POPSIs the Rudd Government now all talk? Sadly it looks increasingly that the great moves initially by the Rudd Government of Australia have become little more than "hot air". As if we need more Global warming! Sea Shepherd have been left to soldier on alone as the Japanese practise their butchering of the whales. Garrett, Australia's environment spokesman was full of noise prior to his election - now he is ominously quiet. The excuse is that Australia is using diplomatic channels - and we know how mind-numbingly slow progress there can be devoid of the public gaze! Comeon "Ozzies" stir the tripe out of your Government - it needs a rocket up its backside!

POPSRising seas threaten west Antarctica. the ice shelves have prevented the land locked ice from flowing into the ocean. Now with the shelves melting and liquid water beneath the ice, it can have the same effect in geological terms as popping a cork. Wet ice is slippery

POPSOil Crisis Triggers Secret Plans For Acquisition Of World's Seabeds "If the British do not change their approach, we shall have to interpret it as aggression," said President Nestor Kirchner. The forgotten relics of the Empire make Britain a player in the marine race. There are the waters off the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, already home to a clutch of oil exploration companies; the Pitcairn Islands in the Pacific; Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean; and a string of outposts such as Montserrat, the Caymans, the British Virgin Islands, the Turks and Caicos, and Bermuda. The two-page summary of Britain's submission to the UN gives little away. It merely notes that the UK is providing information on the limits of shelf "beyond 200 nautical miles", adding that there will be further requests.

POPSSouthern Ocean rise due to warming not ice. I'm sure whatever affects one ocean will affect all of them either directly or indirectly. With all of the talk of ice melts, where the rise may come from land based ice, that slides into the ocean when once it would have been frozen tight, one of the primary causes of sea level rise will be due to the fact that like all but a few things, water expands when it warms. While the temperature rises may seem small, the volumes involved mean the expansion can be significant. That's not to mention the increased amount of energy held in the water, which can contribute to stronger storms, and rougher seas. The ocean is a big place, and for the temperature to rise by one degree, means a vast amount of energy stored.

POPSAntarctica? Cruise ship? What the hell? Now I'm not one to criticize what other people do for recreation. Goodness knows I've been on the edge of that curve before. But what the hell is a cruise ship doing in the Antarctic? These people evidently have never heard of Miami.

POPSSwings and Checks in Nature How come scaremongering TV journalists do not publicise a significant increase in the ice cap as readily as they do with melting icebergs and glaciers? Maybe it does not scare people as much and will not sell so well. Cynical? Me? Nah!

POPSFabulous sea creatures from Antarctica Research such as this will enable scientists to learn how climate change drove previous evolutionary changes. If only it was possible to accurately predict the the future effects of global warming......

POPSWhalers' Woes I hope Greenpeace doesn't gloat over this too much - their own actions just last week were deplorable to say the least when two of their ship mates were resuced by these Japanese whalers and then the two sumarily attacked their resuers. Violence is obviously not the answer in these disputes and Greenpeace members should really give their heads a shake as much as the Japanese should re-think their own trangressions against whales and the cold ocean environments they violate!
