POPSIs the Rudd Government now all talk? Sadly it looks increasingly that the great moves initially by the Rudd Government of Australia have become little more than "hot air". As if we need more Global warming! Sea Shepherd have been left to soldier on alone as the Japanese practise their butchering of the whales. Garrett, Australia's environment spokesman was full of noise prior to his election - now he is ominously quiet. The excuse is that Australia is using diplomatic channels - and we know how mind-numbingly slow progress there can be devoid of the public gaze! Comeon "Ozzies" stir the tripe out of your Government - it needs a rocket up its backside!

POPSGreenpeace shifting focus to dialogue in anti-whaling campaign
Whaling is a barbaric murderous business and besides the moral implications of killing our friends, great beautiful, graceful, air-breathing, large-brained, socially sophisticated, singing, communicating animals, whaling is just contributing to the more dangerous human impact on killing the oceans. When we finish killing the oceans thru our pollutions and overfishing, we'll be dead. Brutal humanity is disgusting to some of us but not apparently to some here in this forum (Japan Today) and in Japan, Iceland and Norway. Thank the Sea Gods for Sea Shepherd and Capt. Paul Watson who will be In the Southern Ocean aboard the "Steve Irwin" to confront the Whalers again. I have no quarrel with Greenpeace, corporate PR is their forte and they have the $$ for it and they weren't all that effective stopping the whalers anyway, just taking pictures and grandstanding in style, which is OK--it brought some attention to whaling but I have much more respect for Capt. Watson and his dedicated crew in

POPSEXPLORING THE SUBGLACIAL GAMBURTSEV MOUNTAINS Somewhere in the Gamburtsev region there could be a location were it is possible to drill down to ices that are more than a million years old. This is at least 200,000 years older than the most ancient ices currently in the possession of scientists.

POPSMinke whales shedding blubber The study is Japanese which puts the problem in a nut shell. They say the whales are 'suffering' because of a low krill number. What is significant about that? Tuna eat krill.

POPSColossal squid was 'lethargic blob' So they caught one squid, and now they think all squid are the same. Giant Squid don't travel as well on the surface. If it was getting shorter, I wonder how big she was before she started to brood?.

POPSSeals help measure Southern Ocean It's not easy to measure for us to measure the currents, and temperatures under the ice, but the seals have no trouble. A simple solution to what may otherwise have been a difficult problem to solve. The ice caps and polar oceans can provide critical information concerning the temperature regulation of the planet so details of changes are necessary to contribute to any picture we might pretend to have. I wonder if they've tried penguins?
