POPSThe Financial Cost of Feeling "Lerner says she and her colleagues worry about this, and their many media appearances since the study was announced are in part an effort to help make consumers more aware. That way, says Lerner, when people shop, “they aren’t victims of their sad moods"

POPSNation Finally Shitty Enough To Make Social Progress I know the Onion is satire but this strikes much too close to home to be labeled mere satire. As we enter a new era of equality for all people, the election of Barack Obama will decidedly be a milestone in U.S. history, undeniable proof that Americans, when pushed to the very brink, are willing to look past outward appearances and judge a person by the quality of his character and strength of his record. So as long as that person is not a woman.

POPSObama Didn't Have The "Political Courage" To Leave Rev. Wright's Church For almost two years, I've been trying to encourage people to go to public appearances by politicians, ask them tough questions, and upload their responses to video sharing sites. A month ago, I sent an open letter to a series of mostly Pajamas Media bloggers urging them to push such a plan, and none of them did. Instead, some pushed loony theories, some sat in a dark corner moaning (PW), and others concentrated on their Amazon sales. Now, one other person from that group - almost assuredly doing so on her own initiative and not on the prompting of the other hacks at PJM - has done something similar to my plan that might have an effect on the election. It would have been better if the person asked had been Obama and if the question had been an actual tough question, but a stumbling gaffe response might be enough to spur others to do something similar in the future.

POPSShepard the Anchor Looking incredulous, Mr. Smith gave up. He read a statement from the McCain campaign praising the plumber’s “penetrating and clear analysis.” Then Mr. Smith said: “I just want to make this 100 percent perfectly clear. Barack Obama has said repeatedly and demonstrated repeatedly that Israel will always be a friend of the United States no matter what happens once he becomes president of the United States. His words.” “The rest of it,” he said, “man, it just gets frightening sometimes.” Yes it does.

POPSTrue To His Faith
"Is it possible, I asked, that becoming a priest was a way of avoiding coming to terms with his sexuality? Farrow had, after all, once prayed to God to "please make me normal, please make me normal." I asked if he'd had any relationships while serving as a priest. Yes, he confessed. He seemed near tears and stopped short of sharing the details. But he said it had ended. I wondered again how anyone could go through such an ordeal and remain committed to a church that considers it a sin for a gay person to act on biological urges. Whom do you even talk to for help? I asked." "That's a valid question," he said, but he believes he was addressing his spiritual rather than sexual identity in becoming a priest. Among the critics in his own parish and beyond, there are those who quote the Bible to condemn homosexuality and gay marriage. "The Bible is not a book, it's a library written over 15 centuries," Farrow told me, suggesting that Christianity has and should continue to evolve

POPSRNC Puts Palin on Fashion Welfare; Palin Goes Wild Republicans give Clothing-Stamps to Palin and family. Palin uses it at Neiman Mark-Ups. What hypocrisy. Talk about Socialism! She cannot afford her own clothes? They are millionaires! Meet the real Jane six-pack. Still think she is "conservative" fiscally? Take a look at the itemized bills. Spends like a "liberal" doesn't she? I wonder how people who donated to the RNC feel about this spending of their contributions? Just another example of Palin's principles, she will accept charity and handouts from others. Really, how did she talk the RNC into this? Or did they want her to get a "makeover" in fashion? I wonder how much they paid for her hair do-over. Question: If Palin was a man running for VP, would he get this treatment? Not a chance. So this policy is sexist too.

POPSGuess Who Else Has Tax Liens? Because, you know, associations matter when choosing a plumber, but apparently not when choosing a President. If tax liens are such an indicator of character and trustworthiness, wouldn’t it have more significance for the treasurer of a presidential campaign than for a man who just asked a question of the candidate? If the national media has such an interest in investigating a plumber who made a couple of national appearances, why wouldn’t they have at least the same interest in the people running a major party presidential campaign? Of course not. The same people who instruct us that Barack Obama’s 20-year membership in Jeremiah Wright’s church while Wright called 9/11 “chickens coming home to roost” now interrogate Joe the Plumber on national TV about his brief flirtation with the Natural Law Party.

POPSMcCain's Double Standard If McCain wants to bash Obama for his occasional appearances on the same board with Ayers, a 1970's political activist who Obama disclaims friendship with, then he needs to examine his admitted long-time friendship to a government operative who was in the thick of the biggest political scandal in American history - and one of the greatest threats to the rule of law, G. Gordon Liddy. Both Ayers and Liddy say they have no regrets for what they did. Both served prison terms for their actions. Liddy, a radio talk show host, gives the advice: "if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot, they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. Kill the sons of bitches." Ayers, since imprisonment, has spent his time helping the poor and disadvantaged. McCain thinks Obama should apologize for associating with a criminal extremist. To which Obama might reply: After you.

POPSBig Difference in Post-Debate Spin Does Ifill Have a Conflict of Interest? The internet has been buzzing with charges that tonight's debate moderator, Gwen Ifill, has a conflict of interest because she is writing a book, The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama, that is due to be released on inauguration day in 2009. If nothing else, it creates the appearance of a conflict of interest, much as would a journalist's participation in a political rally or partisan political activity. This is the view taken by the Columbia Journalism Review: Gwen Ifill has done solid, important journalism. She’ll likely be a good, tough, and neutral moderator to the vice-presidential debate. Let’s set that aside, for now. Conflict of interest is often about appearances. There appears, to us, to be a conflict in Ifill moderating tomorrow night’s vice presidential debate. http://volokh.com/posts/chain_1222978481.shtml

POPSObama's Cynical Bracelet The fallen soldier's mom who gave Obama the memorial bracelet has asked him to stop wearing it and mentioning her son's name. I am sure Sheehan will be glad to give him a bracelet to replace it. This man-child trojan horse is as phony as they come.
