POPSWorld biggest airplane - Antonov The largest aircraft in the world is the Antonov An-225 Mriya. Making its maiden flight in 1988, it was built to transport the Soviet Union’s space shuttle Buran. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Antonov 225 did not fly for years until May, 2001, when a 15-minute test flight was conducted in hopes of using the plane again for transporting large cargo. The plane is 276 feet long and has a maximum gross weight of 1,411,000 pounds—also making it the heaviest plane in the air.
