipmarks because the animosity became so acrimonious that I suffered indigestion along with the cup of coffee and cookie I was enjoying while I read CM in the late morning. I have enjoyed clipmarks and enjoy reading the clips from people I don't necessarily agree with as well as those of whom I do agree. I hope in the spirit of the late Ted Kennedy we can take his example of leadership and disagree without rancor and argue passionately with tolerance for an opposing view. Thank you for reading. Good Day.

POPS$9Trillion+ Deficit Is So Last Week, Fast Forward to 2003
The Obama Administration announced today that they will go ahead and investigate the previous administration after all. The Washington Post reported: Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. has decided to appoint a prosecutor to examine nearly a dozen cases in which CIA interrogators and contractors may have violated anti-torture laws and other statutes when they allegedly threatened terrorism suspects, according to two sources familiar with the move. Holder is poised to name John Durham, a career Justice Department prosecutor from Connecticut, to lead the inquiry, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the process is not complete. Durham's mandate, the sources added, will be relatively narrow: to look at whether there is enough evidence to launch a full-scale criminal investigation of current and former CIA personnel who may have broken the law in their dealings with detainees. Many of the harshest CIA interrogation techniques have not . . .

POPSCIA Removed from Interrogation functions I think this is what this clip indicated. Prior to this, right away, the new President Obama said No More Torture, and some other positive things to reverse Bush era abuses (restoring proper judicial requirements for wiretaps, etc.) But now, instead of saying the CIA, the military and others must abide by proper standards and USA law...it more dramatically removes the CIA from this role of interrogations. Another good step in restoring our laws and principles.

POPSDetainees Shown CIA Officers' Photos
The photos were taken by researchers hired by the John Adams Project, a joint effort of the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, to support military counsel at Guantanamo Bay, according to the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the inquiry. It was unclear whether the Justice Department is also examining those organizations. Both groups have long said that they will zealously investigate the CIA's interrogation program at "black sites" worldwide as part of the defense of their clients. But government investigators are now looking into whether the defense team went too far by allegedly showing the detainees the photos of CIA officers, in some cases surreptitiously taken outside their homes. If proved, the allegations would highlight how aggressively both military lawyers and their allies in the human rights community are moving to shed light on the CIA's interrogation . .

POPSUPDATE: Bombs And Mortars Kill At Least 50 In Iraqi Capital Series of Blasts in Central Baghdad Kill at Least 50, Injure 300, Police Say http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,540468,00.html BAGHDAD — Iraqi police and medical officials say at least six bomb and mortar attacks have struck high-profile targets in central Baghdad, including one near the parliament building, killing at least 50 people and wounding 300 others. It was not yet immediately clear where the other deaths among the 50 people killed occurred. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information. AP Television News footage from inside parliament showed debris and broken glass from the blast in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone. It wasn't immediately clear what caused that explosion. The Green Zone has often been a target of insurgent mortar and rocket attacks. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

POPSObama Caught By Surprise "We've gotten to this point where health care on the left is determined by the breadth of the public option. I don't understand how that has become the measure of whether what we achieve is health-care reform." "It's a mystifying thing," he added. "We're forgetting why we are in this." Another top aide expressed chagrin that a single element in the president's sprawling health-care initiative has become a litmus test for whether the administration is serious about the issue. "It took on a life of its own," he said. In search of new momentum, Obama plans to discuss the matter Thursday with thousands of his most loyal supporters in a nationwide "strategy call" hosted by Organizing for America, a grass-roots arm of the Democratic National Committee. He is likely to repeat what he and his top surrogates have said for months: that he will not "draw a line in the sand" about the inclusion of a public plan and that no one provision is a "deal breaker" . . .

POPSI Can Think of Better Jobs for MICHigan I'm kind of getting tired of politicians thinking Michigan can be a dumping ground for their prisoners, with the idea of promoting employment opportunities in MI. This is BS in so many ways. I do not want terrorists (known or suspected) on US soil, do you?? If California pursues Michigan prisons to dump their prisoners because they cannot afford to house them, who do you think is going to take the economic hit for this when Cal can't pay the bill? This is no different to me than Detroit politicians dumping toxic waste under the table with our tax dollars. Why not turn the Standish prison into some type of rehabilitation facility for drug and alcohol addicts, or temporary housing or emergency medical? There are other more positive ways to create jobs. I vote: TAKE NO PRISONERS!!

POPSJackson's Doctor Gave Drug Officials Believe Killed Him A doctor would administer it when Jackson went to sleep, then stop the IV drip when the singer wanted to wake up. Propofol is powerful sedative drug. Once hooked on it, it is practically impossible to return back. To make the doctor a scapegoat for somebody's wreaked life is bizarre twist of common sense, although not seldom sign of despair. The official also provided a glimpse into how the pop star was living in the weeks before he died, describing the room in which Jackson slept in his rented Beverly Hills mansion as outfitted with oxygen tanks and an IV drip. The temperature upstairs was stiflingly hot when authorities arrived at the singer's house after his death. Gas fireplaces and the heating system were on high because Jackson always complained of feeling cold, the official said.
