People Power Can Beat Climate Change
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-11-2008    1
Engaging communities involves a lot more than simply asking for sacrifices. A supportive planning system and the guarantee of a stable, premium price for energy sold back to the grid has given people an incentive to join forces and create renewable energy. At a time of economic downturn and rising fuel costs, it is hard to imagine that the advantages of this opportunity to develop sustainable income streams would be lost on the general public. It offers politicians, business and investors the opportunity to unleash an entrepreneurial spirit capable of reaping financial and environmental returns for both the people and the planet.

New Piracy Approach "Joins 'Em"
tmarch
by tmarch  11-4-2008
By digitally cataloging whole video libraries Auditude can quickly stick an ad on clipped and illegally posted videos. Contrast this with the Music Industry's punitive strategy to this one that uses the technology and users' penchant to appropriate, mash-up and share. This is a good example of investing in new thinking - who will do the same for education?

Researchers Can Swat Flies
Imnclady
by Imnclady  8-31-2008
"It is best not to swat at the fly's starting position," Dickinson said. Instead, aim for the escape route. And who didn't need to know that??? I'm curious, does anyone think there was a "need" to research on why it's so hard to swat a fly ?

Synthetic Biology: funders move to address social and ethical challenges
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-11-2008    1
It reviews what synthetic biology is, where it has come from, and where it is going, as well as making recommendations to research funders and the scientific community about how social and ethical issues should be addressed. These include: * The need for scientists to engage with the public early in the development of synthetic biology to ensure that research does not get ahead of public attitudes * Synthetic biology must not be over-hyped by its supporters and critics should not exaggerate the risks it poses * Reviewing current regulations and guidelines to ensure that an appropriate governance framework is in place before most synthetic biology applications are introduced

The Oil Cartel Of Our Own Making
merrie
by merrie  6-4-2008
the 85.9 billion barrels of crude offshore won't be tapped. The May BLM report explains why most onshore oil won't be tapped, either. Of the 279 million acres of federal land "with potential for oil or natural gas resources," 60 percent is off limits to leases as a matter of federal statute or administrative policy. Another 23 percent is open to leases with "restrictions." These include such things as "lands that can be leased but ground-disturbing oil and natural gas exploration and development activities are prohibited" and "lands that can be leased, but stipulations ... limit the time of the year when oil and gas exploration and drilling can take place to less than 3 months." While compliance with these laws may delay, modify or prohibit oil and gas activities, these laws represent the values and bounds Congress believes appropriate to manage Federal lands." You elected Congress. It paid you back with $4.00-per-gallon gas.

Chinese Man Sentenced In Aegis Secrets Case
merrie
by merrie  3-25-2008
Investigators said they found three encrypted CDs in the couple’s luggage that contained documents on a submarine propulsion system, a solid-state power switch for ships and a PowerPoint presentation on the future of power electronics. Mak’s wife, Rebecca Laiwah Chiu, pleaded guilty last year on the eve of her trial to one count of acting as a foreign agent without registering with the U.S. government. She is serving three years in federal prison and will be deported upon release. His brother, Tai Mak, pleaded guilty last year to conspiring to violate export control laws in exchange for a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Tai Mak’s wife, Fuk Li, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting the violation of export control laws and received three years of probation. Yui “Billy” Mak, the son of Tai Mak and Fuk Li, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting the violation of export control laws and was sentenced to time already served. The three will also be deported.

Could aply to any newspaper
Unspun
by Unspun  2-28-2008
Unspun recently wrote about how The Jakarta Post is trying to cope with change and technology by revamping its website and trying to incorporate interactive features like RSS and comments -- although it could have gone further. The Post is apparently in good company - no less than The New York Times -- when it comes to Luddite journalists and board directors. Is Marc Andreessen too gloomy or are the days of the traditional newspaper numbered? Can dailies printed on paper survive the next few years if they do not have an interactive strategy to back them up? Andreessen may be gloomy but Unspun thinks he has a point. That's why Unspun began blogging and dabbling in new media: in a world where traditional media is of little importance, there is no need for PR persons of the traditional mold.

Donor Disclosure
Allison Van Dusen
by Allison Van Dusen  2-7-2008
Here's an interesting find by The Globe - that almost half the parents who used egg donors don't want to share the information with their children. It appears that some moms are worried that the knowledge may diminish their roles or invite children to look for their "second mom". I personally can't imagine how difficult it would be to sit a child down and explain this, but I have to agree with psychologists who say children have a right to know their medical histories. And haven't we all seen a few too many Lifetime movies in which hiding this kind of information ends badly?

The challenge for teachers of technology
gingembre
by gingembre  12-28-2007
The author draws a good analogy between lessons learned from driving-- the limitations of memorizing routes vs. getting lost and discovering the lay of the land--and lessons learned from teaching. He discusses "the value of education founded in general principles, rather than a rote memorization of steps to accomplish specific goals."

Technology is more than a tool
PatParslow
by PatParslow  11-9-2007
I am not sure technology forces change, unless the humans are use it are considered part of the change. However, I am happy to describe technology this way - in terms of the systems rather than just the 'kit'. And then, the complexity formed by combination of 'man and machine' becomes a major driver of change. The technological kit affords the humans in the system the opportunity to force change.

Internet censorship??
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  8-3-2007    3
A powerful Senate committee wants government regulators to find cutting edge technologies that can censor audio and video that flows over the internet, through cable, or into an iPhone to help make sure the nation's small children never see a naked breast or hear Howard Stern without parental permission. The idea is to turbo charge the V-Chip, a government mandate that requires television makers to include a chip that parents can used to filter shows. Here we go........

Giant microwave turns plastic back to oil
shaine

This is awesome technology. It goes on to talk about using it for autofluff, all the fibrous stuff left after a car is stripped. It is supposed to extract enough oil to run the machine from the autofluff removed. Thus, metals can be stripped clean of organics with little additional energy.

White Papers - Top 5 Tips
mcfrazer
by mcfrazer  6-6-2007
White papers should effectively present an argument for a product, service, or technology and educate the reader as to why the argument is valid. Developing an objective, informative white paper is key to the paper’s validity, and whether the reader will read, and especially believe what is presented. Written well, white papers can indeed influence readers, as key industry research confirms, and serve as a compelling, authoritative sales tool that advances prospects in the sales cycle.
