Seadevils and Species Unknown

"It was stranger than any imagination could have conceived," he wrote in "Half Mile Down" (Harcourt Brace, 1934). "I would focus on some one creature and just as its outlines began to be distinct on my retina, some brilliant, animated comet or constellation would rush across the small arc of my submarine heaven and every sense would be distracted, and my eyes would involuntarily shift to this new wonder." Beebe sketched some of the creatures, because no camera of the day was able to withstand the rigors of the deep and record the nuances of this cornucopia of astonishments. Colleagues reacted coolly. Some accused Beebe of exaggeration. One reviewer suggested that his heavy breathing had fogged the window of the submarine vessel, distorting the undersea views. More at source.

Little-known french landscapes and regions
Lifestar
by Lifestar  11-7-2008    2
Beneath each picture is the name of the region (i.e. Vaucluse, Aude, Savoie, etc...) and above the picture is the name of the town/village where it's located. "Château" stands for "Castle", "Ile" stands for "Island", "Cap" is "Cape", "Jardin" is "Garden" and "Baie" is "Bay". Hope you enjoy :)

Social media: Social Approximity?
wildcat
by wildcat  9-29-2008
Now that bit about the telegraph may be a bit out of dot dot dash date, so simply substitute in "social media" for telegraph and you're back in the present tense. Social media are a recontextualization of old print forms and contents within a new distribution and communication framework (social web). It's not surprising that so many of our social practices (tools and uses) echo, if not amplify, their old media (broadcast) forebears: celebrity, self-promotion, news, anchoring, commentary, top tens, ratings, rankings, and polls (diggs, votes).

This is no fantasy or trick of the light - Upside down rainbow
einbar
by einbar  9-16-2008
Upside down rainbow - The circumzenithal arc or cicumzenith arc (CZA), also called the Bravais' arc, is an optical phenomenon similar in appearance to a rainbow and arising from refraction of sunlight through non-terminated, horizontally-oriented ice crystals in certain clouds. It takes the shape of one-quarter of a circle centered at the zenith and parallel to the horizon, on the same side as the sun. Its colors run from blue near the zenith to red towards the horizon; it is one of the brightest and most colorful halos" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumzenithal_arc

More Religious Right Insanity
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  9-8-2008
It doesn't take much effort to uncover the truly bizarre on the Religious Right. Now they're resorting to Mind Control Fatwas to murder McCain so their Joan of Arc Palin can take up the Christian sword of prophesy to finally end the ungodly behavior of the People Who Believe Differently Than I group. Remember, these are the same folks the Republicans are courting and proudly proclaim as their "base". Whatever!

What is a Windfall Profit?
bmeuppls
by bmeuppls  8-4-2008
Maybe they have in mind profit margins as a percentage of sales. Yet by that standard Exxon's profits don't seem so large. Exxon's profit margin stood at 10% for 2007, which is hardly out of line with the oil and gas industry average of 8.3%, or the 8.9% for U.S. manufacturing (excluding the sputtering auto makers). If that's what constitutes windfall profits, most of corporate America would qualify.Chemicals had an average margin of 12.7%. Computers: 13.7%. Electronics and appliances: 14.5%. Pharmaceuticals (18.4%) and beverages and tobacco (19.1%) round out the Census Bureau's industry rankings. But if 10% is the new standard, the tech industry is going to have to rethink its growth arc. LG, the electronics company, saw its profits grow by 505% in 2007. General Electric profits by investing in the alternative energy technology that Obama says Congress should subsidize GE's profit margin in 2007 was 10.3%, about the same asExxon's.
